  1. Just a little preparation and basic knowledge would be great. He opened the broadcast saying West had never defeated Maryville. Where does he get his info?
  2. So I've been listening to Doc, Jeff, & Heather this a.m. (Thursday) and so far here's what I've taken away: Heather says that "there have been some teams that have talked trash about Marvyille in the past" and as a result "Coach Quarles has ran up the score on them." {She didn't give any specific incidents} At some point, Fulton players challenged Maryville to a scrimmage, but Maryville refused. (from a caller) Campbell County competed very well with Fulton in a pre-season scrimmage, matching them score-for-score. (from a caller) A few years back, Maryville was playing South Doyle and was lining up to attempt a field goal at the end of the first half (up 3 scores). The Rebels jumped off side, the SD fans got rowdy, so George sent in his offense after the penalty and threw a long touchdown class -- proving he will "jack up the score". (from a caller "Buddy") Heather doesn't like it because neither Maryville nor Fulton will play teams from the Chattanooga area or the middle Tennessee area. She stated, "California high school teams fly places to play other teams, so why can't Maryville or Fulton?" Interesting morning I thought! Here's my one legitimate thought I have about Fulton scoring 80+ the past two weeks. I keep hearing folks defend Fulton by saying they "just can't help it." And lots of good reasons are given. But in the past few years, with the talent Maryville has had and considering some of the opponents they've faced (my Governors included), WHY have Maryville never put up 80? The Rebels had 66 last year against WB, and that's the highest I remember them scoring in a while. Would it not make sense with some of the talent, depth disparity over the years, that Maryville would have had one of these 80+ nights if indeed "it's just impossible not to?" Or is Fulton at a different level than even Maryville has been? Serious question.
  3. StrongX ... you think me and you need to go over to George's house tonight later on and help him game plan some for this one? Sounds like he may need some help. P.S. If you really want to make West mad, you just mispronounce the Cottrell kid's last name. I slipped up last year and referred to him as "cuh-TRAIL" and I had an irate fan come in to the press box to let me know.
  4. you guys are killing me. Should have never started listing names ... just trying to prove that there are "some" people in Maryville who still like me! You know how much I love your Rebelsman. Hope you and your family are well.
  5. Jake, of course we just get to see things one time in the press box, in real time, but my memory tells me that it seemed like we might have rushed the throw on the play in question. Of course, I could be "misremembering" but from watching film, is there a chance that if qb delays throw by a second or so, that the play works? Or was the db laying back waiting on it no matter what?
  6. With that kind of attitude Jake, we might want to ask you to serve on the selection committee!!!
  7. You gotta know that was simply an oversight on my part MLREB! I know of no better friend on these boards! You remember how mad you use to make me back in the day? Took me awhile to get you figured out. And btw, I still believe my Govs are better than Greenback, that they WILL still beat the Mountaineers this year, and that you can safely park your car at Mike White Field without fear of getting your tires slashed or your windows broken. Of course, I am a homer though.
  8. Actually, to expand on that Dave. From 1997 - 2007, WB was 66-57 (average of 6 wins per year). During that 11 year stretch, they had 7 winning seasons and one .500 season. They qualified for the play-offs 9 out of those 11 years. They were 4 - 3 vs Alcoa during that stretch, but only 1 - 10 versus Maryville. For a lot of programs, it would be considered a pretty successful 11 year run, but unfortunately (or fortunately i suppose their fans would say) our close neighbors, Maryville and Alcoa were so successful on a state level, that WB's accomplishments didn't seem that great. Another disappointment was the fact that my Governors could never crack into the third round of the play-offs. We made it to second round 3 times, but we've never played that 13th game in any season. BTW, since 2007, WB is 16 - 46 ... BUT we have maintained our 17 year winning streak against Heritage!!!
  9. We are discussing the possibility of honoring a "team" each year when we do the induction. The 2007 football team would certainly merit discussion. One stipulation for individual athletes is that you must have been out of William Blount for a minimum of 10 years before induction.
  10. No question that Charles will be someone to be considered as we move into the future selection process. He was certainly one of the best linemen ever to wear the orange & blue.
  11. Good stuff APB. As far as your contention that inductees did all four years at WB, that will most likely be the standard with all athlete inductees. As far as coaches and community supporters (my actual designation), that rule won't always be applicable. Fair enough? You're pretty much spot on with your recollections. I could "nitpick" one or two little trivial things but not much! You've got a computer for a brain my friend.
