  1. I feel what gomab is talking about, but I think that a lot of the problem with the NBA is the long season. College Ball is the best, but the good team only play 35-38 games a year at the most. I really enjoy watching the NBA at PLayoff time. It's amazing, but they actually play defense in the playoffs. That comeback that Boston made against New Jersey last year was unbelievable. The NBA is great at playoff time.
  2. Coach NOrris was quoted in the Oak Ridger as saying that ulmire's injury is not as serious as previously thought and he may be available for Friday night's showdown at Powell.
  3. This is the second thread about what went on between Higgins and Humphreys. I talked to Higgins brother about it and he said that Jon was just having some fun with Lee and that they have played pick up together. I've played a lot of pick up with Higgins too and he's a nice guy and a good player. I think Humphreys will definitely be a better college player than Higgins but his jumper is not better than Higgins' right now. That is a fact.
  4. I think your rankings are right on the money, chill. I saw the Powell/Fulton game and it was one of those things where a good team got really hot and things snowballed. I don't think Fulton could win like that again in 30 tries, and Powell had some guys out sick. The scary thing about Powell is their poor guard play. Powell has guards that are quick and can shoot, but they are not strong, either physically or with the ball. They play very well when against mediocre guards. However, when they play against quick and physical guards, Powell's kids can't protect it and they panic. Powell will win Distrcit 3AAA, but I'm starting to think that the only reason they will is because Oak Ridge's point guard, who is better than anybody Powell has at guard, is out for the season with an ankle injury. Unless Powell's guard play improves, it will be one and out at the Region Tournament.
  5. Yes, that's right, Karns is leading the district by themselves I think at 6-2. Powell is second at 5-2. But in the even of a tie between Powell and Karns, Powell will have the tie breaker because they have already beaten Karns twice, their only losses. I think that Coach Henson is doing a nice job there. He had a basket-case named Clayton Morris transfer into Karns and he's molded Morris into a pretty nice player this year. Cameron Crane is their best player, he could definitely play small college or NAIA at the 2 guard.
  6. January 17 Powell @ Carter game was rescheduled for February 5. Both the Boys and Girls will be playing that night.
  7. Lane is at UNC-Wilmington after two years at Georgia Tech.
  8. Gulmire is not the Wildcats best defensive player in my eyes, but he is a very solid point guard and I really like his game. I was surprised when I saw that Oak Ridge lost at Karns last night, but now I see why. Oak Ridge is definitely better than Karns. That is a tough loss for them in the district.
  9. I agree, they have lost a lot of ball games but they look really solid everytime I see them play. I think that they are streaky with their defense might hurt them down the road.
  10. In a big 3AAA matchup last night, Powell erased a ten point 4th quarter deficit on the road at Karns to come away with a big win 71-63. Powell finally played with mental toughness that has been lacking all year. That was a statement game against a big rival and if the Panthers continue to play that hard, they will be most dangerous come tournament time. They should thank Oak Ridge for spanking them last week by 20 and giving Powell the wake up call they needed. That Oak Ridge at Powell game on January 31 should be a huge game and the winner probably will win the regular season district championship.

    AP Poll

Believe it, most of these voters are regionally biased and don't have clue.
  12. Best Teams: Maryville, Bearden (this will probably be the Championship Game...unless) Dangerous Teams that could win the Region: Oak Ridge, Powell, William Blount, Farragut Teams that nobody wants to play right now: West, Central Maryville: Solid, but are they more than just one guy? They remind me of Powell when Lee Roberts was there. Though he was not quite the player Humphreys is, they played the same way and too many times other people on the team got caught watching Lee play. Bearden: They will be in the Championship game, period. They are well coached, fundamentally solid and they have good inside outside game. Kruze is a nice player. Powell: Very talented, but not enough leadership on the team. Many of these guys think they know more than the coach, which believe me they don't. This team could win substate or flameout in the first round of the Region tournament. Oak Ridge: Streaky. The point guard, Gulmire is pretty good but he's still young, Winfree is the definition of a streak shooter, cold one day, can't miss the next. They are pretty athletic too. They could definitley make some noise. William Blount: I haven't seen them play but they beat Science Hill so there is definitely talent there. West: I predicted that they would upset Bearden or Maryville before the season was over and I was right. When I saw them play at Christmas I was very impressed with the overall effort that Lindsey got out his team and they had good chemistry as well. They don't know that they are supposed to lose to the good teams. They've already beaten Powell and Bearden.
  13. I've seen Vibbert play and that is a huge loss for Clinton. Iwas unaware that he had transferred. Wow, that really hurts them.
  14. I would have thought that this game would be a no-brainer, but the Central coach has got his guys playing really well. He really had to clean house over there as for years Central has lacked disciplined players. But they are playing well now, five wins in a row. Powell is reeling off an embarrassing loss to Oak Ridge and I expect that they will right the ship tonight and win by ten.
