i just want to know how everybody thinks portland stacks up to the rest of class 4a  and to the teams of the past

Portland looks good...size, speed, BUT could have very easily lost to the Bears. MJ gave y'all a great game - hitting was outstanding (both sides)...MJ will be a factor in the region playoff picture.

Portland's kicker impressed me.

Would love a rematch! How about you?

Portland will win Region 6-4A because it is a terrible region. Mt. Juliet, Springfield, and Beech will be the other three playoff teams in the region and all of the Clarksville schools in the region are just horrible.

Region 5-4A has about six teams that could beat Portland on any given night I am sorry to have to say. Whites Creek may be the best team in 4A. Maplewood is not far behind them right now with wins over PC and Tullahoma and soon to be added a win over McGavock. Stratford is 2-2 and they have probably won more games than any other 4A team in the state the past two years. Tullahoma beat Hillsboro and both of those teams are playoff possibilties in a very strong region. Lawrence Co. is 4-1 and with a split in their next four games, then a season finale against lowly Shelbyville, the Wildcats would be a playoff team in all likelyhood.

Portland may be the ONLY team from Region 6-4A playing in the second week of November. If Perry gets them beyond that round I will be amazed

I remember a classic championship game with Portland. Not that many years ago. It was Purple vs. Purple. Now you guys are 4A and we are 2A. Your program seem to be very sucessful over a long period of time? Is the coaching staff the same as in 1999?

the coaching staff is pretty much the same we did lose to really good coaches after the 2002 season but other than that it's the same oh yea we also have perry's son coaching.

Portland is a great team and they have always had a great team. They will do good until the playoffs come. They have always choked in the big games the last couple of years.

Yeah, Portland has really choked it up in the playoffs. They have been in the final sixteen teams 11 years in a row, with an awful playoff record of 27-12 (with five of those twelve losses to state champions) since 1990 and an even worse home playoff record of 17-2. Portland has really choked it up....

It just seems to me the last 2 or 3 years they have chocked when it came to games that matter against all the top teams in the regions and in the playoffs to smith county. they had that game won last year and just let it slip through their fingers. and the year before that they just got pounded on by the owls. im not sayin back in the day they choked. but i am just sayin recently

Hey catfish-hunter, i bet you right now 1 of the clarksville teams will make it to the playoffs! Dont know who, but we aren't all that bad! We beat a very good henry co team, and the 22-7 loss to mcgavock was a lot closer than the score! so dont count all of us out, dude! Against beech we had 2 or 3 chances to score in the first have and just did not put it in, does that makes us horrible? Give me a break! Defense is only allowing 13 points a game! Our games against portland, Mt Juliet, Clarksville, springfield and rossview will be all close games! but the last 2 weeks we have proven we can find a way to win! Lets hope we can continue that the rest of the year! Whatcha got to say about that?!

Kenwood is 4A????? I thought you guys were a 5A bunch. Sorry for that error and in that case I'll change my mind and say Kenwood takes one of the top four spots in the region. I saw Kenwood play in the jamboree and you guys were impressive against a solid team. Here you go Coach Mac:

1.) Portland

2.) Beech

3.) Kenwood

4.) Mt. Juliet

5.) Springfield

6.) Clarksville

7.) Rossview

8.) Northwest

    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
    • An FYI: To see how an opponent has done against another opponent since 2001- go to the game by clicking on one of the teams. Click the G beside the game. For example, Milan: The info will show you the previous matchups and other info.
    • All these college signees went yo other schools for 3 years, were getting college offers then transferred to Bearden. It’s not like this staff did much to develop them.    The BBall coaches son and the Seymour transfer were some of the most talented QBs in the region, and you guys developed them into QBs who might complete one pass a game.
