I don't think stats should be the end-all of that discussion. I think there needs to be a A, AA, and AAA state team. You can't compare what a person does against A competition to what a person does against AAA. Stats are just too subjective.

What if athletic directors instituted a $50 player fee at the begining of each school year. That money could be set aside for officials at each game. You can handle any "Economic Hardships" as one offs. You can use gate fees for any short fall. Booster clubs could also contribute. $500 gos a long way in helping pay for officials. Coaches are allowed to do fund raisers. You have to take care of the game first before you make improvements. If umpires need a raise than fine, give them a 10% raise. Folks have plenty of excuses why things are wrong or can't get done. I feel like you are part of the problem or part of the solution. I'm not wild about everything the TSSAA does but they should not be the excuse for not having some sports. Look closely at AD's and administrators. Do you have quality solution based leadership guiding your student athletes? $500.00 would pay for what....two home games? Out of 15-20 for some schools. I think it's a good idea, but that's not much of a dent in that cost. I think umpires are well paid for what they are asked to do. If they were promised a raise and had it taken back, that would be unfair to them, of course. Regardless, I think people forget that alot of programs don't have the revenue generating streams that some of these machines do. If you can't raise the funds, or don't have the crowd, to pay the umpires, you end up playing a ton of games on the road.

The two Overton players deserved to be on that team. We played them twice and I have no problem with the nominations. Yes, their district schedule is an easy ride, and that lack of a challenge probably hurt them when they were trying to beat Mt. Juliet and advance to state. However, those two kids would be two of the top players in any district in the state. If you saw them play, you'd agree.

Clarksville and Mt. Juliet were tied 0-0 until the sixth inning when Mt. Juliet jumped for 3 runs. Clarksville answered with three of their own and left the winning run on third. A couple mistakes by Clarksville allowed Mt. Juliet to capitalize and go up 7-3. Clarksville answered, cutting the score to 7-6 with the tying run on 2nd, but couldn't get the last hit they needed. A great game. Looking forward to playing Ravenwood. Don't know much about them. Mt. Juliet and Overton is going to be a great game. Both teams good enough to not only make it to state, but go far.

The whole 5AAA/6AAA region is just stacked this year. The rest of this week should be really interesting.

Clarksville defeated Hendersonville 5-4 in 11 innings. Hendersonville went up 4-0 after two innings, then only accounted for two hits over the next nine innings. Outstanding game on both sides

Don't know anything about anyone or any team, but I will say this. Any coach who says to another player "come play with us and we'll make sure you get playing time" or anything similar to that is violating a clear rule. If you want to recruit, go to D-2. If you support that school, it's probably not a good idea to come on a public message board and say that your coach does that sort of thing.

David I agree with you. I guess I'm just a traditionalist in that I don't think baseball is a game designed to be determined by a one game series. There's just too much parity when you match up really good teams. That, and I think it's tough for teams to work hard, win 25-30 games and be one of the best teams with good depth only to run into a stud who pitches for an average team. Another issue I've got is that I don't know how fair it is to have the same districts competing against each other every year. There are some teams that really have to work harder to win their district than win their region.....you know.

so you telling me that although the umpire saw it he shouldnt call it. come on man .listen to what you just said. I'm saying that at that point in the game, that call is near impossible to make unless you're looking for that. I don't have a dog in the race, so it doesn't matter to me. But I believe games should be decided by the players. And it seems like the Dyer Co. people have a right to be upset. I don't know a coach in the world that would not lose it in that situation

Rossview defeated Henry Co. yesterday 5-4, eliminating the Patriots. Clarksville defeated Dickson Co. 1-0 in 8 innings in the winner's bracket final. Rossview will play Dickson today at 4:30 to determine who faces Clarksville in the championship game and earns the second region spot.

I'll tell you what though. There have been a handful of games this year where the umpires have been outstanding. Always in position. Easy to communicate with. Win or lose, the games go by smoothly

Again, I said it's good money for what's being asked. I didn't say it was alot. But any job you can have that pays you an average of $20.00 an hour is good money. I'm not sure how loaded you are, but where I'm from, there are lots of people who would gladly take that salary. In fact, there are plenty who would be lucky to get a $10.00/hr job right now. I guess we are not as lucky as you. Be good at what you do, that's it. Take pride in making the right call. Work as hard as the people trying to win a game.

You really think $65/game is a lot? $65 for the game and you probably have to leave your regular job early, work another 2-3 hours and get home at 10:00 p.m. Yeah, sounds like a piece of cake to me. If you truly think $65 for a game is a lot, you need a better job yourself! Yes, I think $130.00 to umpire two baseball games is decent money. That's $50.00 more than a person making $10.00/hr makes working an 8 hour shift. For that much money, I expect someone to know the rules. That's not asking much And my purpose for beginning this thread was not to attack balls and strikes and missed calls. People expect that. But it's also fair for coaches to expect umpires to know rules, be in position and be able to call a balk when they see one.

I think you've got a logical point. But other schools experience that as well.

Umpiring seems to be a hot topic this year, certainly in the mid-state area, so I thought some discussion might be in order. Umpiring in Clarksville is decent compared to what I've seen in Nashville and Dickson so far this year. It's frustrating when you feel like these guys seem to be having too much of an impact on the game. Now I wouldn't complain if these guys weren't making what $65.00 a game in some places? We had teams from Ohio come to our tournament where they pay their umpires $45.00. I think there ought to be a little more accountability for their performance, because what we've had so far has been just bad. The sad thing is, in our town we have middle school umpires who would rather just do middle school. Make a little less, but you can stay in town, and not be at the mercy of some other guy making your schedule. And they are much better than most of the high school guys we get. Has anyone else had this experience?

Nice to see we weren't the only ones that saw the ball skip a foot in front of the right fielder. It killed our momentum and any shot we had. Overton is a great team, one of the best I've seen this year, but that game was handed to them. Would have been bases loaded no outs. Instead it's 2 outs and runner on third. Think that made a difference? Umpiring aside, Creek Wood was a great host last weekend. First class
