Who would have thought this would have happened a year ago? I would have never thought that Union Co would be ranked higher than Claiborne Co by coachT. This has to be the first time in these rankings. Does anyone know who and where this new coach who has made this team competitive came from? Also has G-P become the team to beat in this district?

Union Co.'s new coach is Roger Murphy. Prior to coming to Tennessee, Murphy was part of the coaching staff at Adams State College of Alamosa, Colorado for three years, and served as an assistant at Neosho County Community College Of Chanute, Kansas for two years.

A native of Cheyenne, Wyo. and a graduate of Central High School, Murphy began his collegiate career playing basketball for two years at Western Wyoming College in Rock Springs, Wyo. He moved on to NCAA Division III Manchester College of North Manchester, Ind., where he also played. He then returned to his home state and completed his bachelor??™s degree in physical education at the University of Wyoming in December of 1998. He completed coursework towards his master??™s degree at ASC in health and physical education.

Before going to Neosho, Murphy spent one year as an elementary teacher and as the J.V. girls??™ basketball coach on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Many Farms, Ariz.

Murphy came to Maynardville via marriage to his wife Carmen, who also teaches in the Union County system. He taught PE at Horace Maynard Middle School and coached the middle school girls team for two years before accepting the job at Union Co. High School in the summer of 2007.

And, to answer your other question: YES, at this point at least I would have to say that most people consider Gatlinburg-Pittman the team to beat in the district.
