  1. Final was something like 84- 53 Waverly. The starters were pulled very early in the 4th quarter with Waverly leading by 24 or so. I don't have the stats but Rico Ralston had close to 30 points and led the team while committing very few turnovers. Rico appears to be even quicker and stronger than last year. And as always he plays so unselfish. Waverly will have a much tougher matchup this Friday at Hickman County.
  2. No. The first game is in Jackson on 1/3/05 and the second game will be in Waverly on Monday, January 10, 2005. Come watch. The popcorn will be fresh.
  3. Sure, this will be a difficult matchup for Waverly. But what a great series to use as a measuring stick of your strengths and weaknesses against one of Tennessee's best teams. Playing Northside twice in 8 days in early January should keep the team focused thru Christmas break and expose those areas which will need to be improved prior to tournament time. Twenty years from now, a close game, a win, or getting blown out by potentially the AAA State Champions will be remembered much more than scheduling some patsy to inflate your record. Hats off to Waverly for asking for this game and Northside for accepting.
  4. I don't think anyone who objectively follows 10 AA basketball thinks Sycamore is going to fold. Their 3 point shooting, tough defense and team play will continue to put them at or near the top of this district. Sycamore has also been blessed with some tall players since the school opened. That will help them this year as well since the district does not have an overabundance of big men.
  5. Where will the 9AA District and Region 5 tournaments be held this year??
  6. Well said Gomab. Have watched Noel Smith and Cory Pfleiger play several times. Both are very accurate and have considerable range. What seperates the two IMO (and many others like them) is the type of shot that they take. Noel shoots more of a glorified set shot. He gets the ball off quickly but his release point is much lower. If he is closely guarded he can be limited in his shooting opportunities. Noel works extremely hard to get open to compensate for this but if he plays college ball he will find good athletes tightly guarding him every night. I think his production was off somewhat during tournaments last year when teams are well scouted and his shooting ability is known. Plfleiger, in contrast, shoots a true jump shot and can get his shot off when guarded closely. He reminds me of Harpeth's Josh Goodwin, now at Belmont. Pleiger's range is uncanny for a high school player. Both are amazing in their accuracy. There are way too many good shooters out there to say who is "the" best in the state. I will go out on a limb though and say if we measure someones heart and desire, Noel Smith is the best in the state. Maybe a subject for another thread.
  7. Yep, very tough match-ups at the sub-state level. Giles County being in the same region (Reg.5) will not make things easier for District 10 teams.
  8. Waverly did not have any organized team practices or camps this summer. A late announcement by the previous coach deciding not to return as coach and a long drawn out process in naming his replacement prevented the team from attending any camps. How this will effect the team is not known. In Waverly's favor is the fact that only one player graduated from last years squad. If the players worked on their individual games during the summer, the long season ahead should allow them time to be ready for tournaments.
  9. Other than Tyler Smith, who will GCHS have back from last years team? Who will replace the graduating seniors? I am sure with the many blowouts GCHS had last year, there was plenty of playing time for the non starters. Please give a rundown of the players, if you can, and what kind of size they will have. Thanks and good luck this season.
  10. Good post Statebound. Where did Harpeth's Goodwin transfer to and will he be eligible to play this year? I agree that Sycamore will be strong this year and will surprise many. Who is the player that is quite tall(6'-7"ish) and I believe just a sophomore this year? Is he the one who has vastly improved?
  11. TSSAA may have different rules than NAIA. I once played in a college game in which 8 of our 10 available players fouled out. The game continued. We were told that we would have to forfeit if we only had 1 player left. I'll never forget our coach during a timeout when we were down to 4 players. He looked at us and said, "I guess we need to play a 2-2 zone". That was reduced to a 2-1 zone soon thereafter. The other team showed good sportsmanship in only using the same amount of players as we had available; with the other players just standing near center court while they were on offense. Oh. in case you were wondering, we did lose the game.
