Emotions aside here are the facts:

Article II, Section 17  Athletic recruiting is prohibited. Athletic recruiting is the use of influence on a student or the parents or guardians of a student, by any person(s) directly or indirectly associated with the school, to secure or retain a student for athletic purposes. Influence is interpreted in the recruiting rule as any initial contact or prearranged contact by a member of a coaching staff or representative of the school and a prospective student-athlete in the seventh grade and above

At least one current student at Wilson Central High School was extended personal invitations to virtual workouts with MJHS football and to participate in virtual position meetings via text between 3/26 and 4/17.   MJHS then stated there was a second student that met the same criteria.  Neither student was scheduled to transfer to MJHS

It was discovered that MJHS Football coaches actually invited 50 students from other schools to participate in virtual workouts with the MJHS strength coach and to attend virtual position meetings. Of the 50 students, 35 are currently in four area middle schools, 14 are current students at Wilson Central, and one student attends the adult HS.

Finally Wilson County Schools became aware of targeted attempts by the MJHS Football coaching staff to retain current members of their team in spite of the district’s rezoning plan. Emails and interviews confirm that parents were invited to a meeting where the coaching staff directed them to apply for zone exemptions and the content that they should include in their requests.

There are always multiple sides to a story and I have no knowledge of intent by MJHS to break the recruiting rule but there is significant probable cause to trigger an investigation.  Which happened.

    Thanks for clarifying that up.

a racist Milan school board member reported that to the T$$AA...that along with a couple of players transferring from Liberty to Milan and they haven't moved to Milan...TSSAA looked it but found no wrongdoing....Milan couldn't have work outs this week as a penalty of Teddy not able to read a calendar last year...and Alcoa can recruit from all over east TN and they win 3A almost every year...they're not bound bound by school zone lines...."open zone"...what a joke....

If there was a week where Milan couldn't have workouts, this would be the perfect week to do so.

I'll just never understand. When we played East they seemed to have 10 people in the visitor stands. You'd figure at least all the parents would come out. Sorry but a $8 ticket and a little over an hour drive couldn't stop me from seeing my boy play or my girls cheer in the playoffs

That’s how it is. Every playoff game we have hosted against a Memphis team didn’t bring anyone except this year Fairley brought a good crowd over. I remember in basketball in 2005 the only time our boys went to state we played BTW and they filled the gym. Memphis is and always will be a basketball city

Agreed, and it's unfortunate because the talent that Memphis has in football is honestly underrated. I drove by a football game in Memphis at the fairgrounds near the Liberty Bowl on a random Friday night, and like 100 people max (both home and visitor sides). Unfortunately, I don't know the two teams that were playing.

@WarEagleCartman, this is what you get when you have top four teams make the playoffs in each region. East was a better team (of course) in 2019, than they were in 2018. You also have to factor in that East is probably the #1 school in our state when it comes to enrollment drop. I mean, they have dropped as much as anyone in our state. And Memphis East isn't a small school, I would say they have a building that's like North Side's.

@Goldenpride agreed with you as well. Unless you're getting a 10-0 team that has a legitimate chance to make it to Cookeville, those Memphis teams would struggle to bring fans to playoff games. I've always wondered why Dyersburg will schedule a Memphis team for week 1 of the season (when there's better options out there)? Just probably get another easy win and let all the kids play.

Ironically, the University of Memphis is dealing with the same thing as well.

Tuesday night basketball game vs Morehead State: 16,000 fans will show up to FedEx Forum (80%).

American Athletic Championship game vs Cincinnati: 35,000 fans show up to the Liberty Bowl (60%).

The football in Memphis is getting a little disrespect from the citizens of Memphis. The high school talent isn't bad (especially in higher classifications) and the Tigers' football team is playing way better ball than the basketball team and is playing for something that is meaningful. Just odd and it's a head scratcher for sure.

Why do so many schools promote within ?

I'm going to take a stab and answer your question.

In basketball, and especially this year, a lot of schools promoted from within is largely due to the coronavirus. Since schools have been out since mid-March (when a lot of these jobs weren't even announced), schools aren't willing to deal with their due diligence or do their homework and find the best fit for their program. Even if schools were to be in session, you're dealing with EOC testing at the end. In addition, basketball arguably doesn't make enough revenue compared to other schools. Also, you can't really justify how good an assistant coach is, especially in basketball If a team has a 10+ win increase, or a substantial increase in offensively and defensively numbers, who gets the credit? Head coach or assistant? Yes, assistant coaches have "specific duties" (whether if it's shooting, dealing with press, or defense) to help in practice. I just don't think that persuade's the AD or principal enough.

In football, if a head coach is offensive guy, and the defensive coordinator has a very much improved defense, that justifies the defense as a very good coach. The defensive coordinator can use stats as: how many players had over 100+ tackles in a season, tackles for loss, turnovers, points allowed, and yards allowed as a measuring tool to determined how good he is.  If the numbers are good or substantially than the numbers he inherited, then you, then you know coaches will put that on their resume. Also, job openings are usually in December (where you have the holiday break) and basically through Valentine's Day for the most part. Therefore, there's more time for AD's and principals to go through their homework and find out what's the best fit. Also, there's way more "community pride" and money in football, especially in the southeast (some schools are exception to that, but very few).

In baseball/softball, unless a coach that has won numerous district titles, win 30+ games a season, have been to the spring fling a few times, or just setting the world on fire in terms of statistics, schools will probably hire from within. Unless, that assistant coach doesn't want the job.

