  1. Wartburg will shoot the 3 ball all night..........Carroll is very good in transition slashing to the basket but he will leave his feet and pick up charges. You can pound the ball inside against wartburg or at least that's what Jellico had success with in the district tournament. If GCA does not get into a 3 point shoot-out with them then they should be okay in getting a 12-15 point win IMO. Grace's size will bother them especially around the basket when they do drive but they don't do it often. Living on the 3 ball on a neutral floor is risky business for Wartburg and I don't see them having success of points in the paint. If carroll or fountain get into any foul trouble and have to sit this will spell big trouble for Wartburg and they are foul prone with the way they play using full court pressure. They try to speed you up and get you to take early shots in every possession. This match-up screams trouble for Wartburg.............. but you never know that's why they play the game. So, we shall see come Tuesday evening.
  2. If Meigs shoots the ball like they did Saturday night they will be a tough out for Harriman. But, which Meigs team will show up? The one that played excellent saturday night in a tough environment or the one that could not throw it in the ocean in the consolation game with Tellico. That game still has me baffled to say the least! I do think you can hurt Meigs by pounding the ball inside against them as they really don't have a true post presence. Meigs is guard oriented and if they shoot the ball well from outside and then that opens up their ability to slash to the basket when teams cover up the 3 ball line. One thing I do know, Meigs will not be rattled by the environment. They played lights out at Jellico especially in the 2nd half, in a standing room only packed gym and they didn't blink. The Harriman game will be intense. I think the game will come down to which team can stay out of foul trouble and have their best players available in crunch time. I look for Meigs to play some zone early to prevent fouls and then go man when they need to.
  3. Jellico pulled the upset over Oakdale in Game 1............Jellico outworked Oakdale on the boards and Jellico coach kept players fresh with running players in and out in certain points of the game. I'm still not sure why Oakdale's coach chose not to implement full court pressure for the entire game since Jellico does not really have a true point guard. Thought maybe they could turn Jellico over with their pressure and get easy baskets in transition. Oakdale was well rested having the week off and Jellico had played a tough game on Thursday with Oneida so I thought they could have wore them down with pressure. Maybe he thought he would get his better players in foul trouble by going full court pressure for the entire game. I'm no coach, but that's just an observation from my perspective. Gotta give credit to Jellico, they knocked down some big shots throughout the game to keep Oakdale at a distance and made their free throws down the stretch to seal the win. In Game 2, Coalfield free throws doomed them and I think about half way through the game it became mental for their players. It was an exciting game to watch and both teams gave very good effort with Wartburg pulling out a close win on their home floor. Coalfield has to be kicking themselves because if they hit 50% of their free throws they would be playing Jellico for the championship. Tuesday's games should be fun and exciting in front of another packed house at Wartburg.
  4. Will Campbell County ever make the regional tournament is this District or what? Loss to Clinton seems surprising even though it was on Clinton's home floor. I would have thought that CC would have enough to get the win.............. but oh well, I guess it's tournament time and anything can happen. (except Clinton knocking off OR in semis- that one will get ugly in a hurry)
  5. I think Oakdale will win, but I think Jellico will cover your 15 point prediction. I think Wartburg will knock off Coalfield in a close one by 3 and I'm making this prediction strictly on the fact that Wartburg is playing at home.
  6. That is correct Jellico, OZ, and Oneida are always left out on the short end of the vote. The four Morgan County schools always vote to keep it at Wartburg. I'm not even sure they have a meeting anymore to determine where it is played. I think Jellico, OZ, & Oneida just waved the white towel and accepted they were never gonna get it moved out of Wartburg. No other district I know of operates this way........... they all use rotation of sites or neutral site selection. This topic is talked about every year so this is nothing new to District 4 teams.
