  1. If Halls wins, they become the third quality win for Sevier County which automatically gives them third in the region. That leaves us tied with CC (if they lose and we win) and then we win on head-to-head.
  2. I think your region one is not quite right. If Campbell County loses to Karns and Sevier and Jeff County win, it will result in a three-way tie that has to go to the third tie-breaker, past head-to-head, and overall wins to what is called quality wins (wins over teams that are .500 or greater). Right now, Sevier has two, CC one and Jeff County one. If nothing changes in those numbers, Sevier goes automatically as number three in region and then Jeff County wins in head-to-head with Campbell County. Actually, games played by a couple 4-5 teams may affect the outcome, namely Halls and Mo'Town West. If Halls wins, that will give Sevier three quality wins and they are automatically third if they win. If Mo'town West wins, it will give Jeff County two quality wins. CC's only chance of having two quality wins (provided it loses to Karns) is if Science Hill beats DB, not a real possibility. To insure a play-off spot, CC needs to beat Karns. If they lose, they can still get in but it won't be in their control. I know this is all clear as mud but that's the way it works out!
  3. JC4Life--thanks for digging it up for me. Let's see, we need to beat Bearden, Karns needs to beat Campbell County, and we need Halls to win, or Mo'town West to win. Boy that's clear as mud but distinctly possible. It would be much easier if we just beat Bearden and SD upsets SC!!
  4. Just read on another thread that a Kingsport paper has said that the Pats are eliminated in a three-way tie. According to this source, the only way Jeff County gets in is by beating Bearden and SD beating SC at SC--highly unlikely. What say you who know what the criteria are? Does overall record come into play? I'd sure like to know.
  5. Those Oak Ridge guys trash talk in their sleep. Must be something in their water. I think this week's prep for the game will tell alot about whether this team really wants the season to go beyond next week. If they're hungry, Bearden is toast. I'd just like to see us play beyond the first quarter with an instensity that really shows how good the Pats are. The offense looked better last week though the line didn't perform as well. Amazing what a few more pass plays down the field will do. The Trib carries stats--Crouch is averaging 40.3 yards a catch! (Of course, he only has three!) If we'd just worked on the passing game a little more earlier......... It will be interesting to see if coach works on the complete package against Bearden (just in case we get help and make the playoffs) or just bangs it out with Shivy just because we can. BTW, was #21 a freshman who ran back one punt for us last week? With Shane, Shivy, and Crouch, what did it say to the team bringing this guy in? Are we working on this year or planning on next year already? I'd hate to see a turnover cost us this late in the season.
  6. What happens if Sevier County, Campbell County, and Jeff County are all tied at 4-3 in the region? A distinct possibility! SC wins both their games, CC loses to DB and Karns, Pats beat Bearden. All 4-3. Pats beat CC on head-to-head but lose to SC on the same. CC beats SC on h-t-h but loses to JC on the same. SC beats the Pats on h-t-h but lose to CC on the same. We're all even! How do you select two of the three to join DB and Karns for the play-offs? Anybody got a calculator? What are the rules beyond head-to-head? Of course, if Bearden would just beat SC tonight, it would make things much simpler!
  7. The Pats came out with more intensity than I thought they might considering the disappointment of last week's loss. Ben passed well, and would have had an even better game except his protection broke down a time or two with Dallas wide open down the field. Shane had a good game--it was his birthday. But the man of the game was Billy Luther--it was one of the best games by a high school tackle I have ever seen--especially since SD tackle on that side was supposed to be their stud. On to Bearden. I'll be rooting for DB tomorrow night. May go to Ooltewah/Oak Ridge or Maryville/Central or Maury/Jefferson (Middle school).
  8. I certainly agree. I'll take losses for souls any day. Coach U is a great Christian man and is not afraid to pray or speak a word about Christ; however, I think we need to be careful how we throw accolades like these around. The glory should always go to Christ. Christianity expresses itself ultimately through self-giving love. Expressing tough love is necessary, but so is holding on to a person and never letting go because they are of infinite value because Christ gave his life for them. Comments have been made by Oakland and Region4fan early in the year about Coach weeding out players as our team numbers decreased and he has commented about his brutal honesty--both used wrongly can rob a young man of his aspirations and may even send him down the wrong path. Being a Christian means loving everyone, not just those who buy into your system. Being Christian means a willingness to admit your own mistakes and to seek forgiveness from those you have offended. Being Christian means being willing to take constructive criticism, be honest with yourself, and make improvements. I know I have a long way to go in each of these areas myself but I simply want to point out that we are all sinners saved by grace and any glory about one's faith should be given to God. Coach is a good man, but he certainly is not perfect and neither am I. Mistakes have been made this year--it's not just the kids' fault.
