Goodpasture to Host Hickman County

Stating facts is not crying.

I predict next year some assortment of Goodpasture, Alcoa, CPA and DCA will be in the final 4 of 2A football. Same goes for the year after that as well. Probably the year after that too. The only thing that can stop it from happening is making some of them play each other in the same bracket.

Some of that is tradition. Some of it is 'attracting' superior athletes. That's a disadvantage to the closed zone public no matter how you slice it. Harpeth Middle beat Goodpasture Middle in 2006 30-6. I'll bet the 2010 Goodpasture team will bear little resemblance to the 2006 middle school team, but the Harpeth High team will be almost identical. How's that not a disadvantage?

All it takes is a running back or a wide out or a quarterback or a linebacker. 2 or 3 guys can make a difference.

Actually the 2010 team will be very much like the 2006 team - mostly the same personnel. What will definitely be the same is the coaching. This is one of the perks of any "attached" school. Believe me, many of the players have been there for years, benefiting from a unified coaching staff. Of course, every year there could be 2-3 students which enter their freshman year because of the school's rep. But these are the exception. It's true 1-2 stars can make a difference. But, that applies to all teams, from all schools.

One of the thing that does set Harpeth (and Hickman) apart from Goodpasture is that you are guaranteed to have students and Goodpasture isn't. As a result, Goodpasture works HARD year after year to be a place that is attractive to those interested in academics, arts, band, athletics, science, service, and religion. They have found that they cannot be a one-dimensional school (e.g. athletics) and survive in todays current competitive market (for private schools).

However, to boost their athletics they have done what others have suggested the west division schools do. Play tougher schedules. Even in this risky time, in 2A, of teams with the better records going on to the playoffs, Goodpasture scheduled two 5A teams, one 3A team and a Div II team. No padding the schedule there. Next year will be harder for all teams (in 2A) to schedule "up" because of not wanting to jeopardize their chances at making the playoffs. But this is a very useful means of improving a team's play. Stretch yourselves for a few years and see if it doesn't help. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />
