  1. Obion County's new coach is installing more of a balanced offense. They will still pass, but will use more of the running game. This should open up the passing game even more. Thats scary!
  2. Since girls assistant coach Alicia Justice is moving after the school year, Chandler or West should get the job with the other being the assistant. Either one would do a good job, and Union City would be able to promote from within (which they love to do). They need to make an announcement soon so that the girls can start working for next year. Each day is too valuable to waste, especially in Union City.
  3. OC should be at Lawrence Co again this year. Last year the beat BGA and lost to Page. This year they should be competitive, again. At this event, no matter who plays, there will be plenty of good games. [Edited by PowerSet on 4-25-03 1:23P]
  4. Until the coach gets control and discipline, anmd shows he cares, they won't win. At a game last year, they were getting beaten like 30-0 at halftime and the coach had never stood up. He had thrown in the towel before the tip-off. The coach has to show that he is interested in these girls' lives before they are going to go anywhere. The assistant coach looked like she would do a better job than the head coach. [Edited by PowerSet on 4-25-03 7:45A]
  5. As a middle school teacher, I can see pros and cons with most of what has been said on here. 90% of it can be traced right back to the parents. Their precious little baby is never at fault. Its the teachers who are wrong. We are held responsible for Johnny not knowing his multiplication tables, not doing well on an open-note test, not knowing hid Social Sceurity Number, and so on. Half of my 8th grade students don't know their own SS #. If a student decides to make drawings on a bubble sheet instead of putting down the correct answer, I am held responsible, and I'm not doing my job. Evidently students dont earn grades anymore, teachers give them grades. When I "fail" a student, its my fault?!? I dont give grades, students earn them. Parents seem to have a hard time realizing this. As far as social promotion goes, to some point, it is necessary. I agree that a student should not be passed if he hasn't mastered the necessary material. However, when the student has no intention of putting forth any effort, and could care less if he passes, the there has to be a line somewhere. I have some students who will never graduate high school. Their parents didn't finish school, their siblings have dropped out, etc. Sure, there are exceptions. Neither of my parents finished high school, and here I am working on my masters. But most of the kids at my school who right now could care less will never make it. If my daughter was a 12 year old 7th grader, I would not want a 17 year old boy with raging hormones in her classes, even if he is learning at her rate. There are too many things that could happen. At least in high school there are classes where the students are the same age. I am not claiming to have all the answers, or I would be rich by now, but sometimes a grade earned by a student is more than a number on a sheet of paper. [Edited by PowerSet on 4-25-03 7:39A]
  6. I would hope that only a woman would/could give a woman's point of view..........
  7. FullcourtPress- You need to find an English teacher. But, I agree with what you said (I think.......)
  8. I hope that he goes where is best for him, and not where is best for his "friends" that seem to have such an influence on him. They are trying to ride his coat-tail, and Murray is a lot closer to be with Trey than Oxford. Its hurting Trey more than its helping anyone. If he personally had a problem with Ole Miss or Barnes, thats fine, but if he's leaving because of the friends, then he needs to find new friends. I wish Trey the best, wherever he decides to go.
  9. I think that she has family that lives in Dyersburg, and she has played AAU ball for other coaches. She has many possibilities. As for the rest of the team...they will be young, as was stated, but they will have some tremendous talent. The Junior High Schools are loaded with kids from 6th thru 8th grade that can really play. The future looks bright.
  10. I really don't think that will happen. Obion County and Union City are two separate systems. Union City recently raised taxes and invested millions to renovate East Side Elementary into Union City Elementary. Their next step will be renovating/building a new middle school/high school. The city of Union City seems to be very supportive of the system, even if it means higher taxes. Obion County has relatively new elementary schools (the oldest being built around 1985) and a new Middle/High School in South Fulton (1995), and plans are being submitted to the County Commission for a new high school. Hopefully that will come to pass soon, since OCCHS is outdated and too small for its population. A couple of years ago, I figured that Union City would not be economically able to institute a building program, and thus would have to change visions (merging with Obion County Schools), but after seeing this committment within EACH system, I doubt that the two will combine. There's too much history and pride for one system to yield to the other. There will always be two separate systems until the State decides on consolidation.
  11. Which Sisco applied for the job? Marty, Clint, or Shane???
  12. WesCharge- It was a UC thread until you asked me when OC went to Murfreesboro.
  13. Sorry WesCharge, it was two times. 97-98 29-4 lost in 1st round to McMinn Co Grundy Co eventual champ 98-99 27-5 West sectional champs lost in first round to eventual champ Livingston Academy 99-00 lost in West sectional to eventual West Tn champ Ridgeway All of this compliments of www.tssaa.org It was only twice, but Decker built the Lady Rebels into a better team than they were when she arrived. I know many teams (Union City) that would kill for two trips to Murfreesboro. [Edited by PowerSet on 4-22-03 12:38P]
  14. When she was at Lake County, she took a cellar-dweller to Murfreesboro in 3 or 4 years. When she went to Obion County, it took her about 3 years to make it back to the state tourney, and then she went 3 or 4 times in 5 years. Records don't lie. The only "stink" might be Union City actually beginning to win some games. ......Just my two cents......
