A Simple Message for Iraq
beethoven replied to CoachT's topic in Politics, National Issues, & Controversy
No I don't, 6'4 coaches get the standard World Geography with all of the transfers from alternative school and discipline transfers from other schools. You know how it works... Texas....Bitter taste now that the President is in free fall and your the one having to make the defensive & insulting statements...too bad that taste won't linger when the backlash to conservatism finally ends...just as conservatism has ended its domination of american politics. -

Average retention for a student one year after a class is 10% of the material. Heck, I research everything I cover in class the day before I go over it to refresh my memory.... -

Hmm! We support many dictators world wide and have done so throughout US History. South Korea is a democracy in name only....Have you noticed that Saudi Arabia us ruled by a monarch? Heck, we supported Saddam when we dislike the iranians more...after they had overthrown the IRanian dictator we supported! HA! Fighting to spread freedom and democracy! You can't foster democracy at the point of a gun. It works in America b/c we killed our fellows on two occasions to make it happen. It works in France b/c the bloodied there noses multiple times to get it right. Britain had a bloody path etc...The People have to be willing to fight for it themselves and lets be honest on this point...the Iraqis are much more interested in tribal/religious rule...thus "sectarian violence" (Bush code word for civil war). Great Doonesbury cartoon that illustrates the problem in Iraq: http://images.ucomics.com/comics/db/2007/db070218.gif -

Another part of the equation is the ethnic backgrounds. The Sunnis are Arabs...The Iranians are Persians. The Shi'ite Iraqis are Arab for the most part, but the common sect is a unifier somewhat. The Middle East in general shuns the Iranians. It is so complex there and our government and people really haven't shown that we have a clue on how to effect real change there. Afghanistan for example, violence is ramping up and the taliban are making new footholds, despite "we are close" rhetoric on the mission to creat a democractic and free Afghanistan. -
...and we already know that when/if it happens (lets pray that cooler heads prevail) you'll stick to the same old rhetoric that Bush has been feeding the American people for some time now... ELA, Cowboys et al. There isn't a congratulatory pat on the back going to come from dundy82 if your right. Hate to be the one to break this to ya'll. Oh and by the way...Januray of 2007 was the warmest January in recorded history....

Hmmm??? 2007 -1992 ------- 15 15 years....the infancy of the research on the topic. Read a typical piece from the Right in The Week last night. The author cited the "little ice age" and called it world wide....Very innacurate. "the little ice age" afflicted Europe and European Russia. It was most likely caused by a change in the Ocean currents by a sudden melt off of the Ice on Hudson Bay. The infusion of freshwater disrupted the flow of warm sinking as it cooled and warming the arctic area....The resulting cool period caused snow in July in parts of Europe. Lots if misinformation out there. I happen to stand in the corner of the global warming model that might trigger an eventual global cooling in the long term, of the catastrophic type (think Day after Tomorrow). But, even if that scenario doesn't come about, the rising sea level, loss of freshwater etc...is bad enough. The world community is like your average smoker. He or she knows they are killing themselves slowly, talks about quitting, but ultimately continues the behavior...apolegetically.

Guess what, the Great Lakes haven't frozen over, like they used to do....Lake Effect Snow...8 feet of it. Great Article.

Ahh! It must be read between the lines day. China has stepped in and made some deals with North Korea under the table. The US is getting what it wants and North Korea is as well. It seems that negotiations and diplomacy have been successful here, despite some false starts. Lets also be honest about one thing. There was NO THREAT of a US invasion. We are stretched to thin and could only credible threaten with nukes, but we have long proclaimed a non-1st strike policy. The scary thing (as long as we are reading between the lines) is that China is actually starting to step up to the plate as a world power, rather than a regional power. I don't know how Americans will sound chanting "we're #2! We're #2!" b/c the dragon is rising....and we are sending more and more there way.

The article is clear on what it states. You must not be intelligent enough to interpret it.

Why do we support these types of government
beethoven replied to ELA's topic in Politics, National Issues, & Controversy
The Iraqi's voted for a Koranic based government. Not exactly a great stepping stone towards democracy. Lets ween ourselves off of oil...if we like Israel so much, then provide them with a bevy of high tech weapons and support, but contain the radicals to the area...or at least tighten our border and keep them out....with no oil money, no support, and a population w/o jobs...you'll see the radicals go by the way side (they are small % anyway) in favor of people willing to do right. -

Thanks for the clarification Lt William Calley... -
Hmm...common misconception of Darwin's work.

Eisenhower warned us of the consequences of a military-industrial complex...between them and our oil interests, I'd be very cautious in assuming that an over the top hawkish mindset isn't dominating some of the top brass in our country. Can't speak for ELA, but I don't hate the military. I greatly admire what they do individually and collectively. I still suggest the military to students who may not have as many options as others, but it is always with the warning that signing up is putting your life on the line, whether you personally believe in the cause or not. Serving with distinction is one of the great honors of this country, it should be noted that our all volunteer force clearly shows the class distinctin in this country. I believe that should be of greater concern to us...the have nots fighting the wars the haves are willing to support with votes and rhetoric.

