Unicoi County beat Happy Valley and Happy Valley beat Hampton making the rankings tough for the first time all season. District tournaments are just about two weeks away. 1. Elizabethton- (AA) (19-0)- Beat a solid Happy Valley team by 30, whipped Sullivan North by 70, and crunched Unicoi County by 37 in the Devil's Den. Coach Dugger's Lady Cyclones have now won a Tri-Cities' record 39 straight games. They are averaging a state leading 69.4 points per game and only allowing 35.8, for an average winning margin of 33.6 points a game. They visit Sullivan East on Tuesday and host Daniel Boone on Friday night for Homecoming. 2. Happy Valley- (AA) (13-7)- Lost to Elizabethton by 30 and to Unicoi Co. by 7. Beat Hampton by 16. The Lady Warriors hold this spot by virtue of owning two wins over Hampton and a season split with Unicoi County. This team has a great chance to reach 20 wins and should be a tough draw for District 2 teams in the Regional tournament. They host Johnson County Tuesday, Unaka Thursday, and visit Sullivan South Friday. 3. Hampton- (A) (10-9)- Had a huge 16 point win at #2 ranked South Greene. Beat rival Cloudland by 12 and then had a disappointing loss to Happy Valley by 16. The Lady Dogs hold this spot by virtue of a head-to-head win over Unicoi County. They visit Unaka Tuesday and University High Friday. 4. Unicoi Co.- (AA) (11-10)- Beat North by 44 and avenged an early season loss by beating Happy Valley by 7. Were smoked at home by Elizabethton 73-36. The Lady Devils host Sullivan east in a big game Friday. Congratulations to Destinie Hayes for grabbing career rebound # 1,000! 5. Cloudland- (A) (6-10)- I assume that they beat Johnson County and then lost to Hampton by 12. The Lady Landers visit Avery County, NC on Friday. 6. Unaka- (A) (4-14)- Lost by 6 to North Greene and by 17 to Cosby. Coach Chambers and the Lady Rangers have a tough week upcoming. They Host county rival Hampton Tuesday and visit rival Happy Valley Thursday for a double dose of Carter County fun. 7. Johnson Co.- (AA) (1-13)- Lost to Sullivan East by 42 and I assume they lost to Cloudland. The Lady Longhorns are having a tough year. It gets no easier as they visit Happy Valley Tuesday.

Happy Valley was in it for a quarter and a half. I think they led 24-23 mid-way through the second quarter. Elizabethton then outscored them 45-14 the rest of the way to win 68-38.

There are no changes this week, though Cloudland nearly shook things way up in losing in OT to Happy Valley. 1. Elizabethton- (AA) (16-0)- Beat a pretty good Hampton team by 35, Johnson County by 58, and Sullivan South by 44. Host Happy Valley Tuesday, visit Sullivan North Friday, and visit Unicoi County Saturday. Kelci Marosites joined sister Kayla as a 1,000 point scorer on a three ball against South. Not surprisingly, sister Kayla assisted on the shot. This team is relentless. 2. Happy Valley- (AA) (12-5)- Suffered a very disappointing 21 point league loss to Sullivan East. Beat University High by 32, and escaped with an overtime win by 5 over Cloudland. Jenna Eaton hit a half court buzzer beater to get the game into overtime. We will see what Happy Valley is made of this week. They are at Elizabethton Tuesday and host Unicoi County Friday and Hampton Saturday for a very tough week. 3. Hampton- (A) (8-8)- Lost to Elizabethton by 35 and to North Greene by 3. The Lady Dogs have a tough week upcoming. They are at South Greene Tuesday, host Cloudland Friday, and visit Happy Valley Saturday. Do not let the 8-8 record deceive you. This is a good single A team that could reach Murfreesboro. 4. Unicoi Co.- (AA) (9-9)- Beat South by 3 and Johnson County by 39 to even their record at 9-9. Host North Monday and then visit Happy Valley Friday and host Elizabethton Saturday for two huge games. 5. Cloudland- (A) (5-9)- Beat Unaka. Someone please post that score. Also beat U-H by 22 and then lost a heartbreaker to Happy Valley by 5 in overtime. Visit Johnson County Tuesday and Hampton Friday. They are improving. 6. Unaka- (A) (4-12)- Lost to Cloudland and to South Greene by 31. Have a tough week coming up. They are at North Greene Tuesday and host Cosby Friday. 7. Johnson Co.- (AA) (1-11)- Lost to Elizabethton by 58 and Unicoi Co. by 39. Host Cloudland Tuesday.

