  1. Northside Indians seem to be improving. Got lots of talent and some size. Maybe they can give Haywood a good game. Just came from three scores back to best SG. What happened there ? Milan schedule looks like more trouble. Hot Seat ?
  2. Thanks. I know there are many. I remember some back to the 1960's. Just read on Odom's twitter that Fayette Ware game tonight will be closed (no attendance allowed).
  3. I attended a game at Haywood once. Maybe 1977. College friend was JCM grad and fb player. JCM had just been state runnerup previous season. He wanted me to see JCM win over Haywood. JCM had a ballyhooed tailback. Maybe name of Butler. Well the star of the game was the Haywood tailback, Darryl Bowles. Signed with Arkansas and HFC Lou Holtz. See that Lewis is commited to Razorbacks. Any other Haywood players go to Arkansas. Remember some playing at Mississippi State and Tennessee.
  4. Are they the new beast from the west ? Will they compete with Summit/Oakland/ Maryville for gold ?
  5. Mirror Exchange sportswriter Michael Odom usually gives frequent updates on twitter.
  6. Adamsville did not field a football team in years 1964 thru 1969. Tommy transferred to Selmer High for I think his jr and sr years and played football there. Selmer High Class of 69.
  7. Being reported on facebook that he passed today at his home. Former HFC at Adamsville, Hardin Co., McNairy Central, and Long Beach, Ms., also OC at Scotts Hill and currently OC at USJ.
  8. Larry Fry was one of the first two AA players to suit up for the MSU Bulldogs in 1972. Perry Wallace from 1966 champ N Pearl was the first AA player in the SEC at Vanderbilt while his teammate Ted McClain starred at Tenn State and went on to a pro career in the NBA and ABA.
  9. 1971 Lexington team with 6'5" Larry Fry held 6'11" David Vaughn Jr to 8 points in the championship game but losing 50 to 56 while Fry scored 15 per the TSSAA archives. Vaughn had scored 45 points in the 1st round victory over Melrose. Fry went on to be 3 yr starter at Mississippi State averaging 13.8 pts and 8.1 reb over 78 games. Vaughn had been commited to Memphis State where he would join the duo from the 1969 Melrose team, Larry Finch and Ronnie Robinson. Vaughn did a late switch to sign with the overnight success Oral Roberts University but he did marry Finch's sister. Memphis State then acquired the services of junior college player Larry Kenon. David Vaughn III did end up playing for his uncle HBC Larry Finch at Memphis. Fry became a high school principal at Grenada, Ms.
  10. State runner-up teams were : 1926 Memphis Central, 1929 Halls, 1930 Memphis Central, 1942 Milan, 1951 Selmer, 1952 Jackson High, 1953 Memphis Central, 1960 Union City, 1966 Memphis Treadwell, 1970, Memphis Melrose, and 1971 Lexington. Bill McClain from the 1951 Selmer team went on to be a long time coach at Memphis Treadwell. His 1966 Treadwell team was runner-up to the great undefeated Nashville Pearl team featuring Perry Wallace and Ted McClain. Larry Fry starred on the 1971 Lexington team which lost to Nashville Cameron featuring the seven footer David Vaughn.
  11. From 1921 thru 1972 TSSAA crowned an overall champion. Few teams from the West were successful. State champs from the West were : 1928 Purdy, 1931 Chester County, 1932 Ramer, 1938 Whitehaven, 1949 Humboldt, and 1952 Selmer. That is six champs in 48 years since no tournament was held for 1933, 34, 35, and 36, during the "Great Depression". Three of those champs were from McNairy County. Two of the champs had undefeated seasons : Purdy at 32 - 0 and Humboldt at 44 - 0. Future Chicago Bear Hall of Fame football player Doug Atkins played on that Humboldt team. There is a great picture of that Humboldt team on the TSSAA site in their basketball tourney archives.
  12. Have been told in years past that Lexington always treats visiting team that way. Denies entry to press box.
  13. The TE back then was a 3 yr starter, 4 yr letterman for UT Vols and got a ring in 98, local banker now.
  14. I think Decaturville High and Parsons High consolidated to become Riverside in 1965 per this site, AHSFHS.org.
  15. Yes to the continuation of bowls for a few years. Playoffs began with 4 teams in each class. Went to eight in 72. Then 16 in about 76.
  16. Playoffs began in fall of 1969. A, AA, AAA
  17. Back then I believe Selmer, Savannah, Henderson were in Volununteer conference. Name changes came later. I think W Tn had Volunteer, Big 10, and Reelfoot Conferences.
  18. Gleason has a big junior 6 ft 4 in 320 lb lineman, bench presses 350 lbs. Looks like he might have a future.
  19. FYI : Former McNairy QB Cole Kirk saw his first playing time as a collegiate athlete in mop up duty for Delta State in their season opening 48 - 14 victory over Bethel. stats : 11 of 14 122 yds 1 td 0 int
  20. McNairy played Waverly once before in second round of 1994 playoffs. Losing 28 - 14 to end at 9 - 3 in T. Browder's sixth season as HFC.
  21. Year after year SG is the most disciplined, best coached, and hardest working team in West TN. They almost always have just enough talent.
  22. and Pearl Cohn just last week defeated MBA.
  23. Also : Steele Haynes, USJ, 5-11, 185, sr, had 232 yds against UC. Also had a lot of yards against Goodpasture but not sure of the number. Big strong OL at USJ.
