10U All State Team

Most 10 year olds who one would consider "all state" as you put it don't play on 10U teams. They play up in 11U and possibly 12U for better competition.

That's not necessarily true. There are a number of outstanding 10 year old girls who play in the 10U age group. Playing up doesn't automatically make someone a better athlete. You could argue that there is more competition (although I have seen 10 year old teams who beat 11 year old teams on a regular basis, and can compete with the 12s - where's the competition there?), but you also may sacrifice playing time by playing up an age group. I would also argue that a 10 year old playing up would find it more difficult to stand out. You can't make a generalization that "most" who would be considered play up. If we are naming a 10U "All-State" team, let's stick with those who play in the 10U age group.

Don't get me wrong BallerZ. I wish girls or boys couldn't play up at all. Maybe my wording was wrong, I was just saying that alot of talented boys and girls (and some that are not) feel the need to play in older age groups because they (or their parents) don't feel challenged. You are right about not standing out. I saw a couple of players this year that were dominant last year and decided to play up this year and they seemed to have taken a step back and didn't look like they had improved at all. Probably because as you say, their practice time as well as playing time was reduced because they were playing up. I didn't mean it to sound like there were no good ten year olds, but I guess that is how it sounded once I read my own post. Sorry.

Thanks for clarifying. I just wanted to make sure we didn't discount the girls who play in their own age groups - as statewide I have seen some really good teams and talented girls in the 10U program. As was said, there are some 10s who can more than hang with the 11s. And there are probably some who are playing up who shouldn't be there. I guess it will all sort out once they start playing school ball - where there are multiple grades on one team.

I don't have a child playing, but years ago when I did, I liked the AAU tournaments so I could see how my child and her team stacked up against players her OWN age. Just being a fan of the game and taking in a few tournaments a year that doesn't always seem to be the case anymore. I would like to see kids required to play based on their age until they hit 12 or 13. Just my opinion, but Middle school is soon enough to play against older players. 12U teams should be worried more about learning the fundamentals of the game than winning.

Why in the world are we even discussing this? The kids are 10 years old! Who can project what they are going to be like when they get to middle school much less in high school. Just let them play ball and forget about all of this "All State" crap.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it sounds as if Sassy just wanted someone to mention her daughter, probably an outstanding player for the age group, or to be able to respond with a "what about Little Jenny from Team X" when little Jenny wasn't mentioned.

You couln't be more wrong Jack! This is IMPORTANT!! I have spent the last month traveling to tournaments and watching kids play. I think I have at least 10 names for the "All-State" list and the clubs they play for. I have spent many hours and much $$ to put together this list so please think before you respond.
