  1. Maryville needs more size on the O-Line. It's a shame that the local teams and in-district teams haven't figured out GQ's schemes yet. Maryville has built a power house full of good high school players. How many Maryville players in the last 15 years have started FBS or FCS games? All you have to do is punch them in the face, no team should succeed in 6A football with 220 lb offensive lineman. There are some lean years coming.
  2. This topic comes up every year, it's just high school football and not worth the cost of travel just for some fan spectacle. There is a lot that factors into those games when teams travel, and teams can be off especially when you are dealing with 14-18 year olds on the road away from home traveling and nerves, just like Miami Central the other day, great team but got drilled by Dematha. But then again these games do show how states stack up against each other. I remember years ago Austin East traveling to Independence to play Chris Leaks team and losing 77-6, then coming back to TN and winning a state championship.
  3. Actually I need to go back to school and learn math....he has 9, i forgot about the runner up years. LOL
  4. As a Maryville Alum and La Vergne resident who gets his hair cuts in a Pro-Smyrna Barbershop, I'm looking forward to some good old fashion trash talking this week. I went home for Thanksgiving and saw some of the Maryville players at my dads church including the running back they look pretty big, hopefully they can win.
  5. I'll still pull for the Rebs but I figure I should atleast root for a team close to my voting district, lol. My neighbor goes to Hillsboro games but I can't go there . Probably will check out Smyrna and Oakland soon. Thanks!
  6. I've been out of school for a long time now, and my college town football was less than exciting. Now that I live in the Mid-state area I need a new team to watch. I live in La Vergne, I have no plans on going to any of their games. Maybe Smyrna?
  7. Stefan understands the special place that H.S. sports has in our lives - it's a big part of what makes him the best sportswriter in E.T.. I have been out of Blount County for a while and wondered what happened to Mr. Cooper. Now, he did care about sports. How can you forget him on that bike, I remember seeing him riding up Alcoa Highway in a light rain headed to Knox West for the District BBAll Tourney we offered him a ride but he just waved his somewhat still light cigarete and kept rolling. I would him from time to time at softball games and even swim events. I hope they let him write more than the DT did, they had to many writers, and I cannot read anything Sam Al Bundy writes, he is always a grumpy gus.
  8. Gov man, I might have missed the boat on some Willy B scandals, but I know that WB has had some good athletes and teams from time to time who you could not find a write up on in the Daily Times. Local papers should be about local events and people and this especially means high school sports in a place like Blount County. The 4 schools there have been sending kids to colleges all over the country in lots of different sports, i.e. track and field, softball, baseball, and so on, but from the looks of the sports section you would think that it was a small NASCAR magazine with wildlife feature in it.
  9. The Daily Times has the most un-user friendly website ever. It is a piece for sure, I know you want me to register but jeeze, let me atleast look at a story or two or six!! I guess the adults in town have too much pull and power so no scandal really makes it in the paper unless it deals with the kids, especially Maryville High students.
  10. Call me crazy, but year in and out they cover more about NASCAR and NASCAR related drama, and also local hunting then any local sports. They have lots of opportunities to write positive stories about local athletes especially during football season, yet Alcoa wins state and they get a few articles, but it seems like they have writers coming out of the wood works to talk about Maryville's loss. Why is this paper still in existance?!
  11. Don Story - thats a name I haven't heard used with Maryville football in a while. He was one heck of a coach, wasn't he? Giving back to Maryville High after retirement - one real fine man. I met him when I was a student at MMS. He came back to the schools and took the job as the bus coordinator. When you realize that this guy left MCS did well on the Stock Market and came back to still give his time to make sure the busses ran on schedule and the kids were taken care of, it means a lot. I believe he financed that weight center. That is part of the winning tradition of Maryville, selfless men and women taking their time to help make these young men better. Coach Ellis could have any head coaching job in this state, as well as Coach Gaylor. GQ should be coaching in atleast 1-AA right now.
  12. We may be small in some spots - but go ask the hosses at Riverdale just how physical Maryville was Friday night. I'd say the general consensus is that we mashed them pretty well. Exactly, big doesn't always mean physical. This is where all the conditioning and weight lifting comes into play. Maryville has an excellent system and it went into overdrive once the amazing Don Story athletic center was built. Those kids are ready and will be able to match up with anyone White Station lines up. All the talk last week was about how big Riverdale was and how they would control the line of scrimmage and they were run off the ball all night.
  13. This thread is dead, where are all the White Station fans???? Come on we can't let our thread get surpassed by all the offseason threads from all the teams who are at home.
