any new info out there in regards to finding a coach for cocke county. i would think that they have at least interviewed a few by now. if anyone out there knows anything updates us.....

i have heard rumors that a coach will not be signed until the end of this school year due to the lack of teaching vacancies, dont know if there is any truth to this or not but i have heard it several times. starting to think it might be true since no names are out there. hope its not though because it would be nice for the kids at school to have a reason to play football at cocke county

The teaching positions part is true. There aren't any teaching vacancies at CCHS that I know of.

When Coach Jones resigned as head football coach, he was still under contract as a teacher at the school, and being a tenured faculty member, there's nothing they can do.

However, I'm not quiet sure if that would affect the hiring, or not. If I can recall, when Marty Euverard took the Jeff County job when Meadows bolted for William Blount in Feb. 2004 - Euverard got the job in March or early April of that year, remained at Oakland, but still conducted spring ball for the Patriots. I'm not 100-percent sure of that, but I think that did happen.

The reason I think there aren't many names out there, is because not many (any??) applicants probably aren't from the East Tennessee area.

Rumors in this town are a dime a dozen - but I heard the interviews were delayed again. It's pretty disappointing when this process keeps getting delayed by the central office.

wow!!!!!!!!!!!! interesting. i have to say i am surprised by all this. i understand your conserns about the process taking so long. waiting till end of year could be a hugh mistake setting back cocke co. in a major way. splitback has a great consern. imagine waiting till sometime this summer to get the players ready for football. heck you all know what a job it is to get the players to do anything here during the summer. surly they are not going to put if off that long. teaching positions? jones was hired and did not have a job opening. stories i heard had him helping out here and there and sweeping the gym floor till the next year when he had actual classes. weight lifting at that. whished i had that schedual. now money this where the other problem will take place. i cant see how any coach outside this county or state want take a considerable pay cut to come here and coach. now double dipping is an option. there you are looking at an older guy retiring and then getting work here in this state. well i guess we can just keep listening close and keeping us updated. later guys

Per article in Newport Plain Talk:

Athletic Director Larry Williams announced yesterday that

out of some 30 to 35 applications, they have narrowed

that number to seven. Those seven candidates will be

interviewed through next week beginning today. Although

names have not been released, Coach Williams says that

of the seven candidates, one comes from Middle

Tennessee, another from Kentucky, three from Georgia

and two from South Carolina.

The interviews are being conducted by Coach Williams,

School Board member Ken Johnson, CCHS Principal Gary

Williams, and CCHS Assistant Principal Dennis Balch.

Coach Williams says they hope to narrow the field to two

to three finalists by the end of next week, and hope to

name the new head coach by the end of the month.

The new coach will replace Wes Jones, who resigned just

days after the close of this past football season, a season

that saw the Fighting Cocks go just 1-and-9.

i heard today that the guy from south carolina who was the leading candidate has declined the job because he wanted more money. dont know who the other candidates still left are

Thats not a surprise.

You have good coaches in this county leaving for other reasons + more money these days.

Coach Flatford left at Cosby due to family reasons; but Cosby Principal/AD was quoted that the county does not pay coaches enough.

Coach Taylor left CCHS baseball; partly due to his alma mater and family job @ Clinton being open. But, I'm sure he's making more money there, than here.

    • And can you tell me who those two quarterbacks were, and every kid that was put into college from Bearden is a Bearden kid? It’s kind of why they graduated from Bearden.   and I would definitely not consider ETSU “waste”…
    • Most of this is complete gibberish. But the one part I could decipher is putting kids in college. This coaching staff hasn’t put a single Bearden kid in college. They completed wasted one of the best WRs in East TN and have ruined two talented QBs. All because they’re in over their heads.
    • Well, I’d hope the new coaching staff thinks they are all that because they can always walk around the school, anytime they want, thinking that, especially for what they’ve done for the student athletes and the players, putting more kids in college in his first season than the old coaching staff did in numerous years combined, but we will just sweep over that because I know you don’t like facts. But trust me, nobody wanted Mr. Big britches, made the star player switch to quarterback, which is ultimately the reason he ended up transferring to play the position. He loved, but unfortunately, had to be at another school because Mr. Big Britches doesn’t like when a teenager knows more than him, but can’t expect much coming from a guy who used all class throwing pencils up into the ceiling and making fun of football kids who were failing class right to their face, and in front of numerous students, even projecting on the board most of the time.
    • After that first paragraph, I can see why you’re a TA and not a teacher. Have you made the move from South Knoxville to Bearden yet?    Maybe he left because he is an actual teacher and coach, and didn’t want to be associated with a group of foul mouthed middle school coaches who like to pretend they’re big time.
    • Yeah and the coach is gone. Whole bizarre situation here. We played them a couple of times at MTSU last few years. She was a player for sure.
