SALTY'S STUMPER If DCA wins the A gold ball this year, which I expect, they will become only the 3rd private school in any classification (except Division II) to win a state championship in girls basketball. 85Warrior is correct except for omitting Robert Newman, who later moved to Hamilton, as the Melrose coach. Stella "boom boom" Cannon had 40 in the final game I believe.

Can someone who knows Coach Shelton,or maybe plays him on a regular basis, tell me about his strengths as a coach. His teams always seem to be strong and appear to improve as the season progresses. I must admit, and apologize, after seeing his team play many years ago, I thought he was a clown. All the sideline antics, shirttail out, no kids on foul line, etc. I have since seen the error of my thinking. In fact, his team seemed to be the opposite of him. Poised, controlled, unemotional. I was impressed. Please don't turn this into a bashfest of him. Offense, defense, discipline, talent? What is the deal? How does he do it? This is a serious question. Need serious answers.

Looks like LC and Shelbyville are on a collision course to play each other in district semis. Winner to be opposite Columbia. Loser to be paired with them in region. The question is: Who is better? Columbia or Oakland? Who would these teams (LC and SCHS) rather play in an elimination game? Not sure I know that answer.

Big Wahoo to Bigchief. He gettum correct answer. At least I think so. In 1973, there were large (L) and small (S) classifications instead of A, AA, and AAA. I assume the (S) game was played first. If true, Gainesboro (Jackson County now) beat Woodbury (Cannon County now) 43-30 to complete a 36-0 season. For several years the tournament had been held in Jackson. Joe Halfacre was the winning coach and Robert A. Harris coached Woodbury. Two legends. And finally BC, one bit of advice, if I'm your hero, you might want to bring something to read and a sack lunch......... The line is pretty long.

Out of 474 contestants, Magic Flame comes closest to the correct answer and wins the Salty Dog Biscuit for the day. All of these schools/communities, had successful girls' coaches that they fired or ran off. None have got back to their previous level of success, when the former coaches were there.