  9. Congrats 'Kees! Congrats Coach Hutch! Maybe you can catch JC sleeping Thursday night--NOT! The Pats watched film and have a lot of respect for the talent on SD--don't think they'll underestimate you--they already did that last Friday night with Sevier County. But congrats any way!
  10. I think JC will come to play Thursday night unless they are deflated by the wrong kind of motivation during the week. The SC game was uninspired and poorly planned--both problems fall into the laps of the coaching staff. I have been supportive of the coaches all year but was highly disheartened after the last game. Brewer had the SC boys inspired and they came with the right game plan. We've yet to show we can adjust to folks loading up for the run. We did resort to the pass on obvious passing situations--not exactly the best way to keep the defense honest. You can play smash-mouth football until you run into somebody just as big and more inspired--then you have to adjust and do some other things. The problem is that we have so seldom done the other things that the players do not have confidence executing plays that have been called only once or twice all year--and I'm not talking about trick plays but basic pass plays and misdirections. Luckily, I don't think that SD can match up with us so we can probably do the same old thing and win. Jeff County 24 South Doyle 13
  11. I'm hangin' in, I just hope the kids do. Thanks for your advice. Tonight was just hard to handle--even for those of us who have been supportive all year.
  12. Thanks for the exchange--it's cathartic. You sound like a great football fan. It's just been such an up and down season. And our seniors only have this year.
  13. I hope so--unfortunately we sometimes see only the negative.
  14. Oakland, I appreciate your support of Coach U. Chemistry is really suffering right now and so are the adjustments that are needed while the game is going on. These two things fall into the coach's lap. I just hope he gets it right the next couple weeks. He has "lost" some kids because he has shown that he only believes in a few.
  15. It's hard to execute when you don't believe in yourself.
  16. I am very disappointed and re-evaluating my appraisal of certain things. These kids deserve more.
  17. This whole subject does bring in an interesting dilemma. I am the first one to hold team up as being most important--however, as someone has stated with Yeary, playing a player where the team needs him most may not be the spot where the individual player can flourish and move on to the next level. Winning with defense this year may put up the most "W"s but moving Yeary out of the offensive line may cost him with the recruiters. Not really a criticism but a conjecture about the difficulty of melding what a team needs and what an individual player needs to move on to the next level. Don't get me wrong, Yeary has played like a stud on defense but he lacks the size to be considered a defensive lineman in college. Maybe a move to LB would work but I'm not sure about his foot speed. As a guard, he would be a man among boys.
  18. I think you're wrong about next year's class as far scholarships go--it just won't be in football for someone like Crouch who'll probably play baseball somewhere. He's got the speed--I just don't think the way he's been moved around (like Yeary) has helped him embrace football for the future. Chad Williams has the size but needs alot of work. Trey will probably get an academic scholarship somewhere (like Parker) and be your boss someday. As far as football scholarships go, you may be right. But through the years I have seen guys develop in their senior year and sign with places no one would have believed. We'll see! As far as marketing players, you are right on. A coach who can market his players is worth his weight in gold. You can have a winning season every year and only a few stars go on to play or you can get many of them "college ready" and then make the case for them with the right people in the right places. I don't know how Coach U is doing in this area as yet. The jury is still out. Maybe oakland or region4 can fill us in on coach's past in this area.
  19. I agree with the analysis of this year's crop of seniors. I'm not sure that even with a consistent coach and talent development at a premium that most of these guys would rate beyond small college caliber. Maybe Hops would have developed more and because he's got the size and strength, he might have cracked the D1 level. The other guys have a lot of heart and give everything they have, they just do not have the natural physical atributes to demand D1 attention. Speed and size are probably the greatest assets needed--strength can be built. If a kid has the right size for his position and can run well, he's got a chance. As far as demeanor goes, Yeary, Luther, Red, Green and Smiley have what it takes--unfortunately it takes more than just attitude. I think Michael Cox is the only one who has an outside chance of going somewhere where they play on TV--if the scholarship dollars aren't the most important thing. I believe he could almost walk-on at any place that is losing a senior punter this year--but he'd have to pay his way at first.
  20. Also, Jenkins, if he chooses fb over baseball, could kick for a small college.
  21. Michael Cox--he has the leg to at least play DII, if not higher.
  22. Never recommended Dave Thomas for Mr. Football. I'll let others make his case. I just know that an award of this stature needs to go to a player that performed in an exceptional way for ten different nights during the regular season and at least a few into the play-offs. Duran did not perform well against a team that is 4-3 on his home field. 'Nuff said.
  23. Duran didn't get pulled against Jeff County and had a terrible game--70 yards passing, 2 INTs and 0 TDs. He's got great size and a good arm but if DB plays a team that puts pressure on the QB and keeps the game in front of them, Duran has troubles. Great players (Mr. Football types) have great games against good defensive teams. Duran will have to win state to change my mind and get my vote.
