  1. Man whatever happened to CHS? They pretty much ruled the district and somewhat the region in my days. It's like every since coach Hopper left they've gone down hill snow ball style. I didn't even think Hopper was all that great of a coach either. We had two current NBA stars on the same team which were surrounded by other good players and still couldnt win state. One of those years we lost 2 starters for the last half of the season and still went to sub state.
  2. I don't see how Cookeville doesn't make it to State every year playing in that Sectional and Region. There is "maybe" one good team out of that section and another decent team or two each year but never any powerhouses. That section usually is the weakest team in the state tourney every year. The other three sections usually have at least 3 teams in each one that could compete for the state championship. Cookeville looked good and if they start being more aggressive in the midfield they'll start cuising through their region.

    Clarksville teams

Clarksville High is definately the best team and and with their record that is an embarrisment for Clarksville as awhole. How could a town with so many good athletes be so horrible all these years? Recently Clarksville had two good teams and Kenwood should have won state. Northeast was good in 95,96 but other than that Clarksville schools has been no where to be found that past 30+ years. New schools and rezoning has had a little impact on schools but not that great.
  4. The question on my mind is...Was the turnovers forced or were they simply Maryville errors? If they were forced then they weren't gifts. How much work did Central have to put into each score after a turnover and how long were those drives? I'm just wondering because we don't get to see Maryville highlights on the news here but I check the news and this site for to to scores. I remember watching that UT linemen cause that fumble against Arkansas in 1998 and watched my VOLS drive over 40 yards to win the game and to this day still hear people say stupid things like Arkansas gave them the game. If a team forces or causes a fumble and drives a good distance, or even a short distance, to score its the other teams responsibility to stop them either way. If the ball just slips out of a QB's hand or he mishandles the snap then you can say they gave it to you. They still have the opportunity to stop you on defense though. I hope Maryville's turnovers were not forced by central. It looks better that way.
  5. I haven't made it to a Maryville game yet this year but my parents who live there will be going to their second tonight against Knox. Central. They were impressed with Maryville after their come from behind win over Powel. I've only been able to compare the schedules of Maryville and Central and it looks like Maryville has maybe a 10-14 point edge on paper over Central. I don't know how bad the injuries will effect Maryville though and comparing schedules only works half the time anyway. Especially if a rivalry is involved. What does everyone else predict?
  6. Starting at this year's Spring Fling in Memphis, there will be eight teams from each classification instead of four, which means two teams will advance from each region to the sectional. I agree with you. It's a good thing for soccer and baseball as well. What a scary thought. It would have been interesting to see that last year. So I guess sectionals will be region winners vs. another region's loser then. Franklin and Farragut really could have benefited from this last year. Teams like Hendersonville that come on strong in the post season really will beneift. I'm sure Clarksville would have taken advantage of it in 2001 when they were handed their first loss of the season in the region championship. Now teams will be able to advance even if they are upset in the region final. Its about time they did this.
  7. Hey its only about 3 more months untill the 2003 Boys season. Should be interesting. I'm wondering if the top 2 teams from each region will advance starting this season like has been discussed. Could start seeing teams like Brentwood and Franklin or Bearden and Farragut going into the state tourney instead of eliminating each other like in the past. Hendersonville and Clarksville and Gallitan are probably looking foward to it. That is if its true. It makes since. Basketball has been doing it for years.
  8. It depends on how many players they lost from last season and how bad they want to keep winning. I think their only fualt last season was that they werent as aggressive in the midfield as they should have been. Thats why they got creamed against Clarksville in the semis. They need to stop trying so hard to be pretty and worry about winning lose balls before they can be a possession team. Its there though.
  9. Sounds familiar doesnt it? Maybe like NCAA football? They want the most attractive records or the teams more than likely to make it into the playoffs regardless if there is better teams that dont make it for reasons such as being in the same region as another top team.
  10. Marty Euverard was my head coach for my senior year at Clarksville High in 1995. He came to our school to introduce himself shorty after our previous coach had resigned the year before. I knew he'd be different after he stormed into the auditorium and yelled for everyone to shut up. You could tell he'd at least be more vocal anyway. Some of the more spoiled and lazy players from the teams before even decided not to play for him. Too bad. Anyway...he coached us well and hard through the summer work outs and we actually thought we were becomming a better team. We had a terrible coach up until that point and were pretty excited about the season comming up. Well to make a long story short...our team didn't have much talent on it that year. Allot of the more talented players just had no interest in losing anymore and allot of others just didn't want to play for Euverard because they knew they'd have to work much harder for him than the previous coach. Traditionally at our school the most talented kids would play soccer or wrestle. Basketball was doing good then also. The players we ended up with werent all that bad and some were good athletes but they thought that we'd kick some but by just showing up to play and practice because of our new, seemingly better, coach and it didn't work out. They upset me off to the point where I didn't even want to be around them because I was used to being around hard working soccer players and wrestlers. I almost quit the team. We went 0-10. I knew Euverard was a good coach but he seemed to lose interest in us after the 6th or 7th loss and we could tell he was looking forward to the season ending. Then he just abbanded us after one year to go coach at Oakland under Rick Butler. Butler is probably the best coach in this state over the past 20 years and he had worked under him before he came to us. Can't say that I blame him but at the same time I can. I was graduating anyway but I think he would have done really well with the teams they've had since. Our assistant coach took over and has been there since and has had a couple of good teams but I can't help but wonder what Euverard would have done with them the past 6 years if he had stayed.
  11. Who are the current coaches at Oakland?
  12. Maryville gets my vote. Besides...they were ranked in the top 100 in the nation and no other team in Tennessee was. I think Maryville would beat ANYONE in the state and that include Brentwood Academy.
  13. Anyone know if there is a way to find out how Tennessee schools have done against the Kentucky schools? Allot of the schools near the Ky/Tn/ border play. Some even have out of state rivals.
  14. There have been several players from Houston in the early 90s that could qualify. You could almost throw their names in a hat and draw to settle it. Ross Paule gets my vote. Him or a guy that played for Hendersonville in the mid 90s with the last name Glazer. Matt Herbsr....whatever is definately NOT the best player ever or from last season for that matter.
  15. Here is the worst news paper coverage of high school football....The Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle. Its such a joke. This town is trying so hard to be considered one of the "big cities" in the state yet has really pathetic coverage of its football AND the rest of the sports.
  16. No we don't have feeder programs for ANY sport here. The middle schools have football teams but basically those are a step above from Pop Warner League with the names of the schools slapped on the back of the jerseys. Baseball and soccer has the "travel" or "select" teams but are so political its pathtetic. Its obvious when only one school out of the six has a good team. Its embarrasing, and a shame, that such a nice city like Clarksville has crappy fields and athletic programs cause this town has so many good athletes but have to wait till they get to high school to really develope.
  17. I guess what I really wanted to know is how Maryville keeps "reloading" year after year. Like what kind of a "feeder program" is their in Maryville? Do all the Maryville teams grow up playing together on the same team all the way up to high school? I know the feeder program here in Clarksville is the worst. Actually, we didn't even have one in my days. I'm not sure they do now. I played for Clarksville High and we had all played against each other in little league ball or at least heard of each other. This is a military town too so you might play with a guy one year then next year, or sooner, he'll be gone because his dad got shipped off to another base or country. We've had very few football teams in this town (at any school) over the past 30 years and the few we've had were due to getting great coaches for a brief time like Rick Butler in the 95, 96 season at Northeast High. I heard he coaches at Maryville College now. What is Maryville's secret?
  18. I've heard so much about Maryville football over the past few years. I first heard of them when I was in high school during my sophmore or junior year. We had gotten creamed by Brentwood Academy that year 56-12 and during the playoffs that year one night I heard where Maryville had beaten Brentwood Academy and I couldn't believe there could actually have been a better team than BA that year. Now the past 3 or 4 years I've heard about how good they have been. My parents moved there about a year ago and I plan on trying to catch a game if I'm ever there visiting them during football season. I heard somewhere that the town sort of shuts down for the games and that it is kind of like the town in the movie "Varsity Blues". Is this true? Does the whole town bleed the Maryville school colors?
  19. Wasnt there a Ryan Stack for Father Ryan also?
  20. yes he did play for father ryan...2 time all american, dont know what happened his junior year, he got it his sophmore and senior years... Ok I thought he sounded familiar. We played Father Ryan in scrimmages and I think I played against him. Father Ryan always seemed loaded though so I guess he just kind of blended in with the rest of the team. How they didn't win state EVERY year in the 90s is amazing. They were just as good as the Houston teams that ruled the state back then but always seemed to get upset before state. Then the private school split happened.
  21. Sounds familiar. Did he play for Father Ryan?
  22. I can only vote based on who I've actually seen or played against. Here they are... Ross Puale Houston early, mid 90s Carely Talley Houston early, mid 90s Chris Cline Brentwood early 90s Last Named Glazer Hendersonville mid 90s