  15. Having said that about Humphreys, don't sleep on Bearden. When I was in school, I despised Bearden. They beat us by two points in the Regional Championship game in 94 and I still think about that game all the time. What I respect about Bearden is their discipline and fundamentals. They work very hard to win the games they should win and find ways to win some games they shouldn't. Coach Blevins is excellent. You cannot understate the importance of discipline at the high school level. Powell, though very talented this year, is suffering from a lack of discipline on their team and the results of that start to rear their heads this time of year. Powell lost to an inferior Oak Ridge team by 20 points the other night, case in point.
  16. I played college ball for four years at UTC 95-99 after playing high school ball at Powell. I know what it takes to play at the D1 level and Lee Humphreys is totally at that level. What seperates him from every other good player around Knoxville, including Kyle Cruze, is his ability to consistently get AND make his own shot. He understands the subtle nuances of the game, such as how to use his body to protect the ball and how to create space on the perimeter against tough man to man by thrusting the ball through. I've seen him play and if I was to guard him, I would try to make him go right as often as possible, he simply shoots the ball too well moving to the left. As for Higgins, I';ve spent the last three years in law school at UT and I've played a lot of pick up ball with Higgins and his brother, they are both great guys and any trash that was talked by Higgins would have been good spirited in nature. He's a pretty classy guy.
  17. I think Powell should receive some consideration. I watched them recently at Oak Ridge. Powell led the entire ball game until very very late. I know Oak Ridge is good, but Powell is a team to be reckened with. Remember the name Erin Ogan, she's 6-1, averaging about 15-16 a game, shooting almost 60% from threes.....and she's a sophomore. In two years, everybody will know about this girl at Powell.
  18. 4AAA isn't bad at all with Bearden, Farragut, Maryville, and William Blount. It's weak on the lower half though and so is 3AAA.
  19. AAA East Tennessee 1) Bearden - solid all around team 2) Bradley Central - did not look great again Oak Ridge at home 3) Science Hill - were #1, pretty shocking loss, did not see that one coming 4) Cleveland 5) Maryville 6) Powell - big game tonight at Anderson County 7) Chattanooga Central - quietly having a good year 8) McMinn County 9) Rhea County 10) Greeneville - looking forward to seeing them in Knoxville Christmas tournaments on the outside looking in... William Blount - some tough close losses, but the biggest upset so far this season Oak Ridge - showed they can play with the big boys down at Bradley Central, sporadic guard play Brainerd - lots of young talent
  20. I saw Farragut against Powell and they got demolished. Powell led by 20 going into the 4th quarter and put the JV players in and still won by ten. Farragut is not bad and maybe they just had an off night but good teams don't usually get spanked like that.
  21. Coacht, Great site. I wanted to say that I was adding games for Powell today and made a couple of mistakes that I wanted to point out: 1. Powell plays at Campbell Co. on 12/13, not 12/12. 2. Powell plays at Karns only on 1/14, not at Carter. 3. Both the Campbell Co. and Oak Ridge games on 1/28 and 1/31 are district games. 4. Powell plays at home against Clinton on 2/11 and at Bearden on 2/13. Sorry about the mistakes, I'll be mopre careful in the future about entering games.
  22. A team to watch out for in East Tennessee AAA is Powell. They are 3-1 with a tough loss against Clinton where they had some guys get banged up and miss the second half. They have had atleast a 15 point lead in the second half of every ball game they have played, and when they learn how to finish teams, Powell could very well challenge Bearden, Science Hill, Bradley Central, and DB as the best AAA teams in the state. And they just killed Halls last night leading 64-33 before call the dogs off and winning by twenty. With their schedule, Powell will likely not be challenged until 1/7/02 at Oak Ridge. By then, they should be 9-1.
  23. I've seen Suddath from McCallie and Skogen from Temple. Both of those kids can really shoot the ball. White from McCallie is a great shooter but he probably had a once in a lifetime night against Temple. He's not capable of getting his own shot. Humphreys at Maryville is a nice player but I've seen him about ten times and I'm not sure he can succeed at Florida. What sets him apart from other players in the Knoxville area though is that he needs no help to get his shot and is a nice creator. Cruze (Bearden) is a great shooter and the Spradlin kid (Powell) can shoot the ball well from three to four feet behind the three point line and he's not afraid to take the big shot.
  24. 1. Science Hill 2. Maryville 3. Rhea County 4. Bradley Central 5. Bearden 6. Oak Ridge 7. Clinton 8. DB 9. Powell 10. Greeneville Clinton was whipped by A-E, but played the game without all the football guys being in game shape. Powell should be improved due to their new sports facility which will allow Coach Ogan to spend an extra 45 minutes-hour in practice everyday without having to share gym space with the girls. Bearden may not be on this list too long, they have lost a ton of talent in Oliver and Robinson. Science Hill embarrassed Oak Ridge who was expecting to play much better. Powell at Clinton Tuesday night should be a good game.
