  1. Good players do not always mean you are going to win. Phil Fulmer had some pretty good returning players and posted a wonderful 5-6 record. Bruce Pearl inherited what most would consider a little less than average team and has won the SEC East. If good players automatically means wins explain:Hilham 36 Allons 35
  2. From what I hear, both of the coaches you mentioned definitely measure up.
  3. Could anyone explain to me how in the world a team can go 12-0 in district play, winning the district by 4 games and the coach not be coach of the year? That is unquestionably one of the most unbelievable things I've ever seen. The Coach from the team that won it record is under .500. This occurred in district 7AA. I guess I could say the MVP coming off a 3rd or 4th team is more believable than the coaching situation. If LA was supposed to have or does have the most talent could possibly factor into the equation to a certain degree. But winning the district by 4 games and going undefeated, what kind of credentials does it take to get Coach of the year. Melton, you deserved it but what can you do about it? Nothing, but you deserved it.
  4. Can anyone give me the dates for the Overton Co. Jr. Wildcat Fundraiser which involves the returning elementary basketball players? It is held at the Hilham gym.
  5. I did want to make it clear in no way am I downplaying the winning teams accomplishments they should be commended on a job well done. I am only saying we shouldn't expect any top notch officiating because these guys at these so-called "state " tournaments are definitely not very good at their jobs. How about this, let's have our own tournament and call it the H-O-G-E-Y-E state tournament and maybe I Love HS Football would consider being one of the refs. I know he would be considerably better than the Springfield refs and the Sr. Citizens Club at Murfreesboro.
  6. I Love Hs Football your points are well taken. The officiating was horrible. Did it cost Allons the game? Probably not. I want to make a couple of points. First, is this a bona fide "state" tournament? What is the win-loss record a team must have to participate in this "state" tournament? I know a few teams in this tourney whose record is even BELOW .500. having said that, how can it be called a "state" tournament? How many teams from, let's say, upper East Tennessee participated in this tournament? I'd say S. Pittsburgh was about as East Tennessee as it got. The point I am trying to make is why should we expect those TNT refs to be any better than any of the upper cumberland refs. Secondly, everybody knows in order to be one of the officials at the james C. haile you must be able to buy coffee at McDonald's at the senior citizen rate. You know how certain insurances or other benefits you must be 65 or older, well you must be 65 or older to ref at the james c. haile. I am not one to age discriminate but seriously how well can a man that age get up and down the floor. As far as the TNT ref showing up the kids, he reminded me a lot of the local ref that a lot of people call Ronnie Dunn(due to his resemblance to Dunn of "Brooks and Dunn"). Only difference is Ronnie likes to show his great "power" to the crowd. He pays more attention to the crowd than he does the game. Finally, I'm just saying that the term "state" tournament may be being used a little loosely.
  7. I'm the one who started this topic and I am also a parent of an Allons player. You need to read how I started my first post as far as being proud for Hilham. I started out by congratulating Hilham and Coach Kennard. So be a little more selective in who you make accusations toward.
  8. One more thing I failed to mention as for cockiness to me a kid has to have a certain amount cockiness to be good. Confidence is sometimes misperceived as cockiness.
  9. The negative talk about a kid whether it be about Kendall Melton or whoever that comes from adults is definitely not good. But, all the other schools cheering against Allons (in my opinion) was just being for the underdog. I don't know that is was a direct slam on Allons(maybe to a certain extent). I would venture to say that just about everyone has heard the old saying "it is lonely at the top." The crowd was feeding off the energy and effort exerted by Hilham's players as well as their coach. I would have to think if I played for Allons, seeing so many people rooting for the other team would be the ultimate motivator. But, it appeared that the Hawks played the game in kind of a matter of fact state of mind. Secondly, if you are a member of the Hawks watching the crowd, especially those not from Hilham, yell so loudly against you is basically paying you a compliment. When you are the measuring stick for boys grade school basketball in this county, your opponents will bring their A game every night. Everybody wants to knock the best off their pedestal. As I said in my earlier post, no matter how good you are you have to be ready to play every night. Maybe this will be a good life lesson for the boys. No matter how good you are (and the Hawks are good) you can't take anything for granted. It was bitter pill to swallow for the Hawks, but whether in sports or in life in general I'm sure it won't be the last one.
  10. Congrats to the Hilham boys on their victory over Allons in the county championship game. Coach Kennard did one heck of a job. This is one time when talent did not overcome desire, hustle, and emotion. And Coach Kennard was just as emotionally fired up as the players. It is refreshing to see a coach with that much energy and passion. As for the Hawks, maybe a game they simply took for granted. When you have the X marked on your chest every game, you need to come prepared every night. The Hawks appeared unprepared. I would rate this (at least in games I can remember) as the biggest upset in Overton Co. junior high basketball. This, to me, would rank with Villanova beating G-Town, Douglas over Tyson, or USA over USSR in Olympic hockey. But, I guess that is why the games are played. After a narrow win over Rickman earlier in the year, I had a fellow I consider knowledgable in basketball tell me somebody in the county would beat Allons boys by year's end. I said "no way". I guess he knew what he was talking about unfortunately for the Hawks.
  11. I too would like to congratulate the Allons girls and boys on their excellent performances at the JC Haile. But, I want to center this post around the Allons boys. Irregardless of the outcome of their Overton Co. championship game against Hilham or what they do at the TNT, they have had a remarkable season. 27-2 is a record anyone would be proud of. What impresses me the most is they did this despite some situations beyond their control. First and foremost, the loss of their coach of a year ago Richard Melton. Back in the early spring, Coach Melton got the job of head basketball coach at Livingston Academy. The loss of Coach Melton was devastating for most of the kids. Coach Melton was not only a guy they respected, he was also their "friend." He could blister them on the ballcourt, but when LA had a home game, most of the team would be sitting around him. With the loss of Coach Melton, the coaching situation at the school was left in disarray. No coach and nowhere to turn. Having to deal with losing their coach was a major task. These kids have also overcome some internal problems which they did not cause. But, the boys persevered through it all. Most everyone familiar with the situation knew this was going to be a very talented team. This team is made up of several kids who play 2 sports and 1 or 2 kids who play 3. But, in a lot of cases this does not automatically turn into wins. Fortunately, for the 2005-2006 edition of the Allons Hawks being talented paid off. Pat yourselves on the back boys. What you accomplished this season is truly commendable. For the ones going to high school, I'm sure Coach Melton is looking forward to your arrival. For the returners to Allons Elementary basketball, I wish you good luck.
