before the season begins every year marshall county is the top pick to knock off lipscomb and be a state championship contender YET they never do and last year they didnt even make the playoffs.....everyone was saying the same stuff last year as they are this year and like i said they werent that great last year....seems to me like they're all hype

It's kind of similar to the old saying "potential is a scary thing". Despite the failures in recent years it is a fact that Marshall Co. does have the talent to beat anyone in the region. Despite all of this talent they also have to prove that they are worthy to folks around the region. IT IS A TWO-WAY STREET!!!!

 

Coach Don Thomas is a guy who I have heard nothing but great things about him since he came to Lewisburg from LaVergne. Also though when you look he is a coach that has never been beyond the second round of the playoffs. It is true that LaVergne was playing the likes of Riverdale, Smyrna, Lincoln Co., & Cookeville in the early rounds of the playoffs though and the competition level will drop from that level no question about it. Does Marshall Co. have the talent that LaVergne did?????? Who honestly knows??????

 

The previous two coaches at Marshall Co. had great reputations before their arrivals to Lewisburg. Mac McCurry was the head coach at Moore Co. when they were one of the elite football programs in the state year in and year out. He had two terrific seasons at Marshall Co. in 2000 & 2002 guiding the program to the quarterfinals each year. Outside of that I would have to say that his tenure at Marshall Co. was a disappointment (ESPECIALLY IN THE PLAYOFFS). The 2002 postseason ended in a very disappointing way and really set up the beginning of the end for Mac in Lewisburg when Marshall Co. lost to Crockett Co. in the quarterfinals by a final score of 45-0. The '00 loss in the quarterfinals was just a classic battle that saw the Tigers come up short against JSS by a final score of 7-6. William Johnson came in from Stratford where he took the Spartans to the quarterfinals and to the second round of the playoffs in his two years as head coach at the Metro/Nashville school. NOW SOME OF THOSE WINS WERE LATER PROVEN TO BE ILLEGAL HOWEVER UPON HIS HIRING NOTHING WAS PROOF THAT HE "CHEATED". Johnson's first year saw a team loaded with potential just sneak into the playoffs thanks in large part to shootout wins over Page, Spring Hill, & Giles Co. That year, 2005, the Tigers were really embarrassed in losses to David Lipscomb, Cheatham Co., and in the playoffs to Lexington (who they actually beat the year before in Mac McCurry's final win as the head football coach at MCHS). Last year just about everyone returned for Marshall Co. from the 2005 playoff team. Despite some struggles the Tigers did start off good in the region last year with wins over Spring Hill & Creek Wood. Following a really ugly loss at Greenbrier and a home loss to Page not to mention a really really really ugly loss to Clarksville the wheels fell off of the Marshall Co. bandwagon in the second half of the season. Cheatham Co. & David Lipscomb crushed the Tigers and really put them from being a region title contender to a team on the outside of the playoff picture looking in. Marshall Co. did win over Montgomery Central to keep the playoff hopes alive heading into the final week of the season HOWEVER in week ten the Tigers were in a game that pretty much summed up their entire season in a nutshell. They got off to a hot start and were winning against Giles Co. but then Giles attacked their vulnerable run defense (AS DID EVERYONE ELSE) and in the end it became too much as Giles went on to enjoy later success in the playoffs while their region rivals were watching the playoffs from the bleachers WITHOUT A HEAD FOOTBALL COACH!!!!

 

I do not know how the Don Thomas Era will go in Lewisburg in all honesty. It may be one that sees a state championship trophy come to Marshall Co. It may be exactly the same as the last two coaches. NOBODY KNOWS AS OF YET & THIS IS WHY THE GAMES ARE PLAYED!!!!!!
