  1. Maryville needs more size on the O-Line. It's a shame that the local teams and in-district teams haven't figured out GQ's schemes yet. Maryville has built a power house full of good high school players. How many Maryville players in the last 15 years have started FBS or FCS games? All you have to do is punch them in the face, no team should succeed in 6A football with 220 lb offensive lineman. There are some lean years coming.
  2. This topic comes up every year, it's just high school football and not worth the cost of travel just for some fan spectacle. There is a lot that factors into those games when teams travel, and teams can be off especially when you are dealing with 14-18 year olds on the road away from home traveling and nerves, just like Miami Central the other day, great team but got drilled by Dematha. But then again these games do show how states stack up against each other. I remember years ago Austin East traveling to Independence to play Chris Leaks team and losing 77-6, then coming back to TN and winning a state championship.
  3. Actually I need to go back to school and learn math....he has 9, i forgot about the runner up years. LOL
  4. As a Maryville Alum and La Vergne resident who gets his hair cuts in a Pro-Smyrna Barbershop, I'm looking forward to some good old fashion trash talking this week. I went home for Thanksgiving and saw some of the Maryville players at my dads church including the running back they look pretty big, hopefully they can win.
  5. I'll still pull for the Rebs but I figure I should atleast root for a team close to my voting district, lol. My neighbor goes to Hillsboro games but I can't go there . Probably will check out Smyrna and Oakland soon. Thanks!
  6. I've been out of school for a long time now, and my college town football was less than exciting. Now that I live in the Mid-state area I need a new team to watch. I live in La Vergne, I have no plans on going to any of their games. Maybe Smyrna?
  7. Stefan understands the special place that H.S. sports has in our lives - it's a big part of what makes him the best sportswriter in E.T.. I have been out of Blount County for a while and wondered what happened to Mr. Cooper. Now, he did care about sports. How can you forget him on that bike, I remember seeing him riding up Alcoa Highway in a light rain headed to Knox West for the District BBAll Tourney we offered him a ride but he just waved his somewhat still light cigarete and kept rolling. I would him from time to time at softball games and even swim events. I hope they let him write more than the DT did, they had to many writers, and I cannot read anything Sam Al Bundy writes, he is always a grumpy gus.
  8. Gov man, I might have missed the boat on some Willy B scandals, but I know that WB has had some good athletes and teams from time to time who you could not find a write up on in the Daily Times. Local papers should be about local events and people and this especially means high school sports in a place like Blount County. The 4 schools there have been sending kids to colleges all over the country in lots of different sports, i.e. track and field, softball, baseball, and so on, but from the looks of the sports section you would think that it was a small NASCAR magazine with wildlife feature in it.
  9. The Daily Times has the most un-user friendly website ever. It is a piece for sure, I know you want me to register but jeeze, let me atleast look at a story or two or six!! I guess the adults in town have too much pull and power so no scandal really makes it in the paper unless it deals with the kids, especially Maryville High students.
  10. Call me crazy, but year in and out they cover more about NASCAR and NASCAR related drama, and also local hunting then any local sports. They have lots of opportunities to write positive stories about local athletes especially during football season, yet Alcoa wins state and they get a few articles, but it seems like they have writers coming out of the wood works to talk about Maryville's loss. Why is this paper still in existance?!
  11. Don Story - thats a name I haven't heard used with Maryville football in a while. He was one heck of a coach, wasn't he? Giving back to Maryville High after retirement - one real fine man. I met him when I was a student at MMS. He came back to the schools and took the job as the bus coordinator. When you realize that this guy left MCS did well on the Stock Market and came back to still give his time to make sure the busses ran on schedule and the kids were taken care of, it means a lot. I believe he financed that weight center. That is part of the winning tradition of Maryville, selfless men and women taking their time to help make these young men better. Coach Ellis could have any head coaching job in this state, as well as Coach Gaylor. GQ should be coaching in atleast 1-AA right now.
  12. We may be small in some spots - but go ask the hosses at Riverdale just how physical Maryville was Friday night. I'd say the general consensus is that we mashed them pretty well. Exactly, big doesn't always mean physical. This is where all the conditioning and weight lifting comes into play. Maryville has an excellent system and it went into overdrive once the amazing Don Story athletic center was built. Those kids are ready and will be able to match up with anyone White Station lines up. All the talk last week was about how big Riverdale was and how they would control the line of scrimmage and they were run off the ball all night.
  13. This thread is dead, where are all the White Station fans???? Come on we can't let our thread get surpassed by all the offseason threads from all the teams who are at home.