District 1 has South Greene, North Greene, Hampton, Cloudland, Unaka, and University High. South Greene won several state titles as a AA school and is very good this year. North Greene has made several recent state appearances and lost in overtime to Wayne County for the championship a few years back. Hampton and Cloudland have proud traditions and multiple state tournament appearances. Unaka has also had some past success. University High has the least post-season history in the group. South Greene, North Greene, and Hampton all have Murfreesboro aspirations this year. Cloudland, Unaka, and University High are rebuilding. These East Tennessee mountain teams are all tough and well coached.

I heard that 4 or 5 of Johnson County's younger players may have left the program. I do not know if it is true, and if so, why.

The Lady Cyclones beat Hampton 65-30 last night. Why did Tatum Street not play for Hampton? I also noticed Alexis Bowers is back for Hampton.

I will give a full report this week. I got to watch the Lady Cyclones win their division in the South Carolina tournament. They are playing at a very high level right now. 1. Elizabethton- (AA) (13-0)- Beat previously undefeated North Forsyth, GA by 20 and then beat Hoover Alabama by 26 in the championship game. Host Hampton Monday, visit Johnson County Tuesday, and host South Friday. This team is on a mission. One game at a time. 2. Happy Valley- (AA) (11-4)- No scores posted over the break. Host Sullivan East Tuesday in an important league game. Visit University High Thursday and host Cloudland Saturday. 3. Hampton- (A) (8-6)- Beat Sequoyah by 3, lost by 11 to Morristown East and beat University high by 14. At Elizabethton Monday and visit N. Greene Friday in a big league game. 4. Unicoi Co.- (AA) (7-9)- Lost to Daniel Boone by 3 and then beat Cloudland by 20 and Madison, NC by 5. Visit South Tuesday and Johnson County Friday. They can even their record at 9-9 with two wins. 5. Cloudland- (A) (3-8)- Lost to Dobyns-Bennett by 28, Unicoi County by 20, and N. Greene by 6. Host Unaka Tuesday in a battle to hold their 5 spot. Host University High Friday. This team needs a win. 6. Unaka- (A) (4-10)- Beat Cherokee by 29. Can move up a spot by beating Cloudland Tuesday. Visit S. Greene Friday for a tough game. 7. Johnson Co.- (AA) (1-9)- Lost to Cherokee by 18. Visit Elizabethton Tuesday and Unicoi County Friday for a very tough week.

The Lady Cyclones 20 point win over a previously undefeated 6A North Forsyth Georgia team was a high quality win.

Elizabethton has 9 players that play in every game. The four post are 6'2", 6'1", 5'11", and 5'10". The three wings are 5"10", 5'10", and 5'7". The two points guards are both about 5'7". The team has good overall height, some muscle, leaping ability, and lots of length. Two players block shots like boys and the team gets lots of steals and deflections. The current five starters are 6'1", 5'11", 5'10", 5'10", and 5'7".

I believe that Fulton's outstanding point guard Quay Hines, who was a freshmen last year, transferred to Gatlinburg-Pittman.

