  1. Did Hillsboro and Hendersonville bag on you? They should have added quite a bit of excitement to an already great tournament.
  2. Tennessee wrestlers are bumping into each other on a national stage...and I'm proud of them. Kevin Ward (Okla St.) and Jake Yost (UTC) wrestled recently in a college match. Patrick Simpson (Army) and Jordan Leen (Cornell) (141) wrestled this weekend at the Cornell Invitational deep in the consolation bracket. Patrick finished third and Jordan was Patrick away from placing. Phillip (149) placed second.
  3. Dickson Co. usually has a tournament that weekend.
  4. Jaggers was senior national champ last spring. He stuck a highly regarded Tirapelle...whose brother squeaked one out over Phillip in the finals of senior nationals several years earlier. Small world. Looking at the photos of Patrick on the Army website show him a lot thicker.
  5. The Army website has an article that Patrick placed 2nd this weekend losing 2-0 to Ware in the finals, but doesn't mention Phillip. Does anyone have any info? Congrats to Patrick!
  6. I'll admit Castleman was a little nuts. You never knew what you were going to get. He was on the edge. Patrick and Phillip were very polite about whipping your butt. You figure you don't have a chance against them, but they probably weren't going to do you permanent harm. You never really got that from Bobby Gorham (Ryan). He wasn't the best wrestler in the state (close) but you never felt safe until well after the match, and then you didn't go drinking with him afterward.
  7. Here are a few: Bobby Gorham-heard he used to get checked for weapons during prematch. Also, heard he ripped the arm off the guy he heard that from and almost beat him to death with it. John Lennon-he used to beat his own ###### before the match...think he cared much about you. Scott Wells-who could have wanted to wrestle this guy.
  8. Another big school without a wrestling program is Gallatin. Does anyone know if it is football related for either school. A thousand years ago football coaches didn't want to let their players wrestle because they were afraid the wrestling coach would make them cut weight after spending so much time fattening them up. Does anyone still think like this? We could run off a huge list of former wrestlers who are now great players.
  9. Beating a state champ ALWAYS counts for something. Nic wrestled went looking for the toughest competition he could find this summer. He didn't try to protect his "title" or record. He took some lumps but also beat some really good kids from out-of-state. He learned a lot and, he is much stronger this season.
  10. Oh my God. Is this a typical thread? First time viewing soccer (typically follow another sport). I'm wondering if this is what I have to look forward to when my little girl gets older. I'm a soccer fan (and youth coach). I did not see what sounds like an exciting game between two teams with a lot of tradition (and usually class). What is apparent is that the two keepers have a lot of class. I can't believe some are attacking individual girls. I also know you don't put yourself in a position to allow the ref to make the difference in the game. If Franklin was dominant and had Hendersonville outgunned, then their failure was not getting the ball in the back of the net. If you play long enough, and these two teams have, you will get beat by a team you outplay. You also win some games in which you were outplayed. That's just part of it.
  11. It should be easier for you this year since teams have to input their wrestlers' results on a website, which is public information, as I understand it. Not sure what the site address is.
  12. Can you guys fill in the non-coaching world about "substate" next season? How are the current post season tournaments changing?
  13. We've talked over and over about the Traditional tournament being an individual tournament. Do we "know" McCallie's decision wasn't about individuals? No question Manley got the short end of the stick. But, I thought Coach Connell was fullfilling a promise he made to another wrestler who took one for the team last year...and four out of five individuals are happy aren't they?
  14. love4thesport, You know Lane and Leen split this year...right?? Look at the thread about the 4 deserving seniors to read about the real champions.
  15. A quick note to and observation of the seniors wrestling in their last state high school tournament: It struck me as I watched a young man leave the mat in tears one match short of the medal round, he was a senior. Very doubtful he will ever wrestle again, no college letters coming to his address, not for wrestling anyway. His tournament wasn't over, his career was. With hundreds of wrestlers starting the season in each weight class he had come so far, but I could see in his eyes that he had so far to go. In the big picture wrestling is not about winning a state championship. If it was most of us would be losers. But, I think most of us will acknowledge that it is the dedication, sacrifice, and suffering that binds us and makes all who endure a winner. Hopefully these young man will pass it on to their sons.
  16. Is there any truth to the rumor that when Marable passed Scott on the way to sign his bout sheet he said, "it should have been you"?
  17. Wrestlingforlife, you know what to do and who to ask, or should. The assigner for your area and trainer live right there in Hendersonville. The training is a little different in Middle TN than West...no slight to Coach Delgado, he is very concerned about adequate training for the officials in the Memphis area.
  18. 119 was a really tough weight class in region 7. Ric Bundy beat Plunk (who wrestled the consolation finals) but lost two tough matches afterward.
  19. Here's what I was told by a couple of friends: 103 shelton, bogdan, 112 bundy, ?, nw, 119 cox, c'ville ?, 125 tisdale, shanes 130 seaman, bogdan 135 clarksvlle, beech 140 145 sanders, gordy 152 160 171 189 pease, baker, trevor, rossview 215 brooks, rouse 275 sycamore, clarksville, ne, cheatham co
  20. Didn't see the 171 pound match so I have no opinion of it. However, there are plenty of circumstances when the offensive wrestler can be on his back. This is how defensive pins occur. When an offensive wrestler is close to a defensive pin there are no nearfall points because there is no change in control.
