I have seen a few players this year practice with a team, play with another team and ask if they can play for two teams. I don't like to refer to "Summer Ball" as AAU, since most of the teams just play tournaments now. Of course, if a player is listed on a roster and has his AAU card with a team, he can't play in an AAU tournament with another team.
Sponsored teams seem to have a leg up, especially with players that have parents strapped for cash. They can recruit with the player or his parents not having to pay anything out of pocket.
My question is this. How do some of the teams that are not sponsored handle this issue? I know that between tournaments, travel, rooms, meals, etc., a decent Summer tournament schedule can run $1000 to $1500 a player. Any thoughts? Do you get sponsors for individual players, and then let the players with more affluent parents pay for their own kid, but not let them know?