  7. District Match-ups this week........... Monday- Jellico @ Wartburg; Tuesday- Oakdale @ Oliver Springs & Oneida @ Coalfield; Friday- Sunbright @ Oakdale, Wartburg @ Oliver Springs & Jellico at Coalfield........... Oakdale & Wartburg better not sleep on Oliver Springs as playing in the Land of OZ is a difficult envirnoment.........If Coalfield wins out this week they will secure the #3 seed unless Jellico knocks off Wartburg then they will secure the #3 seed barring they hold serve at Sunbright which they should. Wartburg & Oakdale have to win out this week to keep pace for #1 seed. Should be some interesting games.
  8. Harriman vs. Meigs - 6:00 PM Tuesday at Wartburg. Grace vs. Oakdale- 7:30 Tuesday at Wartburg. I think Meigs 1-2 punch of Meadows & Moore will be enough to take down Harriman. Meadows had 34 and Moore had 31 against Jellico in the opening round of region. Much to everyone's surprise, Jellico gave Meigs a very good game on their home floor 90-80 final. I heard Jellico shot the ball very well to stay in the game. Unless Harriman can knock down some outside shots against Meigs, I think Meigs will pull away in the second half and win by 10 plus points. I think Harriman will get some open looks from the outside against Meigs but they will need to make 7-8 3"s to pull off the upset. I think Grace will pull out the win against Oakdale...... I personally think Grace will handle the enviornment at Wartburg........ it will be standing room only with Oakdale playing....... it will be interesting to see how Oakdale handles the environment and the region semi-final stage as they have not been here in a while and Grace has. If Grace runs Oakdale's shooters off the 3-point line and makes them take challenged 2's....... then I can see Grace having enough size to bother those shots. Smith will get his points for Oakdale, but can they knock down enough 3's to make it intersting.I think Grace will pull out the win by 8 points. It should be a fun night of region semi-finals action........ best of luck to all 4 teams! Better get there early, if you want to stand......if you want a seat get there by 5:00 PM.
  9. I agree, blaming officials for a game that is lost gets old........... but in this case the official made a huge mistake in making a 10 second violation call that can be checked by going back and looking at the clock.......... this is not like you are questioning a foul/non-foul call. There was 24.7 on the clock when Oakdale missed the front end of a one plus and when the official made the call there was 16.2 on the clock......... does not add up to 10 seconds then to compound the problem the officials went and reset the clock to 19.2 which makes no sense at all, so technically Jellico got a 10 second violation and 5 seconds ran off the clock (on top of the bad call, the other official hit the Jellico player with a T that was brought on by the bad call-official could have warned the player about slamming the ball down, and yes I know the rule about slamming the ball down warrants an automatic technical but I think the officials did not handle this very well considering the situation)........I'm not here to complain (I'm just stating my opinion because this web-site allows for opinions to be stated) because I don't have a dog in the hunt........... Jellico may not have scored but one thing is for certain we will never know because they didn't get the chance............ the official blew the call........... and I'm moving on with this subject. Best of Luck to all district 4 teams tuesday night.
  10. I was at the game and I thought the 10 second call was to quick........... I'm willing to bet that only 7 or 8 seconds had went by when the official made the 10 second call........... if someone has video that shows the clock and the official from a wide view I would love to see it. I have no idea if Jellico would have scored or not but they did not get a chance. I know one thing, if your an official you better be certain that 10 seconds have went by if you make that call. Most officials in that situation will count slow to keep from making that call with the game on the line. Kudos to Jellico for outplaying Oakdale (they only had 7 wins and could have easily threw in the towel going into the tournament but they knocked off OZ at OZ and played Oakdale to the wire, that's what makes basketball so fun that you get a second chance come tournament time)......... I'm sure many people thought that Oakdale would run Jellico off the floor. Oakdale got tight in the last four minutes and almost unraveled down the stretch. They will have to play better to knock off Wartburg on their home floor to secure a district championship. And to eaglesfan23 response about Jellico coach getting on officials, it's part of the game. Coaches work officials........sometimes it plays to their favor and sometimes it does not. I don't think anyone can blame Jellico's coach for being upset about the 10 second call if indeed it was less than 10 seconds and in my opinion it was less than 10 seconds.