  15. I attended a Praxis standard setting forum in Nashville on April 2. We looked at the actual test that graduating college seniors have to take to be certified to teach that subject area. Our job was to determine the relevancy of the test for new teachers. A spokesman from the State Dept of Education talked to us and said that the requirements were still being worked on. She said that it looked like teachers would have until the 2005-2006 school year to become "Highly Qualified." The options could include the Praxis Test, OR having at least 24 hours in your subject area, OR some type of evaluation/observation option. She said that any one of these would work, so to my understanding, you wont have to have 24 hours AND pass the test. She said that there were still MANY details to work out, but it would be affecting teachers in the next couple of years. It will affect middle school teachers with only a K-8 certification the most. For others who are specialized in an area, it wont be as bad She said that there was the possibility that a teacher could be certified to teach something, but still not be "Highly Qualified." Conversely, one could be "Highly Qualified" but still not be certified to teach that subject. For example, a middle school science teacher that is certified in science might only have 21 hours of science in college. Tahts enough the be certified, but not "Highly Qualified." That same teacher might have 24 math hours in college that were required for the science curriculum, so even thought he is "Highly Qualified" to teach math, he is not certified. He is only certified in science. Its all confusing to me, and I was there, so I figure that I have thoroughly confused you. If you have any questions, let me know (Plus members send me an instant message), and I'll try my best to explain to you what we were told by the State Dept. As a young teacher, I greatly respect and admire the experienced teachers at my school. I know that some of our best are looking for jobs out of state because of the sometimes unnecessary requirements that Tennessee puts on them. This new "Highly Qualified" subject will not take the place of the experience these teachers have gained over their years. I hope that the goals are accomplished without compromising our children's educations. In agreement with ELA, I think it will hurt students in the present time, but be better for them in the long run. [Edited by PowerSet on 4-22-03 9:08A]
  16. Paul is currently teaching computer courses at Obion County Central and is assistant football coach. He was a finalist for the head coaching job at OCCHS. He was previously head coach at Fulton City (KY) High School. I've heard the rumor that Kim and Paul were a package deal, as well.
  17. What about Jeff Chandler?? Has he shown any interest??
  18. Wrong. The talent is there, the dedication and support are not. UC has three freshmen that started almost the entire season. The future could be bright if the right person gets the job. If the administration gets the best available and decides to not be satisfied with the status quo, then UC could be dramatically improved. It would take a while, but then again, nothing worth having comes cheaply.
  19. Sorry dcchoctaws!! Harrell would have to be in there, as well as Adam Griffin. Let me know of more. I will update them as needed. Thanks for catching that.
  20. OC beat Covington in October of 1994 at Covington. Justin Chandler kicked a 35 yard field goal with 2 seconds left to put OC up 17-14. That was the last year Covington was a below average team. The region was 7AAAA and included Covington, Obion Co., Ripley, Dyersburg, Raleigh Egypt, and Craigmont.
  21. Give us a hint Beave.....

  23. Lebron isn't mentally or emotionally ready for an 82 game NBA season. Athletically, he is probably more gifted than Anthony, but Carmello has had a year under a veteran coach and a Big East schedule to mature. It's gonna take Lebron a while to grow up to be a big time player. Down the road, both have bright futures, but for now, I'd take experience. Thats one thing a person isn't born with. Seems like I remember a situation in college football a couple of years back where there was an outstanding physically-gifted quarterback and an equally mature quarterback. All the "experts" banked on the one who was more gifted physically. Now, Peyton Manning plays in Honolulu the first week of February every year and Ryan Leaf ...ummmm....he uhh.....exactly. Leaf wasn't ready for the "off the field" aspects of football. Manning continues to shine. I know, this is a basketball board, but the concept is the same. That being said, I'd take Anthony. 24. They might show a clip or two, but I doubt seriously that they would destroy their ratings by showing a 7-4 basketball game. This is not meant to disrespect the two teams, No one would sit and watch the entire game, so the ratings would be bad.
  25. Obion Co. Central's Wes Moore passed for 3100 yards and 36 TDs as a junior. As a sophomore he had 2500 yards and 20 TDs. If he grows a little (6'1", 180) he could be a big-time prospect. Could depend on how much the new coach at Obion Co throws the ball. [Edited by PowerSet on 3-3-03 1:54P]