I will take a shot at it. 1. South Greene- (13-1) (District 1-A)- The Lady Rebels are back. They had great success in Class AA in the past and are averaging 74 points a game in building a 13-1 record. They have quality wins over Hampton (A), Chuckey-Doak (AA), Grainger County (AA), and Morristown East (AAA). The win over East avenged their only loss. They should get some tough competition in the Landair Holiday Classic in Greeneville. 2. Gibson Co.- (16-1) (District 14-A)- This team also had great success in AA just a few years back. Their lone loss is to Graves County Kentucky. I do not know much about most of their opponents, but the wins over Westview and Obion County may be quality wins. 3. Pickett Co.- (9-3) (District 7-A)- Losses are to White County (AAA), Livingston Academy (AA), and Community (A). Those are three good teams. Pickett is averaging 65 points a game and have quality wins over Jackson County, Clarkrange, and Livingston Academy. 4. Clarkrange- (11-3) (District 7-A)- The Lady Buffaloes are tradition rich and have played a tough schedule. The losses are to White County (AAA), Pickett County (A), and Hamilton Heights. They have nice wins over Cumberland County (AAA), Livingston Academy (AA), Walker Valley (AAA), and Hamilton Heights. 5. Middleton- (12-0) (District 15-A)- Averaging 63.3 points a game. I am not familiar with many of their opponents. 6. Harriman- (12-1) (3-A)- Holding opponents to only 30 points a game. Lone loss was to Oliver Springs. They avenged that loss and beat Oliver Springs and have one other nice win over Tellico Plains. 7. Oliver Springs- (11-4) (District 4-A)- It appears OZ is back! Four losses are to Tellico Plains (A), William Blount (AAA), Knox Webb, and Harriman (A). Have beaten Jackson County twice, Harriman, and Grace Christian. 8. Houston Co.- (14-0) (District 10-A)- Holding opponents to 31 points a game. I do not know much about this team. They have nice wins over Perry Co., Forrest, and Ezell Harding. 9. Community- (10-5) (District 9-A)- The five losses are to JPII, Warren Co., Murfreesboro Central Magnet, Giles Co., and Smyrna. They have wins over JPII, Forrest, and Pickett Co. That is a very tough schedule. I suspect this team may be a factor in the post season. 10. Jackson Co.- (8-3) (7-A)- Have lost twice to OZ and to Pickett Co. No great wins yet. The tradition is rich and they can never be taken lightly. Others on the radar: Perry County, North Greene, Hampton, Cosby, Tellico Plains, Van Buren Co., Watertown, Forrest, West Carroll, and Decatur County Riverside. Unaka has moved ahead of Johnson County. I hope everyone has a great Christmas with your families and friends. Most of our teams will be involved in Christmas Tournaments, so everyone go out and have fun supporting your teams. 1. Elizabethton- (AA) (10-0)- Beat a decent Sullivan East team 74-38. Will be in a holiday tournament in South Carolina after Christmas. I do not know the current injury status of Emily Kiser and Kyra McCrary. 2. Happy Valley- (AA) (10-4)- Lost to Walker Valley by 19 and beat the Chattanooga Patriots by 48. Who are the Patriots? They may have lost another game in that tournament, but the opponent is not posted. Host Unaka Monday. 3. Hampton- (A) (5-4)- Lost to South Greene by 12 and beat Chuckey-Doak by 8. The Lady Dogs are at Johnson County Monday and will play in the Boone Christmas Tournament. Is Kim Swearingen hurt? 4. Unicoi Co.- (AA) (3-8)- No games posted last week. Will be in the Boone holiday tournament. 5. Cloudland- (A) (2-5)- Lost by 6 to Happy Valley and then by 49 to South Greene. Wow. Is South Greene that much better than Happy Valley? Will be in the Boone tournament. 6. Unaka- (A) (3-8)- Avenged an earlier loss to Johnson County, winning by 20 to take this spot. Lost to Cosby by 13 and then beat Tri-Cities Christian by 48. The Lady Rangers are improving and visit Happy Valley Monday before playing in the Boone holiday tournament. 7. Johnson Co.- (AA) (1-6)- The Lady Longhorns lost to Unaka by 20 to return to the seven spot. Host a good Hampton team Monday.

Still no changes in the rankings. 1. Elizabethton- (AA) (9-0)- Had an 18 point win over Hampton, beat Knox Farragut by 13, and Cumberland County by 21. Coach Dugger returns after sitting out a two game suspension to lead the Lady Cyclones against Sullivan East Monday. 2. Happy Valley- (AA) (8-2)- Beat South by 16. Should be a contender all season. 3. Hampton- (A) (4-3)- Lost to Elizabethton by 18 and beat Unicoi County 58-54 in overtime. Host South Greene Tuesday and Chuckey-Doak Thursday for two tough challenges. This is a good team. 4. Unicoi County- (AA) (3-8)- Lost to Sullivan East by 10, beat Cloudland by 9, and lost to Hampton by 4. Still not clicking on all cylinders. 5. Cloudland- (A) (2-3)- Lost to Unicoi County by 9. Visit South Greene for a tough one on Friday. 6. Johnson County- (AA) (1-5)- Lost to Sullivan North by 17. May not be able to hold off Unaka long for this spot. 7. Unaka- (A) (1-7)- Beat University High by 14. Lost to North Greene by 6. Play Cosby and Tri-Cities Christian in a weekend tournament. Getting better.

Coach Dugger sat out both games. The assistant coaches did a nice job in wins over Knox Farragut and Cumberland County. Coach Dugger will be back Monday to coach a big league game against Sullivan East.

