  1. ouch. not much good news in that story, especially the part about swafford. hope she's ok. i didn't notice friday night, do they only have 11 players on the team? did that forfeit put them out of the tournament? [Edited by mikemcgee on 6/2/02 6:11P]
  2. Don't really know. I do know there were about 20 18-U teams in addition to seven 18-gold teams. All i got to see was a few games Friday night.
  3. Hey Indian, I started to try to search you out Friday night, but couldn't quite get up to asking people if they were "indian" or if they knew "indian." Decided it would be too much hastle having to explain over and over to random people what the heck I was talking about...lol
  4. Do you know how the Parker Eagles have been doing at the tournament? I saw them Friday night but haven't been able to find out anything about any game since then. [Edited by mikemcgee on 6/2/02 1:01P]

    NO SHOW UMPS!

And that, by golly, is a mouth full. Well said. I did notice there appear to be far fewer teams this year than in most years past. I went down Friday night to Montegue for the 18-A, 18-Gold games. Things went smoothly as far as I could tell. There are seven gold teams and 20 "A" teams, I believe. There doesn't seem to be an 18 "B" division. I don't know. Maybe that's not unusual. Maybe that's just not a popular division. But, it's the younger ages where the dropoff is occuring, and that could spell big trouble for an organization. I noticed there were only three teams in 16-B, which means there are a total of three teams playing "B" ball in the two older divisions. Are the "B" teams starting to disappear from summer ball? That's a question, not a statement. I hope that doesn't happen. That will mean a lot of kids get left out if they can't hook up with one of the more elite teams. By the way, ERA, saw some great performances Friday night. Remember the Currie girl from Pisgah, Ala. that we've been seeing at Border Battle and Bob Jones for the last couple of years? She's a big kid with enormous talent on the mound. Saw her with Huntsville Storm Friday night. She out-battled Jennifer Wright of Ezell and U fo Ala., though both did a great job. Wright was obviously not quite at the very top of her game. Currie also hit a two-run homer for the only runs of the game. Meek finished up and look sharp for the Parker Eagles. They have Wright, Meek, Kelly Swafford and Megan Elliott of East Ridge pitching for them. I think maybe they'll be OK in the long run, don't you? How would you like to have a team that could afford to start a game with Swafford and Elliott in the outfield and Meek on the bench? Sheezz. Seems every team I saw from Georgia had some girl throwing smoke except the Phoenix, which didn't have it's regular pitcher on hand. They still won with an outfielder pitching the game I saw. Frost Falcons were missing one of their pitchers, but I saw a lefty from Soddy Daisy who doesn't even pitch for Soddy. I think she would have been an elite pitcher in our District 8-AAA along with Childress, Jenson and Catalano. Finally got to see the young girl from Hendersonville, Heather (I have a mental block on her last name) pitch for a team from Columbia. What a curve ball. She was wearing a full mask on the mound. I was told she was knocked cold by a hit ball at some point during the season. She seemed to have no fear on the mound, though. Also saw the Nighthawks win in the last game of the night. Herdersonville's Kristen Lucas, a Motlow signee, had a great game with two or three hits and several RBI. Overall, I came away very impressed with the Georgia teams. Big, strong and athletic from top to bottom. I also want to get a look at the Eagles after they've been together for a bit and the pitchers get sharpened up. I still like the Eagles' chances of winning it with their pitching depth. East Cobb out of Atlanta looked super and had a great pitcher, and the Storm with Currie on the mound are as tough as anybody. Unfortunately, it has proven impossible to get any news of the tournament. Even the News-Free Press hasn't had any game coverage. They've had one feature story on a particular team Saturday and Sunday, but no game coverage.
  6. the all-state selection is coordinated by the state's sports writer's association. it is not affiliated with any particular paper. the all mid-state list you'll see in the tennessean is that particular paper's picks based on whatever criteria it chooses to use. hope this helps.
  7. Thanks. I'm hoping to see Spear pitch tonight in Chattanooga. I think they face the Georgia Phoenix at about 8:30 CST.
  8. the only one i know of is by newspaper writers. it seems to always come out very late.
  9. Just out of curiousity, who was the ace of the staff--Steen or Brittany Spear? I'm not asking you to say who you think was better (wouldn't want to put you on that spot) but who did the coach use as his ace or did they just alternate games? I know both pitched in the tournament and both had good years.
  10. Thank you very much. i'm pretty sure Frost Falcons play at 5:30 at Montague and I want to see them also. Worked out just right. Do you know what time the first game of the tournament is by any chance. Might slip down early and see some more games if possible.
  11. I already gave my opinion. Sara Meek. By the way, Funman, can you tell me when and where her Parker Eagle team plays Friday at the Snider-Oliver tournament? [Edited by mikemcgee on 5/30/02 8:24P]
  12. Ooltewah catcher Crystal Rice has signed to play at Motlow State next season. Crystal hit .429, had six homers and drove in 26 runs her senior year.
  13. Does anyone know when and where the Eagles play Friday in the Snider-Oliver?
  14. If anyone has the pool game schedules for the Georgia Phoenix, the Eagles or the Falcons for this weekend's Snider-Oliver tournament, I'd appreciate the information. I'm particularly interested in Friday but would also like to have Saturday's pool games.
  15. LOL!!!! You folks don't serve that in the concession stand down at Goodpasture do you? No wonder your home record is so good. I thought it was great talent and coaching, but turns out you've been killing off the competition with vittles.
  16. Check out the carp at the bottom of this page. That's Don Berry, former webmaster of the Tullahoma Wildcat baseball page. This is his personal family page for the grandparents back in Ohio. (Don is the one seated...the fish is the one on the table). http://webpages.charter.net/berry/
  17. Dang, Del, you still haven't caught that fish?
  18. I think Sara might well be the best player in the state. I say that, of course, not having seen them all, but it is hard to imagine anyone who does a better job against the level of competition she has faced both on the mound and at the plate. If you let me choose any high school player in the state to start a team with tomorrow, I'd choose Sara. I think she'll do well at UT-C, which in my opinon is the best college program in the state.
  19. Does anyone know if there will be a Snider-Oliver schedule posted online anywhere? I realize it would be a huge undertaking but thought maybe they were doing it somewhere. I'm particularly interested in 18-u, both A and B as well as Gold.
  20. don't know if you mean boys or girls or which of the three divisions. this link will take you to the page that leads to all the results. http://tssaa.org/2001Champions/StateTrack/home.htm
  21. It has been previously reported here that Hendersonville third baseman Kristen Lucas would sign with Motlow State and she did just that this morning. Congratulations to Kristen and to Lady Buck coach Gary Barfield. She's a good one.