U.S. War Deaths in Iraq

None of the above, just sick of this stupid war. Sick of those that blindly follow whatever line of reason rove, cheney and bush give them. Sick of this administration. I'm sure Grunt can extoll his own virtues (as he did in the next post) and I'm equally sure I'm not the only one to lose someone, I'm also sure that most Vietnam Vets I've had the pleasure to be around don't take whatever this admin feeds them as the god's spoken truth. Thank you for your service Grunt, but I don't agree with your opinion and probably will never share any common ground with the rest of the hedges....and as note, I'm a part of those in between generations that didn't really have a conflict to chase. My dream was to serve in the air force as a pilot of some type, the reality was a body built for drive blocking and pass protecting against speed rushers. I apologize to any I may have offended but I am to close to this topic just now. -
U.S. War Deaths in Iraq

600,000 is a legitimate # that is disputed. The same study cited the 600,000 as the upper end figure and noted that the number could be anywhere from 350,000 or so and above. This figure also included all deaths, not just Iraq war deaths. Why don't you "grunt" your way over to Iraq and make the same sacrifice my family and the 3000+ other American families have made since this bloody mess began. ....or better yet, carve "gutless" into every politician and soldier's back that was a part of our cut and run from 'Nam....oh wait, we've already treated those soldiers like crap. This war was a mistake and we're so deep into this quagmire that the only solutions are cut & run or "troop surge" to a number that would allow us to slaughter everyone that "looked" like a terrorist in Iraq. Thank you President Bush for this mess, I'm sure it was a small part of Rove's plan to recapture the white house in 2012. -
unless your a fundamentalist christian who believes the Earth is approaching its 7000th birthday. Its not the "final word". the wonderful thing about the worldwide scientfic community is the peer review process and continuing research along avenues of inquriry...what is disturbing is the Bush admin's formerly dogged assumption that global warming is a hoax and its editing and censoring of its own scientists reports.

The coming oil crunch (lets please not get off onto that topic) is forcing a lot of adaptation that has the potential to positive side-effects on the overall issue. Little nudges to speed things up should be the gov's role (IMO). For example, lets put a mandatory % increase on the fuel efficiency of vehicles. Perhaps 2% every 2 years....for new vehicles. Changes in building codes to require more efficient homes and increasing manufacturing standards on the appliances/equipment going into homes. Changes in water usage at all levels. Tighter controls on industry and penalties (tariffs) on products manufactured by non-compliant countries etc.... We also need to start pushing populations away from coasts. rising sea levels and increasing pollution.... Tennessean ran a great article last week about the threat to freshwater supplies due to rising sea levels. There are limits to how much change can be observed before the effect begins to compounds.
-
This attitude is why we are stuck with an oil economy and oil politics. I'm not giddy, the effects are negative to all of mankind regardless of how you believe global warming is caused. If humanity can make changes to reduce the negative effects on populations...then why debate it?
-
Lets just hope that world leaders don't fall into the "throw there hands in the air" category and shut down any attempt at change as hopeless and not worth the effort. The effect of climate change can be somewhat mitigated. Make sure you take the time to look at the effects article. good stuff.

CNN article about Global Warming report being released in Paris BBC article about consequences with maps!! Please get the government censors going! All of these scientist must be told what they can publish and tell the world's population!

Losing land to expanding development, coastline loss would effect the amount of available cropland. This in turn cranks up the use of fertilizer etc...In addition a longer growing season/use of this extra time for more harvests, saps the land of nutrients which of course causes us to have to use more fertilizers and such to help with crop growth. If were still going to argue the % of how much is who/what is causing then you get into the same quagmire we are in....a lot talk with no action....Those scientist that Bush and his boys have been censoring and depressing info of are starting to work out the tipping point of temperature...and it is closer than people think.
-
I'll tell all of you what is lacking: The will to compromise in reality...and move beyond ideological differences. Lets assume that global warming is just a usual trend for our climate. The biggest difference between X # of million years ago was hotter and today is (drum roll please) 6.2 billion humans, with about 2 billion living in unhealty, unsanitary conditions. There are some who believe a warmer climate begets a longer growing season, more moisture for crops etc...but this ignores the side effects of land loss due to melting glaciers and rising coast lines and the expansion of deserts in all parts of the world. Lets also assume that the Humans caused it crowd is correct: Human beings, especially since the industrial age (don't forget that China is mid industrial faze right now) are contributing to rise in temperatures. Lets not forget that an expanding world population continues to drain fresh water supplies, challenge farms to produce more, and eat up valuable real estate to house all of these people. Let everyone assume they are right and Limit human activity that could boost the effect whether you believe we are causing it or not. We don't have to embrace the Kyote accords, but we do need to more aggressively challenge automobile manufacturers, architects and construction firms and municipalities to do what is nec. to limit human impact. I'll vote for that politician.
