TN Stars 14u in AAU Natl's

The Tennessee Stars 14u team won both of their pool games on Saturday in the 14u AAU National Championship in Rochester, Minnesota! Their first victory was over Minnesota North Tartan by a final score of 78-57 and their second victory was over the Arkansas Kamikaze by a final score of 89-48.

 

In the victory over North Tartan, the Stars were led by Cait McMahan (Heritage HS) and Holly Rogers (Cleveland HS) with 13 points each. Suzanne Morris (Walker Valley HS) had 12 and Whitney Sells (Livingston Academy) had 11. Tiffany Rodd (Clinton HS) chipped in 10.

 

In the victory over Arkansas, the Stars were led by Holly Rogers with 17 followed by Cait McMahan with 15. Brandi Brown (York Institute) chipped in 12 all in the second half.

 

The Stars two wins today assures them a spot in the championship bracket beginning on Monday. Their final pool game on Sunday against the Middle Atlantic Boro Blitz will determine whether they advance in first place or in second place.

The Tennessee Stars 14u team pulled out their third win in pool play today with an exciting 56-54 victory over the Middle Atlantic Boro Blitz. The Stars led 34-22 at the half, but the Blitz began to climb back in the game at the eight minute mark and tied the game with less than a minute to go. The Stars worked the ball for a shot, but then called time out with 9 seconds on the clock. With 2 seconds showing on the board, Cait McMahan (Heritage) hit a driving layup to give the Stars the lead. Then, the Stars stole the inbounds pass to hang on for the win.

 

The Stars were led by Holly Rogers (Cleveland) with 14 points and McMahan with 13. Kali Holtfreter (Hendersonville) and Brandi Brown (York Institute) chipped in 6 apiece.

 

The Stars now advance into the championship bracket. Their first game will be on Monday at 3:50 PM against the Minnesota Metro Stars. The finals will be played next Saturday.

The Tennessee Stars 14u team won their first championship bracket game this afternoon in Rochester, Minnesota. They defeated the Minnesota Metro Stars by a final score of 68-54. The Stars led at halftime 38-32.

 

Holly Rogers (Cleveland) led the way with 20 points including 4 treys. Cait McMahan (Heritage) had 11. Kitty Houston (Knox Webb) chipped in 8 and Crista Burtnett (Cleveland) had 6.

 

The Stars will be in action again Tuesday as they take on the defending national champs from last year, the Fairfax Stars. The game is at 8:30 AM.

It was an early morning in Rochester, Minnesota when the Tennessee Stars 14u team began the work of taking on the defending national champs, the Fairfax Stars in the winner's bracket of the national tourney. However, before lunchtime, the Tennessee Stars had sent their Fairfax counterparts to the loser's bracket and had advanced into the Sweet Sixteen!

 

The TN Stars defeated Fairfax by a final score of 50-44 in a hard-fought, back-and-forth, matchup. The halftime score was 26-23 with Tennessee in the lead. The TN Stars were down by 2 points with 3 minutes to go when Whitney Sells (Livingston Academy) hit a short jumper to tie the game. Tennessee never lost the lead again.

 

The TN Stars were led by Cait McMahan (Heritage HS) and Holly Rogers (Cleveland HS) with 18 points each. Rogers included four long-range treys in her total. Crista Burtnett (Cleveland HS) was a warrior on the boards with 10 caroms. She also kicked in 3 points. Kitty Houston (Webb School) had 7 boards and 3 points. Brandi Brown (York Institute) had 4 points, 6 boards and 3 blocks.

 

The Stars will play in the quarterfinals of the winner's bracket tomorrow at 3:50 PM as they take on the Chicago Flames.

The Tennessee Stars 14u team suffered their first loss in the national tournament today in Rochester, Minnesota. They were defeated in the quarterfinals of the winner's bracket in overtime by the Chicago Flames. The final score was 74 to 70. The Flames led at halftime 30-27. The Stars were clinging to a 2 point lead with 4 seconds to go when Danielle Campbell of the Flames was fouled on a shot attempt. She sank both free throws with 1.7 seconds on the clock to put the game into overtime. The score was knotted at 60 apiece at that time.

 

Cait McMahan (Heritage HS) led the Stars with 17 points. She was followed by Holly Rogers (Cleveland HS) with 12, Brandi Brown (York Institute) with 10, Tiffany Rodd (Clinton HS) with 9 (on three treys), Crista Burtnett (Cleveland HS) with 8, and Suzanne Morris (Walker Valley HS) with 6.

 

The Stars now drop to the loser's bracket and will take on the Phildelphia Belles tomorrow morning at 10:20. A win in that game would take the Stars into another game tomorrow evening as well as assure them a berth in the Elite Eight of the tourney.
