BBBest's 5A Top Ten

So, another look at the top ten teams in 5A after the second week of the playoffs. I know there are those who are going to say that Hunters Lane should be in the top ten, because they are still in the playoffs, but I just don't think so, and they will be out of it after this week, because Ravenwood is probably going to beat them anyway. And even if they do beat Ravenwood, then Ravenwood would drop out because of five losses (I don't think that will happen).

1. Ooltewah -- 12-0

2. Riverdale -- 11-1

3. Smyrna -- 10-2

4. White Station -- 11-1

5. Wooddale -- 10-2

6. Farragut -- 9-3

7. Ravenwood -- 8-4

8. Ridgeway -- 11-1

9. Dobyns-Bennett -- 10-1

10. Gallatin -- 11-1

Logically speaking, the poll is invalid.

Why? You can use that logic on Hunters Lane being out of the rankings because they are still in the playoff therefore they cannot be ranked lower than 8th.

One of the following teams will be out of the play off after this week.

Farragut or Ooltewah

Riverdale or Smyrna

White Station or Wooddale

• Hunter Lane or Ravenwood

Since Farragut, Ooltewah, Riverdale, or Smyrna will be out of the playoff in two weeks, one of these teams should be #1 or 2. The same will be for White Station, Wooddale, Hunters Lane, and Ravenwood. One of these teams should be #1 or 2 in the rankings. After this week, only two teams can be rank #3 & 4 with the rest being ranked 5 through 8.

At this time of the year, the poll should reflect as the opinion of “Last Teams Standing” on the way to the championship game. It needs tweak each week as the results come in. According to the rankings, it’s Ooltewah and Riverdale. That’s impossible. If you believe it’s possible, then the poll listed is valid.

Personally, I couldn’t care less about the polls. This is high school ball. They don’t handout any awards for teams less than #1. Playoffs exist unlike Division 1 College football popularity contest.

Ravenwood went through this last year. They were never ranked 1st during the entire season but finished #1 on the field of play. Rank or un-rank, it doesn’t matter. Playing the game on the field and moving into the next round of the playoff is all that matters.

Polls express statistical analyses and opinions. But you can't say they are invalid, any more than your conclusions are invalid. I certainly respect your opinion, but both your opinion and this poll are of equal value.

I would say the value of the poll is to discuss the pros and cons of who is the best team in the state. Right now, Ooltewah is the last 5A team undefeated and Riverdale has not been beaten by any 5A team. So, they are logically the best two teams in the state. I agree the final championship will be played on the field, but it still makes it interesting when you try to determine final rankings by the end of the year.

As some of these teams lose this week. The one loss teams will find themselves moving up in the top ten poll, but they will never have the chance to be state champions.

I believe Ravenwood's experience from a year ago, will make them a team to reckon with in the state, while Hunters Lane seems to have just gotten hot at the right time. It won't matter because Ravenwood will probably finish them off next Friday anyway. It's a little bit of a toss up between Smyrna, White Station and Wooddale, but I think their is logic for placing them even in this order.

So, even your logic supports the logic of the poll.

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
