  1. I agree with you. Tomorrow night should be two good games. Obion Co took Westview to the wire in Martin, and I'm sure they are looking forward to the Chargers coming to the Pit. This one could go either way. The boys game was a good one on Martin, too. OC has Gibson Co later in the week or this weekend. Gibson Co and Chester Co should also be woth the admission price. I dont know much about CC other than the outstandeing player they have. She alone could give GC a hard time. It could come down to the final possession. Predictions: OC vs MW 63-62 (I just dont know who will be 63 and who will be 62) GC vs CC 60-55 Gibson County will win
  2. Throw Obion County in there and 13AA has a pretty good top three teams. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see two of those three in Murfreesboro in March. [Edited by PowerSet on 1-13-03 8:12A]

    Best QB in 2003

There could be a better QB out there than Obion County's Wes Moore, but his 3,179 passing yards, 31 TDs and only 8 INT as a junior surely put his name among the leaders. Im not about to say he is the best, but he could hold his own with most of the other QBs in the state. Already holds virtually all Obion County passing records and still has a year to play. More importantly than that, he is a quality young man and has a bright future with or without football.
  4. Three receivers from Obion County have at least 850 yards receiving and around 10 TDs each. Jr.Brian Kissell (950 yds 12 TD), Sr.Colby McBride (900 yds 10 TD), and Sr.Cory Robertson (850 yds 9 TD). Oh sorry, they're from West TN, so they probably wont get mentioned when it comes to all-state.
  5. Obion County had three receivers (Brian Kissell, Colby McBride, and Cory Robertson) finish with over 800 yards receiving each. Another (Kyle Ross) had 550.
  6. Some of the best in West Tennessee are: Lake County (A)- Have fallen on hard times in the last few years, but still one of the more tradition rich programs. Won stste titles in 1980 and 1985, with runner up finishes in 1979 ans 1994. Powerful jr high team this past year, so maybe the green and gold will be back soon. Milan (AAA, AA)- Any explaination needed? Was an outstanding program before John Tucker led them to titles in the 1970's and 80's. More recently won back to back titles in 1998 (AAA) and 1999 (AA). Yet to be seen how this year's team fares. Bruceton (A)- Blessed with talent year in and year out, Sturdivant always has a team with a legitimate shot at the gold ball. Long line of running backs (Joe Longmire, Adrian Jamison, Patrick Willis) that would make any school proud. Not sure of state championships, but they do have a number of runner up finishes. Humboldt (AA, AAA)- Going through rough times right now as a new coach gets adjusted, but usually has a very competitive team on the field. The John Tucker team that lost in the Clinic Bowl in 1995 was one of the best overall teams in terms of talent that I've seen in a while.
  7. Ripley over Memphis Raleigh Egypt.