Elizabethton- (AA) (6-0)- Beat North by 66 and Happy Valley by 15. The Lady Cyclones are rounding into form, but were tested by Happy Valley. They visit Hampton Tuesday and play two AAA teams in Knox Farragut and Cumberland County at Science Hill this weekend. 2. Happy Valley- (AA) (7-2)- Got a nice win at Unicoi County by 7, lost to Elizabethton by 15, and beat Hampton by 4. Coach Abel has a nice team. No games posted this week. 3. Hampton- (A) (3-1)- Lost to Happy Valley by 4. If they have played any more games, I have not seen them posted. 4. Unicoi County- (AA) (2-6)- Lost to Happy Valley by 7and beat North by 43. Visit East Tuesday, host Cloudland Thursday, and host Hampton Saturday for a tough week. 5. Cloudland- (A) (2-2)- Beat Johnson County by 20. I have not seen all their results. At Unicoi County Thursday. 6. Johnson County- (AA) (1-4)- Lost to Cloudland by 20 and East by 37. All their results are not posted. 7. Unaka- (A) (0-5)- Lost to Grainger by 19. Nice road win for Happy Valley at Unicoi County. Tomorrow's game with Elizabethton should be interesting.

I saw some more of our teams in the Thanksgiving Classic at Happy Valley. I think things will shake out in our rankings as many of our teams play each other before Christmas. 1. Elizabethton- (AA) (4-0)- Beat Cherokee by 55 and beat a good Greeneville team by 8. The Lady Cyclones are still working on different combinations of their top 9 players. Host North Tuesday and visit Happy Valley for an interesting game on Friday. 2. Happy Valley- (AA) (5-1)- Beat Central by 13, Crockett by 13, and Boone by 6 in their own Thanksgiving tournament. The Lady Warriors look pretty good and we will see how good as they visit Unicoi County on Tuesday and host Elizabethton on Friday. 3. Hampton- (A) (3-0)- Beat South by 12 and Cherokee by 19. Swearingen and Grubbs look solid, though I am not sure either is a true point guard. I think Tatum Street is very talented, though she was in foul trouble in the South game. The two six footers have potential with some development. The freshman Tuelle also shows promise. This could be a dangerous single A team come tournament time. 4. Unicoi Co.- (AA) (1-5)- Lost to Oliver Springs by 1 and Oneida by 16. The Lady Devils are off to a rough start. A chance for a big win at home against Happy Valley on Tuesday might turn things around. 5. Cloudland- (A) (1-2)- Beat South by 15 and Lost to Crockett by 3. Coach Birchfield's team may be a bit inconsistent until the younger players get some experience. Somebody please post their schedule. 6. Johnson Co.- (AA) (1-2)- No games posted. 7. Unaka- (A) (0-4)- Only lost to North Greene by 4 and then lost to South Greene by 26. The Lady Rangers appear competitive. Beating Grainger on Tuesday will be a tall order, even at home.

All our teams have a few games under their belts. I have made a couple of changes to the rankings. 1. Elizabethton- (AA) (2-0)- Beat Pigeon Forge by 28 and Science Hill by 15. Stating the obvious, but this is a very good basketball team. Keeping them focused, happy, healthy, and hungry without peaking too early may be the challenge. Play in the Happy Valley Thanksgiving Tournament this week. 2. Happy Valley- (AA) (2-1)- Beat West Greene and Sullivan North. Lost to Grainger. The Lady Warriors may be pretty good. They are hosting their annual Thanksgiving Tournament this week. 3. Unicoi Co.- (AA) (1-3)- Lost to Science Hill by 27, Cocke Co. by 6, and Madison, NC by 10. The Lady Devils beat Crockett by 13. Not a great start, but they will be a factor. 4. Hampton- (A) (1-0)- Beat Crockett by 1. Coach Hazelwood's team is a bit of a mystery to me. I know they have Alexus Grubbs and Kim Swearingen, but do not know much else. Can the Bulldog faithful tell us about this team? 5. Cloudland- (A) (0-1)- Coach Matt Birchfield's Lady Landers lost to Sullivan East by 28. Kendall Mull and Faith Russell are two good players. What else does Cloudland have? 6. Johnson County- (AA) (1-2)- Lost to South Greene by 51 and Mitchell Co., NC by 1. Beat Unaka by 10 to move up a spot. 7. Unaka- (A) (0-2)- Lost to Cosby by 16 and Johnson County by 10. Coach Kenneth Chambers has returned to Stoney Creek after a few years at Cloudland as an assistant. It may take some rebuilding, but I look to see the Lady Rangers improving as the season moves along.

Elizabethton beat Science Hill 68-53 tonight. The Lady Cyclones jumped out to a quick 20-8 lead on some hot shooting by Melenda Perry. Science Hill battled back to take a 29-28 lead. The Cyclones started pressing in the second half and Megan Pietrowski had a good third quarter scoring in the paint. Kayla Marosites got hot in the 4th to seal the win. The team is still a little rusty and Science Hill played pretty well, but it is still a solid win.