  5. Greenfield would be on the top of my list for sure. West Carroll went deep enough in the playoffs, where people in West Tennessee will no longer consider them as a "sleeper." However, you can say they're a "sleeper" statewide.

Right now, Greenfield and West Carroll are knocking on Lake County's door. I believe some people in West Tennessee would put West Carroll as the favorite in Region 7-1A, but I do think that Lake County is still ahead of Greenfield.

At this point, I just don't know how good Lake County is going to be in 2020.  I just don't. It comes to the point where I have to take momentum over question marks. West Carroll has momentum entering 2020, and Lake County (despite winning state and going 15-0) really don't have momentum to me, which is odd.

However, I'm ready for Halls, Humboldt, and South Fulton to take the next step. It's time. I don't know what's holding Halls and South Fulton back honestly. Humboldt is a mess (and it starts with their school system, not the players). Also, the Vikings are struggling to find players.

  6. I can't imagine a basketball coach staying after school to practice from October-Mid/late February/early March and not get paid for doing that. I can't expect a football coach to coach their players from June-November and not getting paid. Not to mention in that football coaches, they're having to deal with the heat from practices for four of those six months. Knowing the fact that we're in a generation where parents want to be more involved than ever at making coaches decision, specifically on playing time. To me, this probably gives coaches in Wilson County an opportunity to look elsewhere for a job, especially if they don't see themselves in Wilson County in the long term.

Yes, if you go ask a coach why they're coaching, they're not going to say, "I'm coaching for the money." They're going to say that they're coaching for the players and the love of their particular sport. However, that extra income, is an added motivation or support, or something that makes coaches know that it's worth it.

Last time I checked, there are over 100+ jobs posted on the bulletin board.

    They got 2 years didn’t they ?

If I'm not mistaken, the fight occurred last year, and the TSSAA gave them the two year ban. Last year was year one, this season was year two.

Do you realize we have 6 classes now and some teams are traveling two hours for a district game and if you minimize it to 5 classifications seems like you would have more schools your size closer to you than 2 hrs

Yes, I do realize that we have schools that are geographically challenged in a way. There's a school in the state that is currently in a region that is 2 hours and 36 minutes away from their furthest school of travel. I do realize this. Thank you!!

I promise it would be as good or better than we have now

maybe only have 4 classes which is what i want to see if you’re worried that much about travel let’s say

With 5 seems you can adjust the number by a hundred let’s say  if more schools are in one than another. Shouldn’t be a hugh issue. But allot of people will make it one

We can't have 4 teams in one region in football and 7 teams in another region in the same classification. That's my only issue.

Did the coach resign or get fired? Is that why?

Don’t know the answer to that question. Don’t have any ties to Adamsville basketball and their posters (mainly football people) aren’t active as of late. They were quiet this past fall.

What is a head scratcher is her recruiting is not great at all and she is not interested in Chloe. I wish Tess the best but Kelly is going to have to get with the program in recruiting.

Come on now Pioneer, we all know the main reasons why Tennessee hired Harper is because she played there. If she didn't play in Knoxville, slim chance she gets hired. Phillip Fulmer isn't the brightest guy at Rocky Flop, let's not act like things at Tennessee are "political free" and full and sunny skies and tulups.

If Kelly had seen her play as much as we have, it would be a no brainer. Kid is a beast and does not turn the ball over and has the complete game. Will be interesting how TN will end up, but this is not a good look at all letting a player of her caliber get out of here.

It's that Tennessee lost their "eliteness." The SEC runs through Columbia, South Carolina, and Mississippi State is not that far behind.

It's going to be hard to judge Kelly Harper after year one, but they would've been the 6th in the SEC tournament. They didn't win a single game against teams that would've been seeds 1-5. According to ESPN women's recruiting (I don't how credible that really is), they only signed 1 player that's in the top 100.

I don't think these athletes care about the history of certain programs as much as the general public would think, which I really don't blame them.

  13. Congratulations to Chloe, very deserving to head to Indiana and play basketball. Despite not being "known" for women's basketball, Indiana is actually a surging program. Would've been a projected 5 seed in the women's tournament, and Chloe is only going to make them better. Very deserving, I wish her the best playing inside Assembly Hall for hopefully the next four years! Such deserving, everyone in West Tennessee will be rooting for her.

We'll "TryNotToSuck" next time.  Thanks for the feedback.

Haha, you're fine. I do appreciate the time that y'all have taken out of your day(s) to make this list. I understand that everybody has a different criteria in order to determine where teams should be ranked. Also, covering 300+ high schools in 95 different counties, knowing that some parts of the Volunteer State is better than others. Just thought it was strange that two teams the played on Black Friday, didn't make the list, and both of those teams are from West Tennessee. "Branding" obviously played a role in this as well.

  15. What probably happened is that Tennessee probably offered this kid a PWO and the player accepted it. He probably went to scout team and was okay with that...

Some student-athletes are okay from playing FBS football on the scout team, to where he could probably  play if he was at a FCS school, or even start if he is at a D2 school.

Great info. Still doesnt say anything to wether the kids meet the size and speed colleges are looking for.  You are also only looking at the top 25 in the state. If you pull the schools these kids come from about 50% probably come from the same 10-15 schools every yr. you know why?  Because these days kids move all the time to get to schools that win all the time. Also to find competition. Doesnt matter the size of the school - -

only size and speed Of the kid matter

It also tells me that if you attend a 1A/2A school, the chances of you playing D1 football at the FBS level are very slim.
