  1. So who's your pick for coach of the yr in 7A Devil? Let me guess....
  2. No comments from anyone? If the score is correct on the board, good job coach Pile and the boys! Where's Devil?
  3. Thats great coming from a guy who has a signature pic as yours!!! I love it... Looks like your mouth runs wild before YOUR pea size brain can stop it.
  4. Any word on where he will attend college?
  5. Not sure... I enjoy giving info and hope it does help parents with questions about injuries. But it does seem some are searching for the Holy Grail of injury prevention. There are thousands(yes thousands) of opinions and many are correct. Yes many, there isn't just one thing to end all injuries. Seems that is what you are expressing yourself ghost. You expressed my words better than I could I guess. All in all this thread was created with good intentions, just got a little repetitive.
  6. I had to laugh at this one a little bit P!! I could be totally wrong but I have never heard of such. If someone has heard of this or situation similar, please fill us in. Could it be that the doc was searching for a cause and had nothing else to go on? Could the girls have told about running on the beach so the simple answer was "yes, the transfer from sand to court too quickly is the cause"? I would lean toward no, again could be totally missinformed... But if this were true, would there not be a pandemic of shin plints/stress fx's in the state of Florida for high school basketball? Question #1- Was this an orthopaedic physician or family doc?
  7. Yes, I know the ends and outs of the family's ins. being the primary, school being sec. but what I'm not sure about is the event that an athlete is not covered thru the family and also doesn't pick up the school policy... My understanding is "no insur., no play". Any info Sofine? And for the $7000, yes the physician part is considerably less but I was thinking of the total package- diagnostics, anesthesia, pt, bracing?, etc. All combined does add up to a substantual amount. Something unpleasant to come out-of-pocket...
  8. They don't return starters, they just transfer in from other counties or get a change of address!!!!
  9. Cyclone is right.. You don't have to get it repaired if you want to give up sports. The knee is just too unstable to play sports without the ACL. There was an NFL player who was found not to have an ACL in one knee but never experienced problems in hs or college football, just a freak of nature.... They concluded that he was just born without or torn at a very early age. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but according to the TSSAA if an athlete does not have medical insurance thru mom or dad then school insurance must be purchased in order for them to be eligable to play... And $7000 wouldn't touch most ACL surgeries!!!!!
  10. Why were some games cancelled? Do you know schedule for rest of tourny? Thanks in advance....
  11. Thought this game was supposed to have been played yesterday.. Any info or updated bracket? Thanks....
  12. Thought it started on 28th. Where do you go on the link? Thanks..
  13. Sofine is right about the non-contact acl injuries.... I can't think of one torn acl (that I have witnessed) in female bask. that was from contact. I don't have any numbers from research articles or tests but IMO would think that at least 75% of female bask. player acl injuries are non-contact.. What do you think Sofine? And as Sofine has said above, we discussed fatigue and year round play in previous posts and yes, no down time is a factor.... Good luck to the athlete who had surgery, hope she does well...
  14. Yes, but what kind of DR. will you take her too? Nothing against general practice but sometimes they just don't know to look at the feet or what to look for. Check in to a good orthopeadic surgeon who practices sports medicine or who may be a team physician for local college.. Just some tips!
  15. Smallie, You are entitled to your opinion. And I do agree with you to a certain degree that if you have had no prior ankle problems then taping or bracing is usually not a must. But taping and/or bracing someone who routinely rolls their ankles can drastically reduce the degree of the sprain and also decrease rehab time.. On the topic of two pairs of socks... Yes two pair can reduce friction, reduce blisters but what does it do for sprain? You make it sound as if it cuts down on the accurance of ankle sprains and thats just not the case... The Q-angle factor is something that you(Smallie) really need to learn more about before making some allegations. PHargis, if you refer to the injury thread, I mentioned Q-angle being a factor-causing agent for ACL tears. Studies back this argument up but its usually not a lone cause, other factors are thought to combine as the cause.... Q-angle is the angle formed by the pull of the quadriceps muscle on the patella and the patellar tendon's insertion on the tibia. This anlge is a measurement from the top of the hip(ASIS) to midpoint of the patella(kneecap) then to the tibial tuberosity(little knot that usually forms 3-4 inches below knee). The angle between these two lines are then measured to give the Q-angle. Above 13 degrees in males and 18 degrees in females presents a +Q-angle. You are asking how to solve Q-angle. There is no solving Q-angle. It is what it is. Females Q-angles are greater due to wider hips for childbirth. Yes the stresses on the knee can be changed with proper shoes, orthotics, increased quad strenth but the angle will stay closely the same... Thats why it is thought to be a factor in ACL injuries.
  16. I would say that 7A has two of the three best coaches in the state in Lamar Rogers and Jim Brown. The third left Shelbyville last year for MTSU!!!
  17. IMO, if an athlete has good arches, doesn't pronate, supinate or role the shoe over and wear out the outer edge of sole then arches aren't necessary. Arches are most commonly prescribed if the athlete is flat-footed, overly pronates or supinates. Arches are poled in the heel(slanted inward or outward) to correct this pronation or supination to correctly line up the forces generated from heel strike-to-toeoff-thru the ankle then thru the knee..... If the athlete has a normal gait(walking pattern) and none of the above are present then adding insoles will not decrease the chances of a knee injury. You can't just throw in some custom insoles if your not already experiencing problems and think "well this will help me". As for a certain age to look at getting insoles(again only if your Dr., PT,or ATC thinks they are needed). I've seen a few girls that were 7th or 8th graders who could benefit from them. These girls were of course very active, all presented positive signs of patellafemoral syn., arch problems, and/or weak quads..... JMO, Sofine may have more info or different opinion.... Who is to say what age may be too young too benefit.....
  18. Being flat footed can play a major role in knee problems especially patellafemoral syndrome and subluxing knee caps. Weak quads are also to blame. Insoles are great.... Glad she's on the right track......
  19. Oh Yes! The mighty ER.... For everyone else out there, Don't get me wrong!! During life threatning emergencies its great-(ie, head trama, heart problems). As I'm sure you have, I've seen parents bound and determined to go to the ER to find an answer(for most orthopaedic injuries that is). All they really find is a 3-4 hr wait, xray, cast or brace, told they need to see an othopaedic dr, and get a bill for $300-$400. Unless they don't have---------------, well I won't go there! When I'm sure you(sofine) had evaluated the injury, recommended refferal to ortho and offered to call and set up app. yourself, splinted the injured limb, and instructed proper home therapy(ie, ice, elevation, anti-inflammatory, exer.) all for the one time low fee of $0. Whats the difference? Trainers usually have nailed what the injury is while the ER doc has no idea how to perform the specified ligament test to diagnose the injury... Oh, and the $300 dollars, I'll take $5 to get something to eat on the way home and we'll call it even. We try to save parents precious time and money.. Most times the Athletic Trainers credentials just aren't respected...
  20. Great sites sofine!! Thank You PHargis!!!!!!
  21. Bravo Sofine!!!! You nailed it! If I had a buck for everytime this happened I could retire. I just love when you know an athlete has an orthopaedic injury but instead of trusting your opinion the typical response is "we'll just take them to see their pediatrician"!!!!!!
