  1. Goodpasture is looking for a team to make a tri Friday, December 9. The other team visiting is Springfield. Let me know asap. hamblinconstruction@yahoo.com
  2. Thank you for the clarification. I misunderstood your line of reasoning. I thought I answered well enough but after reading it I noticed I did not explain why it is a varsity event instead of JV. If you notice the majority of the teams are small school. We are small school and we are still very new. Our boys are all varsity by virtue of our numbers. We have attended a small school event the past 2 seasons around this date but now that event is cancelled. We picked it up and tried to maintain the same concept but we were only able to get so many teams so I extended the invitation to big schools. Some big schools chose to send a "B" team and as long as they don't violate the scheduling rules by doing so I have no problem with it. All three big school teams with a "B" squad are from the same region. The door is open to a few more. I plan on keeping this date even after we go DII. Hope I have done a better job of explaining this.
  3. Cbg.....I am not sure who you are or why it matters to you why I made this a varsity event but I will spend a moment to explain it to you. We are building a program. Programs take money to operate. Although Goodpasture is in good shape financially I believe it is important for a sports program, of any proportion, should earn their keep. I believe it helps teach the kids to understand the hand up philosophy instead of the hand out. Running a tournament, as much as a headache as it can be will help our program earn money. If a school has the numbers to support a second varsity squad and they choose to use a date to do 2 events that same day then that is their business. No rules broken here. I commend them for getting their kids mat time. I cannot for the life of me understand why people offer their opinion about things that do not effect them in any way. Maybe they are bored, with it being off season, or maybe they are just being nosey. Either way, with all due respect I will operate my program the way I see fit and you run yours the way you see fit and I promise I will not question your motives if you promise to respect mine. Thank you.
  4. Adding Clarksville "B" team to the mix. Looking for 3 more teams.
  5. Coffee County is added. This makes 14. Looking for 4 more teams.
  6. Added Stratford. This makes 13. Room for 5 more teams.
  7. Added Beech "B" team to the list.
  8. Adding Wilson Central "B" and Hunters Lane and Friendship Christian to the list. We will take up to 6 more teams
  9. Goodpasture Christian will host it's first wrestling invitational tournament Saturday, Jan 14, 2017. We currently have 8 teams committed and we are looking for at least 8 more. As of now this will be a varsity only tournament but that could change, For more information email me at hamblinconstruction@yahoo.com Goodpasture. Lipscomb. DCA. Nolensville. Eagleville. Hume Fogg. Greenbrier. East Nashville.
  10. I just spoke to the Athletic Director at Creekwood. The head coach position is available. Contact Chuck Daniel at chuckdaniel@dcbe.org. I know they have a middle school program but practically zero at the aau level. Good luck to you there.
  11. Speaking as a non faculty head coach I will give you some advise. I dont know who you are and I am not promoting you, I am merely giving you a few pointers so dont take this personal. First and foremost nobody owes you anything so your approach must be subtle. You must also be extremely patient with the entire process and I don't mean after one year of aau coaching. Administrations have alot to worry about besides a non faculty coach so be ready to be insignificant in their eyes for awhile. Build a relationship of trust with the head coach and the parents. This also takes time. They don't care if you are a 4 time state champ because if you have a zero personality you won't measure up. It's about the kids. Secondly, be honest. In this day and age we are all naked in the eyes of the internet. I have seen plenty of guys talk about what they have done but after a bit of research they fade away because their credentials are bogus. Thirdly, be careful what you post on this forum. Stay positive. Hope this helps
  12. Monday, March 7 a young man spoke to the boys in the fieldhouse. I almost forgot how big he is as I haven't seen him in about a year. His name is Bruno Reagan and he stands about 6'6" and he is a trim 325 pounds. Bruno is a 3 time state wrestling medalist and a 2 time state heavyweight champion from Clarksville high school. Bruno played football from the 10th-12th grade at Clarksville high and is now a starting lineman at Vanderbilt. Imagine that....3 years of high school football and now a starting lineman at Vanderbilt. Bruno spent the better part of 30 minutes explaining the benefits of wrestling for the football player, how it helped him and how it can help others if they give it a shot. He also offered his assistance to anybody willing to try sports at the next level. The only question asked from the kids was "is it hard?" and the answer was "yes it is." Hard work is a reletive term. One persons idea of hard work is different from anothers. What they put into the sport is exactly what they should expect out of that sport. A coach will work his kids hard but he cannot force anything more than the kids can give. In my 35 years of wrestling experience I have never heard of anyone dying from a wrestling practice, but what I have experienced more times than I can count is the smile when that kid picks up his first win and the look of accomplishment when he steps on that podium after his final match. Go to apexwrestling. The list of names is amazing.
  13. PUMMELKING, I say amen to that brother x2.
  14. @firemans, tells us sir, how did you build your program into such a state power? Please tell us so that we may learn from your example.
