Here's a Rant for this topic not directed at anyone or from any perspective, just an old school attitude, my apologies for the randomness:
Too much attention is paid to individual recogniton for a team sport. If stats should decide selection, why vote? If your player deserves the honor, vote lower since you can't vote for your own. Too much potential corruption, especially when all teams haven't played one another. Way too easy to make a player sound and look great/or not so great. Unknown opponents from out of state may not do a players stats justice.
I don't doubt that individual recognition is important, but how goals were scored, consistent definitions of statistics, and performance in crucial games are nearly impossible to justify in a 2 hour meeting.
There is no easy way to recognize efforts, you can only hope that decisions are kept within the spirit of the game, if not, the accolades mean nothing.
