  1. Typical Jackson Sun article whenever UC is involved...I thought the spread formation on the last drive was the difference..easier to pass, we did not complete a pass, however they had to play more honest & respect the deep threat, this opened up the middle just enough for us to keep running the same option plays and we scored!
  2. Thanks!..graduated with Barry Duncan and Al Creswell, Class of 1972...we never beat Humboldt, although we went 9-2 our senior year....hope the storms and rains hold off so I can see this one in person!
  3. Thank you!...Last year, I got to work the State Tournament...saw 4 State Champions close up, the best game was Collierville and Hardin Co. in the sub-state game...
  4. We are down to the Great 8...every team is good, every team has played and won a playoff game...I expect a dogfight in this game..Humboldt was rated # 1 until UC beat them in week 8, however, UC won the first half and I believe Humboldt won the second half...but the total was in favor of UC Both teams have great athletes, UC has the home advantage and the Purple field, Lets pray no player from either team gets hurt and the winner will represent West TN the next 2 weeks as a winner as well...Since, I am a UC grad, LETS GO TORNADOES!!
  5. I attended a Professional Umpire school when I was 19. The first game I ever umpired was a college game back in 1973. Played 2 years of college ball after that. Unable to umpire due to work until summer of '82. Joined TSSAA in Nashville '84 & '85 again in '89. During this time I was also coaching youth teams and playing baseball in men's leagues in Nashville. I restarted my TSSAA career in 1999 in Murfreesboro and have continued thru the present. I have attending many association meetings that are required. i have attending 3 Mid-South Umpire Association Clinics and 1 TSSAA required clinic. Having coached, played, and umpired over 1000 games each, I feel very fortunate to have survived and expirenced almost every play and situation an umpire might come across in any game. After all this time, I believe that we, umpires, are human, and we make mistakes. We do not do it on purpose. All we can do is get in the right position, and we are in position 99% of the time! I have had the pleasure of working in 3 different associations. Every associations has good and bad umpires....Good umpires get the good games. Partners communicate! Before and during and after the games. This is how we improve. I try to stay in good shape and wish that I could umpire all year. It is very important for us be physically and mentally ready for each season. And no, we are not paid enough...but I am not here for the money. The heat, the abuse from fans, the beatings we take behind the plate because of a lazy catcher or a bad hop are the obstacles we face every game. Game management is very important. We make the game official. It is our job to begin the game and make sure it ends. In saying that, strikes and outs must be called. Sometimes we have to work hard to find strikes and outs. In finishing, everything is relevant. Good coaches, bad coaches...good teams , bad teams, good umpires, bad umpires. We all have opinions. On the field, when I am umpiring, my opinion is the only one that matters. Just know, that I know the rules,I will be in position, I will hustle, and I will make the correct call! Whether you agree or not, well, it's just a game...
  6. 28-7...UC has over 400 yards rushing and controls the line of scrimmage!
  7. Add Collierville and Hardin County to my West TN list...great game also by the way!
  8. Been awarded assignment at the Baseball State this year...it has been 14 years since my last appearance...1999 in Chattanooga.... Over the years, I have worked for Dorris Armstrong in Nashville, Ken Norfleet in Murfreesboro, and Jimmy Meeks in Northwest Tn umpire Associations...I have met many coaches and umpires and regard these as special relationships and friendships...I hope to see many of you in Murfreesboro!! 9. Milan is finished for the season....did not make region tourney...hope UC will play loose today and error free!
  10. Sorry...your competition should help, but by no means have you played many AA or AAA teams like Friendship and Riverside schedule....Coach T schedule is not perfect but close to accurate...nobody from region 7 class A has played in the state tourney for a few years...i wish UC good luck and love to see them there!!...but there work lies ahead of them!
  11. Until Riverside is eliminated, they are still the favorite!!...Friendship Christian is very good as well and both these teams have the expirence of playing in the 'boro!
  12. Another example of one strong pitcher was LaVergne 2002 AAA road to the State....Matt Scott pitches 7 innings against Dickson County on Monday, pitches 3 innings on Wednesday vs. Mt. Juliet and defeats Brentwood in 9 innings that was played on Saturday due to rainout on Friday... Yes, he also pitched the following Wednesday 7 innings against Farragut and 2 innings against Munford..he did not pitch the championship, but was scheduled to pitch again if LaVergne lost....
  13. How you doing David?..About time to post some info on your Riverdale Classic!!...dates would be nice so i can plan to umpire...always a pleasure to work there!...Duane Traverse
  14. Enjoyed calling games this weekend..thanks Kenny for letting come in from West TN to umpire at this great high school tournament
  15. I am calling at Siegel and Lebanon this weekend...will try to come by the resevation when I arrive this afternoon...I look forward to this tourney every year...
  16. It looks like you have a good tourney put together this week..may you have great weather for all to play
  17. The baseball is always good in Rutherford County...how's the weather looking for opening day David? Sure miss the quality of baseball that this district plays...
  18. Wow!! I've been umpiring since umpire school in 1973...all umpires want are pitchers that throw strikes, fielders that make plays and batters that swing the bat...Is that asking too much? For the love of the game we take the games that are assigned to us...not all games are fun, but they are better than sitting in the office....what I'm trying to say is with a good attitude, good training, knowledge of the rules, and a little hustle anyone can umpire...I've had good games and bad games throughout my umpiring career, but I wouldn't change a thing...I have a doubleheader tomorrow, I don't even know who is playing, but I'm looking forward to the games and pray it doesn't rain, all I want are pitchers that throw strikes, etc. I thank God everyday that I can do something that I love and get paid for it.
  19. this is Duane, I would like to express how much i miss calling baseball games in this district. It's nice to be able to read here on Coacht how competetive it still is...all the coaches do a great job of preparing their players for each game...Hi to everyone associated with this district...especially David Limbaugh... it was great seeing you at the Riverdale Classic this year David..music is still the best in the state!!
  20. Great thread!!! I've umpired the last decade in Middle TN and have called games with the best teams from this state...all the champions were special...I took region week off in '02 to see LaVergne and Matt Scott's great performance... I am very proud to have had the opportunity and honor to officiate these great teams. My most memorable game was the first game played at Blackman HS...David Price was a freshman and had just thrown a no-hitter against Mt. Juliet...Matt Scott was a junior and threw for LaVergne...LaVergne won 3-1 as Draper Oakley hit two HR's against Price. Thanks to the Riverdale Warrior Classic I've been able to see Bartlett, Farragut, USJ, Goodpasture, Dyer Co., and many other class teams... Looking forward to seeing who I will get to see at the classic this year. Thanks Middle Tennessee!!
  21. Preston Overby pitched as an 8th grader for USJ a few years back....I hear there is another 8th grader who may play and possibly pitch this year...Any word on this kids abilities?
  22. John Traverse led LaVergne to the first three State Tourneys...had a 299 game vs.Centennial in '04 and a 729 series..if not for the great Hendersonville teams, Lavergne might have won a state championship in 2004...John is the upperclassman Kyle Barnes was unable to beat in match play...just ask him. By the way, I do think Kyle Barnes has had the best state tourneys...just look it up on the TSSAA records section
  23. let's hear from all fans and keep it clean..two good teams .. I am looking forward to a great game Friday nite!
