  1. Ken Mara is one of the evaluators. Ken had consistently called at the highest level of our sport (NCAAs) and was chosen to call the finals of the NCAAs for many many years. I am not sure you can find anyone more qualified to be an evaluator, and certainly not with his resume. But using this current thread as evidence, this is a rule book issue and was brought forward because the rule was not understood by someone that is not required to take the rules book test or even read it. I think its good these things come out here and can be discussed and lead to some understanding.
  2. This is why you wrestle the matches
  3. Why didnt the officials begin to call unsportsmanlike conduct and issue TFouls on one bench then the other until the coaches realized they were ultimately going to get tossed out of the game? That would cost the school money and the coaches dates on the bench (I would think).

  5. No comments? Who was there? What did you see?
  6. It is confusing. If a kid makes 120 on Friday, he qualifies for 120 or 125. On Saturday he must make 120 and cannot be moved up to 125 if he does not, if he is overweight.for the 120# class. He is essentially out of the dual tournament.
  7. Hat tip Andrew Hedges Minus injured Devin Carter, No. 9 Virginia Tech fends off No. 12 UVa in wrestlingCollege wrestling took center stage at the Moss Arts Center on Sunday.
  8. Unsportsmanlike can be called at almost anytime by any official. If three mats are operating and an official observes a wrestler or coach demonstrating such behavior to warrant unsportsmanlike on another mat it can be called. With regard to the incident in question here (Summit), changes can be made in an individual match in a dual or tournament before the next match begins. In a situation such as the Summit incident it would have to be addressed within 30 minutes of the conclusion of wrestling of the dual. It is my understanding that the Summit coaches indicated they had addressed this with the referees of the match. I CAN ASSURE YOU THEY DID NOT. WITHOUT QUESTION THAT DID NOT HAPPEN. I would welcome this to be addressed in the case by anyone with Summit or that coaching staff if they read this board. At this point it sounds as if their lack of clarity on their match with Tullahoma is creating some cya among the coaching staff perhaps. It this is not the case and they recognize there was no attempt made to raise the issue with any of the match referees, I extend my apologies to their staff. In the above post, elements of an individual match in an individual tournament it must be addressed before the wrestlers and coaches leave the scorers table where the match was wrestled. Once the wrestlers and coaches leave that area, it cannot be addressed. In a dual meet or dual tournament if there is a clerical or correctable error it must be corrected with in 30 minutes of the end of wrestling.

  11. Wrestling is one of the few sports that measures itself (individuals) as it does. It is the sport with in the sport that many people dont see. When officiating the duals, you watch the coaches. Suddenly that flip of the disk at the beginning of the match means something. Each coach knows what he has to have out of each weight class to win. If a kid gives up a major rather than a tech fall or a fall that is a huge gain in the matches we watched this weekend. You see some kids sent out as sacrificial lambs. Coach has -6 penciled in, but if that kid can go six minutes it might become a +1. Or a + 2 if he is only majored. The unimaginable a +3 with a reversal or escape at the end to keep it less than eight points now the coach has cushion he didnt have before. I love talking to prospective wrestling parents (middle school moms and dads) about the sport in this context. Their kid has decided to wrestle. " What? Yeah mom I'm going to wrestle," and you can see the fear over the mom's face. "He's little and couldnt possibly contribute." Oh yes he can. Its one of the few sports when a personal loss can still be a gain for your team. (stepping off my soapbox)
  12. You are familiar with the point system in wrestling and terms such as bonus points? You understand these in context? You have just been enlightened.
  13. if anyone gets a link to the match, post it please!
  14. I think you are going to find that the air handlers they put in these arenas are massive and are designed to treat the air while rodeo events are going on will be more effective with a covered floor during a wrestling tournament. The thought of what I hear being done versus what is actually being done generally far apart. No one is going to accept an air test that isnt conducted by an outside source that would likely test hospital clean air rooms or at least on that level. I hear rumors of air effects, but nothing substantiated. If you move to any arena that can provide the logistics (mats) you will be far from the action. It is a much much better situation for the officials and staff to run the event. That wont get better moving to another arena. I would be in favor of bringing in small bleachers closer to the mat for people that want to pay an up charge for that privilege. I wouldnt mind seeing some of those dome lights some wrestling venues use to spotlight the mats. Sometimes those things create more problems but I think that could be overcome. Showers would be a nice addition. I completely agree here. Now again the issue is the arena is being donated for free. That means the arena people, nor the county, make any revenue from the event. I cant see any negotiating leverage with the arena to make those renovations, it doesnt make sense. You might possibly get them to consider showers as other events would likely consider that a positive reason to come and rent the arena. The surrounding area (cool springs ) merchants might have a bit more at stake. Does anyone know of the economic impact to the community? it was a pretty big deal when the Dual State moved out of Clarksville because of that. Probably some impact on Chattanooga when the individuals went to the AG center. Nashville likely didnt notice. Franklin and Brentwood might. I think the consideration is to help fix what you dont like rather than trying to find a competing venue for free. I just dont see that happening.
  15. Rather than complain about the AG center, why not take what you feel is the issue and make it into a place wrestling would be proud to be there?
  16. There are a lot of different methods (styles) when indicating a pin so its hard to determine. The rules book says two count. That has to happen in my head. Thousand one thousand two. To some from lower LA this presents a challenge both in counting to two and understanding the concept of a thousand. Some officials no longer "slap" the mat but when a pin appears imminent they will lay their hand on the mat simultaneously blow the whistle and raise their hand from the mat indicating a pin. Ideally you would like to indicate it by extending your hand on thousand one and having your hand hit the mat on thousand two. Ideally. If you extend your hand on thousand one and pull it back because the should came up every time, the ref will spend a lot of time 'splainin' at the scorers table. One thing I know, I HAVE to see it. No assumptions, no guessing. I am likely considered a slow pin ref, but it has to be there so you arent taking anything away from either kid. My money would be if Jake didnt call it, it wasnt there.