    Best GK in Tn

I'm sticking with Bearden's keeper and Clarksville High's keeper. They were both all state. Clarksville's was putting on a goal keepers' clinic in the state finals until he let once bounce over his head.

    Best GK in Tn

Either Bearden or Clarksville High's GK is the best in the state.
  25. I played for an above average team in high school. When we were going to play a team that we knew we'd probably or definitely beat handidly our coach would always tell us just to play hard and not to worry about scoring "too many goals" and embarrassing the other team. He thought it would be more humiliating for them if we intentionally kept ourselves from scoring. He would remind us of the first team our school ever had and how they played a certain private school that was, and still is a state power, that year (they shall remain nameless for this thread) and that team beat was beating us handidly early in the game and instead of scoring more goals they started show boating and playing around with the ball. They later were beaten by a few other teams by larger margins. The second year in the team's existence they met most of the teams again from the first season and had improved greatly. The one team they had a problem with was the "nameless" team. To make a long story short, lets just say "Payback is a Bi@@!" Next time any of you current players are beating the crap out of some team I'd suggest you play the whole 80 minutes like you were down 0-2. Teams that get show boated on and make it obvious tend to remember you next time. Its one thing to get beat 12-0 but I think most people would rather lose 12-0 rather than the same team beating them 6-0 and humuliating them in the process.