    barnes to UTM

Barnes and his son David both played at UTM. That would be interesting. The question is: would he give up the talent pool he has in Union City to try to rebuild a program?
  9. 27-17 They stopped you. Period. If your legs run half as well as your mouth, you should be Mr Football. But, if you were any a good, we would have heard of you. See ya on next year's JV squad. [Edited by PowerSet on 11-7-02 10:24A]
  10. Wes Moore Obion County 2925 yards passing 35 TDs 6 INT 6 rushing TDs
  11. Wes Moore of Obion County has 41 total TDs (35 passing and 6 rushing).
  12. confidence is one thing, but arrogance is another......
  13. Wes threw for 360 yards and 3 TDs against Humboldt. Could he help it that Humboldt played a great game? Breakdowns in special teams in one game do not keep a quarterback from having a great season. Are you saying that if Crockett Co had lost to South Side (2-7), Artis doesn't deserve any awards? I know it didn't happen, but its the same thing. Artis's stats don't lie; he had (and will keep having) a great year. But don't discount Wes's stats. His numbers show a pretty good year, too.
  14. Has anyone thought about Larry Shanks?? He played on the Tangerine Bowl team in the 60's. When he was an assistant coach and Defensive Coordinator at UTM in the 80's and 90's, he was very popular at the school, and in the community (much like McCorkle). He has collegiate coaching experience, and ties to the program, so I wouldn't be surprised to see his name somewhere in the mix. As Defensive Coordinator at Jackson Central Merry, his team is currently sitting at 10-0, so he might not have any interest in UTM, but it wouldn't be a far-fetched idea. With his defensive mind, if he got the right offensive coordinator, UTM could recruit athletes and hopefully put at least a competitive team on the field. We're talking baby steps here, but even the smallest improvement would not go unnoticed. Just a thought........
  15. Mario McElrath from Union City was AA Mr Football his Junior year (2000) and led the Tornadoes to the Clinic Bowl that year (lost by one TD to a very talented Alcoa team). Had size (6'1" 215 lb) and speed (4.4) and was nearly impossible to bring down (when and if you ever caught him). Was being recruited by nearly every SEC school and some others, but ran into trouble with the law before his Senior season ever began. Got dismissed from the team as a result of his decisions. College career never materialized. Unfortunate waste of talent. [Edited by PowerSet on 10-31-02 8:27A]
  16. In the early 1960's Obion County had about 6 or 7 high schools in the county. Most of them were small (less than 200 students) and had the name of the town they were located in. To be more efficient and economical, the school board and county voted to consolidate and form one centrally located school. These schools came together in 1962, I believe, to form Obion County Central High School (Obion Co, Obion Central, Central, or OCCHS are common abbreviations). There are about 850-900 students at Central. The school is located in Troy, which is close to the geographic center of the county. Union City High School and South Fulton High school are also in Obion County, but have different campuses. Hope this clears everything up.
  17. The coaches at OC feel that they have an advantage when the field gets slippery. A wet field negates the speed of many teams, which plays into OC's hands. Opposing defenses have no idea where the receievers are going to cut during a route. The offense know the routes, and thus have an advantage. They practice weekly with a wet ball, even if the forecast isnt calling for rain. Also, they rotate fesh, dry balls in the game constantly if it is raining. As far as fumbling after the catch, they are just as susceptable as any other team. But, as far as affecting the passing game, they will still throw it in the rain. Hope this answers your question.
  18. Most teams run the ball to open up the passing game. If the defense can't stop the running game, then the offense keeps running. OC's offense is the exact opposite. They pass to set up the run. If the opposing defense doens't stop the pass, then OC keeps on passing. OC does have a running game, they just choose not to use it. I agree, its not as explosive as the passing game, but nonetheless it is an option. Since Wes had thrown only 6 interceptions this year (and 31 TD's) I think the saying "if it ain't broke dont fix it" applies here. So far this year, no one has really stopped the passing attack. Covington did the best job, but the Rebels still moved the ball on the Chargers. Wes had 383 yards and 3 TD's against Humboldt, but mistakes in other facets of the game hurt OC. Don't give OC a playoff win yet, but don't count them out either.
  19. Humboldt came into the game ready to play, and made plays. OC didnt make plays. Its that simple. Humboldt scored defensively (interception return for a TD), and on special teams (safety on an OC punt attempt, and the ensuing kickoff return for a TD). Both defenses played well, despite the numbers put up by OC. In the end, Humboldt made the big plays and did what they had to do to win. In OC's defense, their leading reciever (Cory Robertson-40 catches for over 700 yards and about 10 TD's) was out with a knee injury suffered last week vs Dyer Co. Another important cog in the Rebels offense (Colby McBride-about 30 catches for about 700 yards and 10 TD's) was throwing up all night on the sidelines. This is not to say that with them, the outcome would have been different, but it couldn't have hurt. The fact is, at least on that night, Humboldt had the better team. 20. As a middle school coach (in a rural area), I am reaping the benefits of a successful pee-wee league. Our boys are taught to win, but not at the expense of learning the game. Our coaches do a great job of putting these children in positions that they would likely play when they begin playing for me. We have size limits that keep a 250 pound kid from running the ball against 75 pound kids that wouldnt have a prayer of tackling him. That kid, though he could @@@@ up yards as a pee-wee, would be a lineman for the rest of his career. Our coaches are sensitive to that and play the kids in the positions that they would likely play later in life. They are taught skills relevant to thier position so that they will benefit most form it. I mean really--- how many 300 pound running backs have you seen lately?? Even in the pros, this would be absurd. Other than a gimmick play for short yardage, it doesn't happen. There have been teams with a win-at-all-costs attitudes. In the long run, it hurts the athlete the most. When a kid runs the ball every down as a pee-wee and then ends up a guard on the school team, his ego is shot. HE might end up quitting simply because he isnt "the man" anymore. I know, this is all speculation, but the truth still remains in the numbers: how many kids that play pee-wee ball (or for that matter middle school, or high school ball) ever have careers in the sport? Very few. How many have to grow up to support a family? 100%. Whats going to be more beneficial to these kids in the future: winning a game or doing their job for the team? I know that I can speak for my boys when I say that being a winner isnt always measured on the scoreboard. [Edited by PowerSet on 10-25-02 1:42P] [Edited by PowerSet on 10-26-02 6:31P]
  21. 2264 yards 28 TD 5 Int 3 different receivers w/ at least 600 yards Has to be considered among the best
  22. Wes Moore Obion Co Junior QB 2264 yards 28 TD 5 Int Most of this yardage has come despite limited playing time in the 2nd half. He has rarely seen the field after halftime as Freshman QB's have done mop-up duty in most of the games.
