IMHO..Play ball. If someone stops you, share the copy of the rules you printed out on the first day of practice, if it isn't located in the rule book, would seem logical it is not a rule (this year).

IOW, Plead Ignorance - Beg Forgiveness.

Bad Advice.......2 or 3 years ago CCS had to forfiet all their MS games that an Ineligible player played in. The funny thing is her own teammates turned her in.

Go Figure, But do admire her teammates for doing the right thing.

Well, as long as we are talking history, in Knoxville just about all of the 'club' girls in the 8th grade that I know also played MS soccer in 2005. In fact, CAK won the MS tournament vs. Bearden MS in the finals.

However, the only member that I recall of the TMSAA at that time was CAK.

The rule regarding middle school soccer and club has always been that players could do BOTH. My players on GU13 to GU14 have done both for the last two years. Now in Chattanooga they basicaly shutdown club soccer in those age groups, GU13-GU14, during the fall because nearly, if not all, MS in that area are part of TMSAA or whatever governing body they have. We don't see any of those teams until middle October. In Knoxville very few, if any, are members and the league is not governed by TMSSA. So ALL players can do both club and MS.

In HS all players listed on the Varsity Roster are NOT eligible to play club. They can practice with their club team and do nothing larger than 6v6 plus keepers. That makes it for all purposes 7v7. You can do small sided games within your team, but not against other teams. I got that straight from the main guys mouth when I pulled my teams together late September for a practice and team meeting. There are no guidlines as to how much you can practice either.

WOW! Big G, seems like eventually we will all agree at one point in time. I guess it is how long you are here?

Mustcoach....see Post 49. I guess we understand the same rule. THat is exactly how I interpret what I have been told. As a result, those on JV who feel they may get a shot at a varsity position tend not to get involved with club.

Seem like as a result of forming something "official" in MS, those teams have dug their own invisible grave?

Ha ha! Yeah, it seems like the longer you stay on here, the more you turn into each other! Kind of like marriage in a VERY weird sense!

In print, I understand what the TSSAA is trying to do. They are trying to take the "pressure" off of the athlete between having to be overloaded with club and school soccer. I just personally don't think it is the TSSAA's responsibility to do so.

Now, I will say that in highschool season, I can't imagine going through the push pull of the competition between a kid playing club and playing highschool, but I think that these are horses of a different color. Middle school soccer is VERY different than highschool.

Here in Knoxville, we work very hard to have a good relationship with our club teams and the middle school programs. We don't want to compete with each other, we want to build with each other. Sometimes it works out, and some times it doesn't. Overall it seems to be a very good relationship.

And Canes, I TOTALLY agree with you in your last sentence. I am a firm believer (as is MVM) that the reason that the high school teams that are doing so well ARE doing so well is because of good solid organized club soccer. If you take away club, you will devestate the talent. Even playing in a top middle school league can't come close to a Atlanta Cup, or Disney Cup or Dallas Cup... BUT on the flip side, I think that playing for your school is INCREDIBLE. I have more of my players that say they loved playing school ball over club, but for more emotional and relational reasons, not necessarily skill or competition (although, at the right school, you can't find all of that).

I agree. Club soccer is the back-bone of the success of soccer in general here in Knoxville and E.TN. While things tend to run in spurts, E. TN in general has had very good success in recent years both in HS and at the club levels. Now the big picture when compared to the Region, I think TN is still behind the 'curve'. Maybe it is due to the switch in seasons vs. other States. I do agree that trying to do both club and HS simultaneously is a big burden with school and its other activities...the players need to have the chance to participate in those activities as well, as I think it is very important to overall social skills and relationships. As Big G said, there would be even more pressure on the kids, and there is plenty of that now. I think the burn-out would be even greater. Plus, us parents need a BREAK from travel. /blink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blink.gif" />

There was an effort in the West to do this about 6 years ago, but there was too much pushback from the club coaches. The players would be given a couple of days off to rest and they would play middle school and the club coaches would explode. Never really got off the ground, probably a good thing over here.

I admit that I am a big club guy....But there is nothing better than watching school soccer. To watch the club kids playing with pride for their school is a wonderful thing. To have their peers cheering for them in the stands just seems to elavate their games and spirit for the game. Getting a chance to show their friends what they have been doing all those weekends going to soccer tourny's instead of sleepovers, I think brings a certain satisfaction to a child.

IMO, There is room for both and a need for both. I just wish that TSSAA could see that.

    • Deja vu all over again, 7 yrs apart. SMDH Does anybody talk to each other?
    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
