  1. Babybearmom, I apologize if you took my mentioning Rusty and Matt as name calling. I've enjoyed following their careers and they represent TN in the best light at Okie St. and Nebraska respectively. What I was trying to convey is that both of them would wrestle anyone, anywhere, anytime (and they still do). Bradley has a policy about their schedulling and that is certainly their option. I would just prefer a unified State Tournament.
  2. Kid's (and their parents) are going to gravitate to a successful program - regardless of the DI or II. I've coached in DI since the 80's, first at a public school and later in a private one (a handfull of these exist -at least for the next two years). Elite wrestlers practice year round in open practice rooms, camps, leagues, etc. They don't refuse to drill or go in live rounds with a partner because of what Division they belong to during the school year. They look for every opportunity to get better. When Rusty Blackmon and Matt Keller went to Senior Nationals, they didn't forfeit matches to competitors from private schools. I once asked the best wrestler I had coached to that point what camps he recommended at the end of his career and his answer was..."the camp where you get the ____ beat out of you. I was always better after one of those". If you want to get better and be THE best you go where the best are and you wrestle them. Why does California get to send 8 in each weight class to the Nationals? Because they've got 800 wrestling programs competing for one title. If you have experienced TN wrestling for at least fifteen years you've seen the quality and participation go up ending with two state championship teams and 28 individual state champions - several of whom are undefeated wrestling guys from multiple states but never meeting the other state champion from Tennessee. There is way too much water under the bridge to bring it back the way it was. In two years I'll be a DII coach for the first time - but the only change in my schedulling will be that the State Championship goes for two days instead of three. I agree with the previous poster that said if you want the quality and overall strength of TN wrestling to improve then stop typing and get involved with a youth program.
  3. Franklin Road Academy May 26-30 / 12:30 - 3:30 M-F Wrestling Camp I is for pre-k through rising 4th graders. This camp emphasizes basics and getting them excited about the sport. Lots of games and short contests ending with a mini tournament on Friday. Shorts and t-shirts - send them with snack money during the break. July 14-17 / 8:30 - 11:30 M-F Wrestling Camp II is a middle school camp. This is a good intro camp also but we can accomodate more experienced wrestlers as well. Stresses technique and good positioning T shirt / Shorts and wrestling shoes Both camps directed by Marc Taylor. Counselors and coaches from FRA varsity Sign up at www.frapanthers.com Click on summer camp and scroll down.
  4. Certification will also be affected. Many of you have seen the new body mass scales you can get. They send an electric pulse (you have to be barefoot) through your body and a reading will display body fat %. The water displacement method is prohibitive as far as expense. We may see a combination of using electronic scales and manual caliper testing if you don't have access to a body mass scale. Athletes will only be able to certify within an acceptable range of their body mass reading at the beginning of the season.
  5. KKW, I just read the article on Stephen Hedrick yesterday. It's kids like that that make coaching a truly rich part of your life. I edited my earlier post on this thread and support your idea wholeheartedly. You're good for kids and good for the sport.
  6. Thought about it, and I agree with KKW. [Edited by dblXface on 2-20-03 12:03P]

  8. Markese won in the semis at Ryan early in their careers Markese won the finals of the Kirby Invitational Markese won the State Finals in their last meeting Charles won a freestyle match against Markese the following June When Markese was a freshman in college, Charles won the State and National Championship. They were both amazing to watch. Charles graduated from Nebraska and is still in Lincoln. He qulified for the NCAAs twice and had a stellar career for a guy plagued with injuries. Kese is coaching in Memphis after a great college career. Both of these men were and are what you wanted your athletes to strive to be on and off the mat. [Edited by dblXface on 2-12-03 12:22P]
  9. If this doesn't seem right - Would you rather have sectionals and send the finalists to an eight man bracket championship placing 8? Region 3 has Boyd Buchanon and Tyner Academy in with Bradley and Cleveland. Even though it doesn't seem right, wrestlers from those single A schools at least have an opportunity to place in the top four and be part of the state championships. It doesn't seem right not to have Cleveland in the state duals either, but Al and his guys get another opportunity to make statements the next two weekends. [Edited by dblXface on 2-5-03 11:46A]
  10. Overton High School Friday 7th 5:30 Championship Rounds 1 & 2 Saturday 8th 9:00 Semis - Consys on 1 mat until semis are completed Finals at 5:00 This schedule is tentative
  11. If you go to the Tennessee Wrestling Federation site there is information on the bulletin board on how to access live coverage on the internet. I think it costs $10.
