  1. There was a deadball foul on the run out of bounds. Regardless of what the clock shows, the game is not over until the penalty is resolved. I have intentionally avoided viewing the video, and will offer no opinion on the call. I know Ricky, like and respect him, and hold him in high regard. The official may or may not have handled the situation appropriately; again, I have no comment on that issue. But to suggest that three "0's" on the scoreboard means the game is over and the official no longer has jurisdiction is incorrect.
  2. You're causing me to have painful flashbacks.
  3. The referee has jurisdiction until the game ends. Since there was a flag on the final play of the game (albeit a dead ball foul), the game would continue until the penalty situation was resolved. Beyond that, an official can file an "Unusual Incident Report" on any situation he is aware of, even if the game is over.
  4. You're probably correct...googling something like that from so long ago gets fairly limited results, and i made a guess based on a small section of the NAACP's suit against the Metro Board of Education. The decision was made in April '68, so it probably covered the '68-'69 school year.
  5. Cameron was suspended from all interscholastic sports for an entire school year '69-'70. It involved actions of students and fans at a basketball tournament game. I can't imagine that penalty being given now.
  6. I've got no more idea of what happened than anybody else, and it would be inappropriate for me to comment on the issue. But in all aspects of life, I tend to be pretty skeptical of conspiracy theories. Except the government's cover-up of space aliens. That stuff's real.
  7. Hurry back to your position of esteem in your village; they miss you. We, on the other hand, shall endeavor to persevere without you.
  8. I watched the whole painful affair. MBA has played its big men both ways all season, with liberal substitution. The major problem was the inability to make a stop in the second half, thus leaving the defense on the field the whole time. Even MBA's touchdown, while a good thing, forced the defense right back onto the field. And while an 80 yd TD pass is debilitating, returning the kickoff inside the MBA 30 probably eased the pain quite a bit. For my money, the two facemask penalties, especially the second one, were devastating. Like Ensworth, MUS is dangerous enough on their own: you don't need to help them. I'm not much of a "moral victory" man, but I was pleased at MBA's final drive. Nothing came of it, but it was poised and well executed. You can criticize aspects of MBA's play, but not their effort. As to records, "Roll Red Roll" is the gold standard on that issue, but I believe MUS is one of very few opponents MBA has played with some regularity who has a winning record against us. Good luck to both teams...should be a good one.
  9. My two cents...MBA has the talent to beat MUS, but MUS is one school that seems to have MBA's number, regardless of how the talent shakes out. My limited perception of MUS is that they're very well disciplined and well coached, and manage to get better results than their talent would suggest. This becomes a major issue when one considers that they're generally pretty talented. I'm hopeful, but an MBA loss wouldn't really shock me. BA-Ensworth...Ok, offering an opinion here is a little like going to a website poll to answer "I don't know." There are a lot of factors here, and there's simply no way to guess how they work out. I think Ensworth is more talented, though not by a wide margin, and that may be offset by the fact that BA seems a little deeper, but younger and less experienced. I'm not sure about West Nashville, but in my section of the world, it's been raining since last night, and only stopped in the last couple of hours. Grass field, lots of rain, late November...It should be messy. One personal note...I love football in the rain on a grass field. when I'm the emperor, in addition to there being a lot less folks driving and permits to wear miniskirts or spandex, there will be NO artificial turf. Ok, based on the rant, it's probably time for my meds. Let's hope for good games and safe travels tonight.
  10. I think it means that a win over BA is a signal accomplishment. It happens seldom enough that it can make a season. It's a pretty strong testament to the high esteem in which BA's opponents hold them.
  11. ...and if you should have sons of your own, take them to high school football games when they're young. It's time that neither you nor they will ever regret.
  12. Anybody who knows Ricky Bowers or his work knows that he never pulls his starters early, and he certainly would not "tank" a game. He wants to win everything from the coin toss on.
  13. I'm filing this stat, and the night as a whole, under "Things I Didn't See Coming."
  14. Ensworth can be beaten, but you need the stars to align properly. You need EHS to be a little off their game. A cold, rainy night with a slick field might slow them down a little bit (if Ensowrth runs wild, cutting at will on your new field...well, you probably won't appreciate the irony). You will also need to play your very best game. Shakin's observation re turnovers is dead on. The same applies to penalties. Ensworth has sufficient talent to beat pretty much anyone; they don't need your help. And even then, it might not be enough.
  15. Hoping folks like you will come back so we can discuss football with grown-ups again. I've said it before, the BA posters were my favorite posters here. They were insightful, articulate, classy when they lost, and gracious when they won.
  16. I became a referee after following football closely (non-friends would say obsessively) for 45 years. I'm amazed at how little I knew. It is the most complex game I can imagine.
  17. The rules relating to kicks (of any sort) are confusing at times, and very poorly understood. As you describe it, the McCallie player's action constitutes "first touching." This marks the worst spot BA would receive the ball if they tried to return the ball. Conversely, and adding to the confusion, is the fact that if the ball had struck a BA player, McCallie could have recovered the ball, but not advanced it. The best summary of this situation is, "A kick is a kick until someone possesses it." McCallie never possessed the ball.
  18. I think you're thinking of Ensworth's lower school.
  19. Your attitude was very common in the '70's. Public school coaches relished playing the private schools. They thought it was a great chance to measure their programs, and they won a fair number of the games. Now, advocating public schools playing private schools qualifies you for inclusion in a museum. And I'd love to see us go back to 3 divisions, with only district champions going into the playoffs.
  20. My guess is that Ensworth wins easily. They have a lot of size, and are scary fast. If you make mistakes, they will drive them down your throat. That said, they don't need your help to win: you (meaning anybody) might play your best game against Ensworth, and still lose by several. Still, I applaud GC for scheduling the game, and I suspect they'll be a better team for it. Best of luck, and safe travels.
  21. I realize Maryville has had its share of detractors, but the detractors of DII programs all work from the premise that all DII accomplishments are the product of routine, systematic, and all-pervasive cheating. In the days when I posted regularly here, we talked football. The fact that every topic moves to cheating just sucks any pleasure out of the board. It's not a lack of backbone, just a decision not to spend as much time o a site that's no longer much fun.