  11. I've been to the Kentucky Boys State Tournament several times. The Tennessee State Tournament is not even close to the Kentucky State Tournament in terms of attendance and atmosphere. The Boys Tournament in Kentucky is called the Sweet 16 and played at Rupp Arena in Lexington...... Good crowds for all games and if the right teams make it you can see a crowd in the neighborhood of 20, 000 for a high school game. The KHSAA does a good job promoting the tournament but the sport itself sells high school basketball in that state where basketball is considered a religion. Tennessee will never catch up with Kentucky High School basketball just for the fact that basketball in that state is important to every school in the state. I will admit that the TSSAA needs to do a better job in promoting the event. The first thing they could do is move the tournament out of MTSU. (Horrible environment to host a state tournament) But if you move it somewhere else I'm not sure the attendance will ever improve since basketball in this state is not the main event. The city of Lexington supports their state tournament with alot of neutral fans attending the event. They just love their basketball in that state and tennessee does not so the attendance will not be there IMO.
  12. I think the best suggestion would be to never try to lose a game on purpose PERIOD!!! That would solve all problems.
  13. I don't see anyway any administrator will allow the games be played today or tonight. With the low temperatures for tonight, Friday games will be in jeopardy also. They may have to go to the format like Kentucky used to use in their state tournament semifinals and finals being played in one day. Play the semi-finals on Saturday morning at 10 & 1130 AM. Come back and play the championship at 8:00 that night. Or they could play the region championship on Sunday at 2:00. State sectionals are scheduled for Monday. Tough decisions will have to made with this situation.
  14. Maybe Riverdale's Principal or AD if they were present at the game should have stepped in immediately and stopped the type of play that was being used by their coach. If they set back and said nothing then maybe the director of schools need to look at replacing them also. They should have went to the locker room at halftime or between periods and informed the coach to stop the NONSENSE. I know Principals and AD's should let their coaches coach and stay out of the way but this situation called for immediate intervention, if they had I think both coaches may have survived this situation. Don't see anyway that these two coaches can continue as these schools.
  15. I still can't believe that an administrator (either Principal or AD) if they were at this game did not step in and stop that type of play immediately. If they were not at the game than a game administrator should have been assigned. Someone needs to check and see if both schools had game administrators present at this game as TSSAA requires of school. I'm assuming that had to be discussed when the TSSAA met with the principals of the two schools invovled. Maybe that is why the $1500 fine was enforced to both schools. I have no idea. But, if a game administrator was present and set back and did nothing then maybe the director of schools need to look at having these people replaced. I don't see anyway possible that these two schools can move forward with these two coaches staying on board. The right thing to do would be for these two coaches to step down immediately and the two schools can move forward trying to restore order and respectability back to their girls basketball programs. Just because you have success does not mean that a coach is above the game. I bet they both wish they could go back and hit the reset button on that consolation game. Don't blame the TSSAA for the tournament format. This has been in place for many years so everyone involved understood what was at stake. You can not and should not put players in this situation period.
  16. Both coaches should do the right thing and step down and move on. There is no way either can move forward at these schools with this situation hanging over their head. Respect has been lost for both coaches involved. Not sure they can move the programs forward in a positive direction. This situation will tarnish both schools for years to come. I think it would be smart for both schools to cut their losses now and move forward trying to find coaches in their programs.
  17. I personally think the Riverdale coach will end up resigning his position as Head Basketball Coach over this situation. Not sure by him staying around will be the best situation for that program. I bet the two coaches involved wish they could go back and hit the reset button before that consolation game begin. This situation blew up big time on these two schools. I still can believe they did this and made it so obvious what they were doing. I guess the coaches felt they were above the game, boy did they get fooled.
  18. No official word yet. But, I would say Quarter-finals will be played on Friday- Semi-Finals on Saturday and Finals on Monday as Sectionals are scheduled on Tuesday. I really see no other schedule unless the TSSAA steps in and moves boys sectional date. Gonna be interesting to see the level of play from the long lay off. Most teams have not played in 2 weeks. Oakdale has only played 1 game in the past three weeks. We shall see. It should be interesting to say the least. I think most teams missed the boat by not playing on Tuesday.