  12. Daniel Crosby is one of the elite and a great human being. He appreciates the strengths of the individuals he faces and always displays class. From the round of 16 on in Chattanooga this year there will be some great heavyweight action. Greeneville seems to always crank out a great heavyweight.
  13. Region VI at Overton Saturday 4:00 pm [Edited by dblXface on 1-24-03 2:05P]
  14. Empro, You may be confusing Derrick with Erick. Erick did take alot of timeouts, but so did Marquise. I wouldn't exclude either one of them. Once in the Franklin Duals, Derrick was down by three and went out of bounds with a Soddy kid ranked fifth at the time. They both run back to the ten foot circle (neutral)with four seconds left. Whistle blows and Derrick heel picks him straight to his back and wins by one. That's bad. As far as bad like animal beating on you bad, Keller, McCarty,M. Carletello, D. Vance, Spencer, Matt Mondelli, B. Larimer [Edited by dblXface on 1-24-03 2:47P]
  15. Michael Spencer from Kirby Ronnie Stevenson from McGavock
  16. District 11 Duals scheduled for tonight at FRA are postponed until Tue. the 21st - same time Weigh-ins 4:00 / Wrestling at 5
  17. Wrestling needs to be ONE champion. Dedicated 400 meter runners are phenomenal athletes willing to sprint a ridiculous distance. They can be seperated in a championship because their results are quantified by a stopwatch. If my kid is the DI 400m champ and his time is better than the DII 400m champ, I have an answer to who is faster because I have a time to prove it. Same goes for all Track and Field events. The best and worst part about wrestling is - anything can happen. You can be winning the NCAA Div. I finals 14-2 with a minute left and get pinned. I am a huge track and field fan and appreciate their training and dedication. The difference is the predatory nature of wrestlers. They practice mostly underground (everybody's wrestling room is in a basement or some other space nobody wants unless you have a benefactor or organization to provide you one). They run on their own after practice or the next morning. They are mostly appreciated by their competitors because their classmates go to basketball games. Wrestling and wrestlers will always be misunderstood by those who aren't in it, as competitors, coaches, parents,or fans. We've accepted that. ...and the best want one tournament. If not here, then they go to the Nationals. Nobody asks if the guy in your bracket was a prep wrestler or private school guy there... they just find out who the best is.
  18. Trackman, It needs to be one tournament. Father Ryans first match is with FRA (this is your Bradley scenario). FRA steps up to what they will see with Overton, Soddy, McCallie, MBA, and eventually Baylor when they go to Greenville. Their coach ought to be arrested.
  19. Wrestling up will do that to you, which is what Charles did when he wrestled Kevin. Michael was rough but I wouldn't call him nasty. I wrestled Charles alot but never got the opportunity to work out with Michael. I'll check with Gordon. How about Nick Brugal (Hvwt runner-up from Bolton) vs. Tywann Armstrong of Franklin?
  20. Whit Dunning / Father Ryan Placed 6th at 112 in Division II...weighing 98
  21. Michael vs Tony and then... Michael vs.Matt Mondelli ...... McTorry wins going takedowns
  22. Charles McTorry vs Michael Carletello Marquise Nelson vs Michael Carletello McTorry vs Nelson one more time (Charles beat Marquise in a freestyle match)
  23. Several years years ago a girl from McMinneville (or somewhere close to that ) made it to the state tournament at 103. It was before the division split. I had Casey Brewster on the mat next to her. She was wrestling the Baylor kid, and when the match started I was BLINDED by the media flashes. There was alot of great wrestling going on that Thursday that got shoved aside for the sake of the huge front page picture the Free Press decided to use on their Friday edition. The girl from Cookeville didn't make it in cause she was a middle weight. She was a much better athlete and wrestler than the 103. I think she was an All-American in girls only competition. XWRISTED is right. Girls wrestling guys is lose/lose for the guy. However, if we don't provide some girls only tournament competition it will eventually create problems for us concerning Title IX.