  15. Goodpasture is looking for a 3rd team for Thursday, Feb. 4 at our place. We had to cancel our home match Tuesday because of the threat of impending severe storms. The other team involved is Hillwood. Please let me know asap if you are interested. Steve Hamblin hamblinconstruction@yahoo.com 615 504 8326
  16. Wrestler "A" wins a Division 1 state title in Tennessee. He then goes to a Division 2 college and wins a national championship at that division 2 college. Do we tell him his national title is not worthy because it was accomplished at a division 2 school?
  17. Tee, nothing personal, but can you be a little more specific when mentioning consistency and wrestling? When the words "more consistent" are used it may leave the impression that we are here one day and gone the next, then maybe back again and so on. We practice and compete every day except Sunday. We lift weights during the season and off season. We attend camp and will do so every summer, and we started a youth program this season, and it has already started paying dividends. The high school program has 3 wrestlers, one of which is a football player. I have made repeated pleas to football parents regarding this sport. I have even, on occasion, trolled this topic to try and reach others to promote the program. I sometimes get dumb responses from folks who don't have a lick of sense but that does not stop me. The benefits of wrestling for the football player are countless and all we can do is keep trying to promote it. I personally think the football staff is working hard to find success and I was present when Coach Joslin told the boys they should wrestle. Nashville Christian has it figured out with several athletes playing both sports and CPA is now starting a wrestling program. Alcoa is really shining in both sports and just like Nashville Christian, they share the athlete. These are just a few of the examples. Wrestling is a year round sport for this coach. I will continue to build it as long as they let me and I will continue to promote it, inside the school and out. Maybe if some folks would come and watch a match and see for themselves how tough these guys can be they might see a benefit for their ballplayer and put him on the mat as well. We wrestle at home this Friday, Jan. 22. 5pm. Come see.
  18. Interesting article in yesterday's Tennessean. Page 2 of sports. Vanderbilts new offensive line coach speaks somewhat highly of wrestling. Is he on to something?
  19. CPA just started a high school wrestling program. They will be club this year and they will be competing next year in the TSSAA. Maybe they are on to something? Just sayin.
  20. As I had posted previously. Wrestling is offered to all GCS students, including k-8 students. The kids are working hard and they are beginning to compete. There are no tryouts, it is offered to everyone willing to try it. Elementary is k-4, middle school is 5-8 and high school is offered to grades 8-12. Go to apexwrestlingschools.com to see a list of ballplayers and coaches who attest to values of wrestling for the ballplayer. Don't take my word for it. Check it out. The door is always open, enter the door and put the kids on the mat. Next season you will see a difference in their attitude, aggressiveness, discipline, and self confidence.
  21. I dont usually get involved in discussions like this but I would like to offer a suggestion that may help? If the kids aren't playing basketball in the winter put them on the wrestling mat. It is offered as a varsity sport at Goodpasture. Many stand out college and professional football coaches and players attest to the benefits of wrestling for the football player. He will be trained at an intensity level not seen in other sports, and he will gain a valuable understanding of leverage, hip position, eye, hand, and foot coordination all while maintaining his off season conditioning. Besides these obvious benefits he will become more aggressive and less afraid of the guy in front of him and he will learn to scrap with guys his size and sometimes guys bigger than him. Don't believe me? Ask anyone who plays both sports. Who knows, maybe he can become a really good 2 sport athlete as a result.
  22. Goodpasture will now have an AAU club team beginning in 2015. The program will consist of a k-4th grade team and a 5th-8th grade team. We have a middle school schedule and are working on an elementary schedule. If you have any questions contact me at hamblinconstruction@yahoo.com or shamblin@goodpasture.org
  23. I am selling 20 singlets in various sizes. 19 are green and white and one is blue and white. The smallest size fits a 65 pounder and the largest fits a 250 pounder. If you want more info email me at hamblinconstruction@yahoo.com. I will take $10.00 each for all of them. These would be a good buy for a middle school program.
  24. This is my first trip to Brute. The officiating crew is doing a fabulous job. Very professional and they aren't taking crap from the coaches. It is also a very smoothly run tournament.....there were a number of boys here from Tennessee.....Mike Binns won it by dominating the field. Harpeth was well represented as well as Mt Juliet, Arlington, and Wilson Central. Goodpasture had 1 freshman. Dakota Clark from Harpeth was very sharp barely losing in the finals. There is only one elementary aged kid from Tennessee here and he is the future of Goodpasture youth wrestling. He will be going for 7th. There are zero middle schoolers from Tennessee representing. 25. Can someone clarify the requirements for the girls and their ranking? I did not notice any girls in the boys rankings the entire year. Are these girls qualifying for the boys tournament currently wrestling? If not, then when did they wrestle and at what weights? Perhaps one could start a new thread for just the ladies wrestling each other. It would seem more appropriate considering the original topic..................why do I care you ask? Anna Botello. Wrestled boys in 2010/11 as a sophomore, and a first year wrestler. She went 11-22 against the boys with 7 pins, she also represented her team at the small school duals that year. In 2011/12 she went 14-0 with 14 pins and won the girls state invitational title, pinning her way through the finals. I didnt coach her the following year, 2012/13. She suffered one loss that season to the little gal from Indy. She avenged that loss and won her second girls title. Anna weighed a whopping 113 pounds soaking wet and wrested at 120. She should be included on someones list.