  12. Does anyone have the stats for this game??? Am interested in Sycamore's 3 point shooting percentage. I think Pierce missed two 3's but dont recall any of the guards missing. Was an awesome display of outside shooting, knocking down 15. They will need this again tonight to stay close. Sycamore also hit 20 of 23 free throws, with many of them at the end with Waverly having to foul.
  13. Sure, I know a little bit about Cheatham County. I dont think I'll be giving away any secrets. They are a very gritty, well coached team. They play tough man to man defense and can be patient on offense. Don't let the little guy, Noel Smith fool you. He can light it up from anywhere and leads the mid-state in 3's. Alex Bowers is a point forward and is a very versatile player. The other players are excellent role players, doing whatever is needed to help their team win. As much as I would like to see Cheatham do well, I really feel they have no chance against Giles County. Their biggest weakness is their lack of size and I think this will become evident should they meet in the semis. The matchup tomorrow with Lewis County should be a good one. The winner will be rewarded with 1 more game, nothing further.
  14. Giles county will play the winner of Cheatham County and Lewis County on Wednesday night.
  15. Does anyone know or have a link to the brackets for the District 10 tournament; including dates and times for the latter part of the week as well???? Thanks.
  16. Whoaaa.... don't judge this player by the size of school he plays for. He does quite well when playing with and against the best in Tenneessee in AAU bball. Have watched him a few times and he has a good game now with tremendous upside.
  17. The Royals beat Nike (either Select or Elite, forgot name) in the finals. Two very good teams!! May need to do DNA testing to verify their ages. LOL The Clarksville Soldiers came in 3rd. There was some excellent basketball played in this tournament. They should represent the mid-state well.

  19. Check the Tennessean. On the second to last page of the sports section, they often list upcoming basketball camps, tournaments, and leagues. These listings are not included everyday but they were in this mornings(4/16/02)edition. To the best of my knowledge, only the substate, state and national tournaments are officially AAU events. The rest of the tournaments are either sanctioned by another group or are open tournaments, usually costing less to enter than the AAU events. A lot of the same teams participate in these tournaments. Good Luck.
  20. Chaka, I think your statement is sarcasm at its best! Note to next years players: Sign ups will be around mid-January. Or whenever you feel like it.
  21. Smokin75, Here is how I see the match-ups in the regional tournament: Sycamore vs Loretto....Sycamore advances easily, unless long bus ride and letdown from District finals gets them. Nah...dont think that will happen. Cheatham County vs Giles County....this game will be ugly; big time match-up problems for the Cubs Lewis County vs Montgomery Central....Lewis County has too much starting 5 balance versus the 2 player Indians. However, Burney for MCHS is an explosive player and IF he isnt contained, it could be close. Still think LC advances. Waverly vs Page....Should be the best of the first round games. Waverly's guard play and outside shooting versus Page's overall size. The team making the least mistakes will win in a close game. Five sophomores will start or play significant minutes in this game, giving a glimpse of the future of these two regional foes. My heart goes with the Tigers in a tough fought game. Semifinals.... Lewis County and Sycamore will provide a great game to watch. Sycamore must be careful not to overlook Lewis County after beating them by 16 in early January at home. Sycamore's strength is their 2 big guys, but feel they will need offensive production from their guards in order to win. Will give the edge to whoevers fans provide the most support. A toss up. Giles County has too much strength, heighth, balance and Tyler Smith to be challenged on their home court. Unless Waverly shoots absolutely "lights out" all night long. Its been known to happen. Finals.... Giles County just has too many weapons. Lewis County knows this already. Sycamore will find it out. Good luck all. Play your best.
  22. Any info. on the size of this gym?
  23. Perry County won 64-48. Think halftime score was 30-14. Perry County makes 25 of 35 free throws. PC plays host to Waverly tonight; should be a good ballgame. [Edited by mkhhawk on 2-18-03 2:08P]
