  5. I can't speak for JUCO softball in Tennessee but I know JUCO baseball in Tennessee is a great product. I wish more parents (and some coaches) would lose the 'JUCO Stigma'.... For a lot of kids, 2 years of actually playing instead of sitting behind a junior or a senior only gets them better. For some, the smaller venues and more intimate schools sittings are a better situation for their first time away from home. Universities in Tennessee accept JUCO Classes for transfer hours (some Universities have cooperative programs with a JUCO college). If a player is undecided on their major after high school the JUCO route is a great way to knock out some General ED hours while he or she decides - at a lot lower cost - because most softball and baseball scholarships are partial scholarships. There are some great JUCO coaches and the professors at our state JUCOs are as good as their 4-year counterparts....
  6. This week's District Series: Siegel (3-0) vs Oakland (0-0) Smyrna (0-3) vs Riverdale (0-3) Blackman (3-0) vs Stewarts Creek (3-0) http://www.riverdalewarriors.com/baseball/images/2016/standings.pdf
  7. You are welcome... Siegel's season and future look bright....
  8. Gerry, I have been involved with Riverdale since 1994. Our county does not provide any money for extra curriculars, including sports. Every year freshmen band parents, sports parents and others are surprised to hear that.
  9. First year Spring Fling was in Memphis the volunteers were overwhelmed in the parking lot and at the gate at Gagliano field when our baseball fans and student section showed up for a Tuesday morning game. A lot of schools travel well. First year Decatur Riverside baseball made it to Spring Fling at Riverdale the whole town came. Awesome crowd at those games. When Riverdale football went to Kilbourne Ohio to play we filled up their visitors stands and we had fans sitting on the home side. Their AD told me it was biggest visiting crowd they had ever had. I miss playing football at Oak Ridge. Love the tradition there with the train and everything.
  10. You obviously never went to a Riverdale at Oak Ridge football game? Ask folks how many Riverdale fans showed up for those over the years. The Warriors travel well, regardless of distance. High schools in Ohio and Kentucky can attest to that.
  11. 7-AAA District Standings and Schedule Posted Please let me know of any additions/corrections http://www.riverdalewarriors.com/baseball/images/2016/standings.pdf
  12. Every second is a coachable moment.
  13. Problem with arm care in high school could be a summer team coach or trying to air it out at a showcase for the radar gun... A lot of factors come into play. Could be all those curve balls in little League coming back to haunt...
  14. Too funny. How many high schools other than Riverdale even have an SID? The announcement was made via social media and local print media. We make an honest effort to keep our website as up to date as possible. But other things do have priority in life. Unless you were following local media or social media what would have even driven you to the website?
  15. http://tssaa.org/tssaa-enrollment-figures-for-2015-16-2016-17-classification/ Riverdale - 1724 Blackman - 1839 Oakland - 1933 Siegel - 1758 Smyrna - 1774
  16. Agreed. I was actually in a meeting about websites when announcement was made and then teaching and now at baseball practice. Look for website to be updated after I take mom to Kroger senior night. Congratulations to Coach K!
  17. http://www.riverdalewarriors.com/football/tradition/27-riverdale-college-players/54-riverdale-college-players.html 94 team had a freshman backup QB that was pretty good. The 93 team that lost to Kelly Holcomb and Lincoln Co had the hardest hitter in Riverdale history, Kenny McGowan. McGowan went on to play at UT. 97 team was undefeated and #23 in USA Today until a Halloween night at Gallatin. They recovered from that night to win 5 straight in the post-season.
  18. The Backyard Brawl is in the lead now. Let's keep voting so one of our schools win $1,000
  19. This week's "Backyard Brawl" is one of the candidates for the Titans' Game of the Week - winning coach wins their program $1,000! Game is decided by online voting: http://www.titansonline.com/fans/high-school-coach-of-the-week.html As they said in Chicago, vote often! Tell friends! See everyone Friday at Blackman....
  20. In my humble opinion, yours might vary, we are living in a different generation than 1994. I still do not understand the fixation with numbers for a high school football team. When my son played, he was one of two kickers on his team. His job was kick kickoffs into the endzone. Another kicker's job was make the extra points. That was depth. But about 30-40(?) kids standing on the sideline at MTSU on a Friday night never set foot on the field. The 5'7, 140 lb 7th string senior DB was never going to play a snap. Fast forward 20 years. Riverdale now offers rugby, ultimate frisbee, archery, and other activities that did not exist in 1994. The 5'7, 140 lb DB is now running cross-country. Kids have cell phones, video games and social media. This is a different generation of kids with a different work ethic and outlook on life. The kid that was happy just wearing a uniform 20 years ago is the kid that turns that uniform in at the first sign of adversity or lack of playing time today. I walk the halls at Riverdale every day. I can assure you there is no 6'4, 240 lb, , 4.8 forty players wandering the halls and not playing football. If other schools have 90+ dressing out, I do not know their secret. I do know that 40-50 of those 90 will probably never play a snap under the lights on a Friday night. I posted last year how Riverdale's zone has changed. I watch kids on Tuesday night's playing middle school games that would be zoned Riverdale 5 years ago and now they are not. When my son played from 94-97 playing at Eagleville was not an option. Imagine adding Eagleville's roster to Riverdale's today. That probably bumps the numbers up. But some of those kids at Eagleville are at Eagleville for the smaller school experience and/or the hope of playing on Friday's instead of sitting the bench behind someone at Riverdale. Pop Quiz! Name another school in our county where kids have an option on which school to attend???? I am now in my 21st year at Riverdale. I love the place. I love the people. I love our program. We have an amazing faculty, a great coaching staff and awesome young men and women as students. Yes, we have around 2,000 students. But those 2,000 students have far more options today than they had 20 years ago. I have the great privilege of working with all 2,000 of them, whether they play a sport or not. And if I do bump into a 6'4, 240 lb young man with zero body fat one day, I might ask him if he has ever considered playing football or baseball?
  21. Alabama High School football is 'different' than Tennessee High school football: http://highschoolsports.al.com/news/article/-6555916786341812140/alabamas-high-school-football-coaching-salaries-soar-past-120000-search-for-how-much-your-coach-makes/ "Hoover football coach Josh Niblett received a raise earlier this month from $114,471 to a state-best $125,000 per year, according to Hoover City Schools. That marked the fourth time over the last 10 months that one Alabama high-school coach’s salary leapfrogged another to become the state’s highest-paid public school coach." "Unlike Floyd and Freeman, whose compensation includes at least some monies from teaching, Winegarden’s pay scale reflects no classroom duty. Traditionally, coaches teach at least one class and it is often a football-specific course like weight training. Niblett teaches four strength training classes at Hoover, including two periods designated for non-athletes."