  19. Meigs played well enough last night to beat Jellico comfortably on their home floor. They came out early and took the fight to Jellico winning the boards and loose ball situations to get out of the gate quickly and Jellico could never recover. Bowlin for Jellico helped keep the game somewhat respectable. The defender for Meigs that guarded Bowlin did a good job at contesting his 3 point jump shots (I think he only hit 1 the whole night) Meigs will be a tough out in the region especially if they are hitting the 3 ball. They are hard to guard in man because it is very difficult to keep them in front of you and they can finish or kick out to the open 3 area. They had good ball movement last night against Jellico's 1-3-1 zone with good skip passes across the zone to create open looks or drive opportunities. I really don't see Oakdale or Harriman taking them out in the semis unless they shoot lights out from the outside. I think it will take 8 or more 3's made to have a chance. But, this is high school basketball so you never know and that's why they play the games. Good luck to Meigs in the remainder of the region tournament.
  20. Schedule is set: Girls Consolation at 2:00 PM Coalfield vs Wartburg- Girls Championship- 3:30 PM Oliver Springs vs Oneida- Boys Consolation- Jellico vs Oliver Springs- Boys Championship- 6:30 PM Coalfield vs Oakdale. All games on Saturday. Picks- Coalfield over Wartburg by 6- Oliver Springs over Oneida by 9- Jellico over Oliver Springs by 7- Oakdale over Coalfield by 4. It's been a long lay off, so play'em out and let the chips fall where they fall.

    3A semis set!

If anyone thinks that private and public schools are playing on a level playing field they are out of touch with reality. If you think it is bad in the revenue sports, it's even more difficult on public schools in the non-revenue sports. Private schools dominate the non-revenue sports such as volleyball, cross-country, tennis, & golf in the Class A/AA division. Privates should not be allowed to participate with Public in these sports period. They have way to many advantages over public school students in these sports (private lessons, trainers, club teams, etc) that most public school students will not have. I was at the Girls Class A/AA Cross Country Region 2 meet this past fall and the top 14 finishers, 12 were from private schools. Only 2 public school runners were in the top 14, one finishing 7th the other 11th. By the way, the one that finished 11th did not qualify to run in the state meet as only the top 10 individual finishers qualify and came from a public school that probably will never have another runner finish that high again thus denying a chance to run in a state meet. In non-revenue sports privates should not participate with publics in tournament play......... if you have a split here then yes the playing field is leveled IMO.
  22. Do not see any way games will be played Thursday or Friday night for the tournament. Record low temperatures will keep the snow and ice around through Friday. Looks like best case will be Saturday as the temperature is supposed to be in the low 40s with rain which should melt away the snow and ice. They could play the girls games during the day say 1 & 230 and play the boys games that evening say 6 & 730. We shall see...... I really hope they get a chance to play the games and not go to seeding but Saturday will be the last day to play anything in the District. Region starts on Monday.

    3A semis set!

I agree.. Whoever gets Jellico will be challenged...... Their point guard Bowlin is a player and will keep them in the game for the most part...... but I think either Meigs or Grace will pull out the win against Jellico....... Could you imagine if Meigs or Grace had Bowlin on their team with what each has as supporting cast ...... They both could very well make it to state.....but with him they would be a lock......Zy at 2 guard would be nasty and Bowlin running the point at Grace would make their whole team better. Hey, it's fun to imagine.....Lol
  24. ZOA9

    3A semis set!

You are correct they do still have to play OZ for 3rd place..... both games between the two were very close and competitive with Jellico winning both. Should be a good game between the two but I do believe Jellico will pull it out. I heard that game will be played Friday night....weather pending.
  25. Revised District Tournament Schedule Thursday- Girls Consolation & Girls Championship Friday- Boys Consolation & Boys Championship Could be tough to play these if we get more snow that is predicted for Wednesday and the record low temperatures........ I would say Jellico & Oneida will have a tough time traveling..... they got hit the hardest with the snow and ice........... Hope they get to settle it on the court and not by seeding for region placement......... We shall see.