  14. I see. Toki had great footwork and would run option and make runs during practice, but there as no reason for him to run. He had a stable of backs: Potter, Presnell, Dyer, Hammontree (cody), and the list goes on. Giles was a smart QB. He was not the most athletic, but he understood the game, schemes, and numbers I believe he has the record for higest GPA ever on the team, LOL. Since my school days I have seen the new QB's come into the Maryville program and have not been let down once. Quarles plays his best so whoever is suiting up on a given friday is no scrub. I have only seen Juhlin play a few times, but can tell from his numbers that he is top notch. I wonder how he or any of the last few QB's would have played if they had Maryville's 1998 line, Matt Sharp, James Richardson, Issaac Simerly, Chuck Prugh, and Nick Black??
  15. Aaron Douglas, Maryville High School Mr. Football 2006, 2007
  16. Almost doesn't count, unless you are winning the gold ball then no one cares about your winning percentage, the Wing-T is garbage.
  17. Call me crazy but I believe Toki McCray is ahead of both of them, they are nice QB's and winners, but Toki McCray was better.
  18. LOL, White Station is not far from the "Mound". Memphis fans are a bit cocky, white White Station might beat up on Maryville in Basketball, they need to remember that this is football, and West TN has not dominiated much in the higher divisions. Mithcell fans were all over the site posting about winning state...now their at home. Maryville has not played a perfect season, but has had a better year than White Station. This game will not be much of a contest. You look at their schedule...its not impressive, Memphis fans think all their teams are great, but WS schedule is pretty bad. Their two losses were also butt kickings and I don't care if they were D2 schools, they were still beat up on. Andy by the way, 0-10 in 2001, really, Maryville was already racking up gold balls back then, welcome to the party, now please leave.
  19. Just passed the stadium, nice crowd, all so noticed the Riverdale sign, "can't copy our swag"....I hate the term "swag". Congrats Maryville, and you have proven just what the rest of the country outside of the 615 and 901 already know.....You are the big boys, and all big boy pants are molded in your image!!!
  20. Looks like Riverdale is a little weak in the defensive backfield, they are getting killed in that two deep zone, and they continue to over pursue up front. They just trying to use their weight to push around people and are not thinking very much right now.
  21. Wow, what is wrong with the Daily Times??? Don't they have like 17 sports guys for that paper??? Is Sam Bundy still there? I for the life of me cannot stand that paper, my picture was in it recently though . You have two amazing teams in the county and if you want any decent sports news, you have to go online or get the Knoxville News Stanktinal. Its just like before the Maryville Red Bank game where they did the feature on Gerald Riggs with no shirt on, but this time it looks like they are doing a feature on ghost man in ghost print.
  22. Omg...you are living in the past aren't you. What team have you been watching that you think can put up 34 points on Riverdale? There isn't a Team anywhere in East Tennessee that has a defense anywhere near the caliber of Riverdale. And I know you havent seen this team if you think they rely on the wing T to get it done. They have an outstanding passing game and a 3rd down conversion rate thats off the chart. You keep living in the past and The Warriors will continue to dominate " The Big Boys" in the state... And you have seen every team in East Tenn play to verify this statement right? You are making your guys sound scary, and literally unbeatable. And yet, they have managed to lose twice right?? And I will give you that they can pass it decently, but I am betting they do it ten times or less a game. Saying any Wing T team is an "outstanding" passing team is a bit of an oxy moron don't you think? But we all know that is all Aydelott knows. Again, not saying they cannot throw it at all but when he was at Hillsboro that was definitely the case. Maybe coming and getting help from our coach helped him a couple of years ago. I do look forward to seeing this two loss team that has dominated the entire state though. Apparently I didn't type in English when I said I lived in Mid Tenn now and have seen this team play. From what I have seen, it is very realistic to say that Maryville can score 34 on Riverdale. Maryville has a high powered offense and a playbook the size of "War and Peace". This is a Semifinal game at home for the Rebels and GQ will not hold back. I have seen Riverdales defense, they are big and strong, but this is not WWE Royal Rumble, they still have to run plays ans stop shcemes. And as far as living in the past goes, Maryville's success is very recent history, I'm not talking about 1970's games against Brentwood academy. And I am even going to drive to Maryville for the game..... yum, yum, eat em up.
  23. Living in the midstate and getting to see some of the games here, I feel that Riverdale is a very battle tested and ready team. They have played pretty good teams all year and have managed a nice record for the season. With that said, I think the Wing-T is the worst offense in football. It is a pain to watch and requires no passing, which I happend to be a fan of. I also do not see Maryville losing this game. I was at the last game Maryville lost at home in 2001 to Morristown West (minus Chavez McCray). This game reminds me (A WHOLE lot) of the Red Bank Maryville Game in 2001. Red Bank was even #9 in the country was supposed to detrain the championship train with their stud Riggs and his partner Mr. Rich. They even had Maryville Red Bank joint FCA pamphlets. Anyway, I do not see GQ losing twice in the same Decade to a Wing-T offense. He is going to put together a nice package to break it up, probably put 8 in the box with a corner playing in some, and he will blitz a ton and make sure the Fullback is hit every play no matter if he has the ball or not.
