  3. There are 5 divisions, 1A through 5A. Several of the 5A teams come to the McCallie Invitational: Collins Hill, McEachern, Lassiter and Parkview. I'm pretty sure Ringgold is 4A.
  4. For those with an interest, you can check out the results of the Georgia 5A State championship at: http://www.digitalzip.com/5astate/default.asp
  5. Nick Lukacs from Collins Hill (Ga.) - 13 - 5 in the finals of the Thompson Classic at Winder-Barrow High School.
  6. I guess UTC forfeited to Drew Woodward at 197 since he beat the guy 8 - 1 last time, don't know about the heavy weight.
  7. For you guys in Chattanooga, if you get a chance on Feb. 6th go out and support your local team, UTC, and pull for one of Chattanooga's own, Drew Woodward (Baylor 2002). He should be in the line up for Carson-Newman at either 184 or 197. He has taken some lumps in his freshamn year there but has remained dedicated and kept a positive attitude.
  8. Another tough dude that comes to mind is Pat Murphy, from Hixson '79, met Ellis Gardner in the heavyweight state finals. I think Pat had a little pay back in mind for Gardner going after his knee earlier in the season on the day he got the cast off. If I remember correctly the match was 14 to 2 and the 2 points came from Murphy picking Gardner up over his head and throwing him to the mat. After the referee said one more time and you˜re disqualified, Murphy pinned him. Murphy also had some tough guy matches with Johnny Bradford (Central) and Russ Arthur (Red Bank) earlier in his career.
  9. I would think Matt Provenzano from Baylor should be included.
  10. I may be mistaken, but I thought Jordan pinned him last year too. Maybe in the McCallie Tournament. They are both outstanding wrestlers.
  11. I think he was 6th as an 8th grader, 1st in 9th grade, and 1st last year as a 10th grader. He's a junior now.
  12. 1moretime....yup....his dad wasn't happy that his son didn't get match at the Cleveland Duals with someone from Bradley. Collins Hill wrestled a JV kid at 160 against Bradley so there wouldn't be a forfeit. I'm from Hixson, but live down here now (Collins Hill area) and I know both father and son Luckas and they're good people. Nick is probably the best 135 in Georgia this year. Be interesting to see what happens next year at the Cleveland Duals.......Nick is a junior. Maybe I'll tell dad to stay home! Sorry didn't mean to be negative....if you'll read my post after the McCallie Inv. I thought John should have won best wrestler of that tournament. [Edited by RMC on 1-15-03 7:32P]
  13. He got torn up down in the Winder-Barrow tournament by Nick Lukacs from Collins Hill 13 - 5.
  14. Is it too late for you to get into the tournament at Pope High school that weekend?
  15. Anybody notice the name of the 140 pound champion????

    James vs. Leen

It's in Winder Georgia, north east of Atlanta. Good tournament, teams from Wisconsin, Penn., Florida, South Carolina and Georgia in a 19 team field. The team from Florida awsome; their 119 pounder, Jason Robbins, was head and shoulders the best in the tournament. He beat Parker 4 - 0 in the finals. Evidently he is the real deal, from what I heard he is in the middle of his 3rd undefeated season and a 2-time state Champion. [Edited by RMC on 12-30-02 11:16A]
  17. Soddy came in 5th in the Winder-Barrow Inv. First was Collins Hill, Oviedo (Florida), Norristown(Penn.) Custer (Wisc.),and Soddy. Nick Lukacs(Collins Hill) was named Outstanding Wrestler after beating John Lane of Soddy Daisy 13 - 5 in the finals

    James vs. Leen

Just wanted to update this thread, Parker (Collins Hill) beat James this weekend at the Winder-Barrow Inv. this weekend.

    James vs. Leen

I'm pretty familiar with all four kids you're talking about here. The Parker kid from Collins is a very good wrestler and been tough for everyone. Last year he lost in the McCallie Inv. to James in double overtime, he also lost last year to Cordell in double overtime. This year he beat Cordell in overtime and should have been awarded the take down against James. I think James and Cordell are very close, both have very defensive styles. The one thing I did notice, and you might want to pass on to James, he didn't shoot or do anything offensive from his feet in the semi-finals or finals. If he'll pull the trigger and be more offensive from his feet, on these top ranked kids, he could be special. If I'm not mistaken, James and Parker (Collins Hill) get another shot at each other very soon. [Edited by RMC on 12-24-02 8:51A]
  20. I thought the 103 match was a pretty good one too, Knapp - Prater, with Prater winning 10 - 7. I thought maybe too that John Lane might have been deserving of the Outstanding Wrestler.
  21. Simpson got it last year.
  22. We (Collins Hill) have 103 pounder that will be at the McCallie tournament that may give Dunning a run for his money. The kid is only a 9th grader, but he pinned Coleman last Saturday.
  23. Drew Woodward (Baylor) is at Carson Newman.....at 184. He is my nephew.
  24. I'm not sure if it was a "limit" or not. I went to school with Pat and had Junior High and High School that were housed at two different locations. Prior to Pat Murphy we had another pretty good wrestler in Tom Popp. Actually we had a string of pretty good wrestlers: Stan Walden, Randy Batten, Dean Smith, Marvin Walden, and Steve Griffith. Batten, Smith, and Murphy all had good careers at UTC.
  25. Thanks, should be fun. I couldn't enjoy it last year with a nephew in the finals at 189 for Baylor. Too stressful, but no relatives wrestling in it this year so I can sit back and enjoy!