  12. So you would have left off Coach Wallace, Skipper, and me?
  13. Had the incredible privilege of being the MC for the very first William Blount Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony this weekend. It was a really good night. Here's who was inducted into the first class: Bill Wallace - first WB boy's basketball coach Barry "Skipper" Murrin - long-time Governor assistant football coach Robbie Lee - Wrestling Stan Ballard - basketball Rose Ballard Justice - basketball J. Chris Whitehead - baseball Becca Beverly Wein - Track & Field Alan Horton - Cross Country Christina Joskolski - Golf Libby Conley French - softball Gary Stinnett -- ??still not sure?? It was such a great honor to recognize and see some true WB legends. All of the living honorees were able to attend with the exception of Robbie Lee. Both Chris and Stan had family members there to accept on their behalf. Just a great night. Anyone familiar with / remember any of those listed above? Stories please.
  14. Rebels, Seems like we actually kicked a field goal for the win against DB. I remember standing right behind the goalposts and watching the ball just barely drop beyond the crossbar. Reese went back out and played the last series of defense with a severely separated shoulder (he was pretty tough). That was the year the Gov's might have had a shot at getting close to Murfreesboro, but Reese was not able to play next game and without him, the Governors were just not the same team.
  15. Big Dave, Every summer when I was a kid we drove to Daytona Beach for vacation. We'd always leave around 5 in the morning and stop for breakfast at a greasy spoon in Cartersville. I want to think it was called Morelli's maybe. It was right off the interstate seems like. Familiar with it?
  16. I'm the "classless" P.A. announcer. When you all punted in the third quarter it was your first punt of the game. My introduction was being complimentary of your team ... not classless. If anything, WB fans should have taken offense. Sorry it didn't come across that way to you. Your team played an incredible game last night and it certainly will not surprise me if the Redskins don't have a very productive season this year. #3, #21, & #10 are the real deal. And your kicker is definitely a weapon. Good luck the rest of the way. Once again, sorry you took offense ... it was certainly not my intent!
  17. Stars, Maybe Brother Ronnie could have done the Anthem at the start and came back and done "Sweet Beulah Land" at halftime?
  18. Las week before the jamboree the scoreboard was tested, new lights installed, and everything was working perfectly. What happened Friday night was some type of technical glitch with either the control panel or the cables running to it. It was completely unforeseen and could have happened anywhere and to anyone. The lack of the flag was an oversight. Kind of similar to hosting the jamboree and not having the National Anthem because no one thought to bring a copy. (Dang it, now I've answered my trivia question I asked earlier in this thread). It's funny, because I've received different opinions of the traffic/parking situation. Many said it was terrible, while many others said it was handled well. Not sure on that one, but I do know that when you only have two or three entrance/exits to the entire school lot, it's gonna be a nightmare when you have a huge crowd show up. What's really amazing gang, is when you get to that point in life where you can like (cheer for) both the Govs and the Rebels. Obviously, my blood line is blue & orange and I'm a Governor for Life. But I'm also pretty high on Maryville. Getting ready to lead a high school guy's small group with one of their coaches, live next door to another one, and across the street from one of their best young players on the team; several of my youth group members are on the football team and cheering and in the band, and I'm close personal friends with Stars, Red Rebels, Rebel Ron, MHS82, Pepvol, mhs, and StrongX (see best young player across the street reference) just to name a few. How cool would it be to see Maryville, Alcoa, Heritage, and WB open up the season with wins? I'm gonna predict it!
  19. Trivia question ... see if anyone can remember: When Maryville last hosted the jamboree in their appointed year (not last year when they hosted in place of Heritage) what was unusual about the National Anthem?
  20. Trust me Gov91 ... William Blount has Maryville "circled on their calendar" every year! We're just having some fun with you. I'm not certain what you are basing your "every couple of years" theory on though. Having said that, after talking with Coach Ridge and Snoderly and Garner ... I am excited about this season. Justin has this team headed in the right direction!
  21. Stars, I know that J.D. went on to be one of the best players Friendsville ever had. Did the Baldwin guy go on to play in high school or beyond?
  22. I believe Governors91 might be on to something. In the history of the Maryville vs WB series, every time that Maryville has beaten the Governors by more than 50 points, the Governors have bounced back to win the game the following year.
  23. Stars, For whatever reason, my sophomore year of high school Brian Mason decided to pop in on the football team at Friendsville one afternoon. He and J.D. Satterfield proceeded to have one of the greatest high school fights I've ever witnessed. I would never have wanted to mess with either of those two! And while we're on the topic of Heritage greats, we can't forget "Ug" ...
  24. In their first or second season, the Mountaineers had a running back, Richard Hyatt, who scored 6 or 7 td's in one game. I always thought that was fairly impressive. Before Cermak their was another linebacker/ rb ... was it Wrobleski maybe? He was really good. Actually wanted to come to Maryville at one time and was denied by the middle school principal at that time ... at least that was the strong rumor.
