Bernard Childress spoke at the MTSCA clinic at Riverdale last Sat. I asked him if the 50% rule applied to summer baseball, softball, basketball, etc. He said that the 50% rule only applied when schools were in session. Fall basbeball and softball would be affected, Fall soccer for boys and spring soccer for girls would be affected and AAU basketball would be affected in the spring. It did not apply to summer teams, unless they made it to a national tournament and school started back in session. Although he said he was not sure how that situation would be handled. If a team had over 50% from one HS roster then the coach of that school would have to decide which athlete was ineligable.

    • TSSAA restrictions for hiring non-faculty coaches have been removed for over a year at this point. In the past a non-faculty person had to be "grandfathered" by being an assistant coach for five years, being fingerprinted, and having a background check run per TSSAA rules... since those were rescinded, the board of directors for the school district are responsible for any/all restrictions on hiring non-faculty personnel. I guess what I'm saying to you is that if you really wanted what you posted, it's already possible as long as your local BOE will allow for it.
