What do you think are the qualities that make a good high school basketball coach? Is it wins? Is it character? Is it influence on the athlete's life? Is it help in getting a scholarship? Just what do you think makes a GOOD coach?

I think it takes a lot to be considered a good coach. I think you have to be involved not only with their bball problems, but also personal and school problems/situations. It helps a lot when a coach just sits you down and talks to you about his problems that he went through when he was that players age. At least I know it helps me.

Winning is part of the equation, but can't be all of it. Some schools, for various reason, will have more difficult time winning than others, regardless of how well a team is coached. Other factors are important: class, organization, discipline, hard work, character, effort of players, strategy and adjustments. Sometimes the best coaches don't win for a variety of reasons (lack of talent, no support, etc.). Sometimes poor coaches win because of an abundance of talent. It's easier to judge college coaches in any sport because they are responsible for getting their own talent. In high school, sometimes coaches have to play the hand they've been dealt. At one schoo, for example, 17 wins might be a poor season where at another school 17 wins would be a great coaching job.

Just my thoughts on some of the good qualities that other people haven't mentioned.

-The coach needs to treat everyone the same, no favoritism to anyone.

-The coach needs to make sure he/she pushes you during games and during practices.

-He/she should let you know when you're doing something wrong, but at the same time, let you know when you're doing it right.

-Reward doing things right with the same intensity level as he/she got on to you for doing it wrong.

A good coach is someone who treats all player's

equal. Player's realize they have to work hard

for spots on a team. But, when you have worked your

hardest and a coach allows one certain player

to make mistake after mistake and will not sit him

or her on the bench because they may cause the supper

star to quite. Or even better you need the brownie

points with their parent. It is really the pits. Several

people have talked bad about the Bradley girls coach on

coach t. I would like to strongly disagree with them in

this post. He makes all his player's work hard. He treats

all his players the same. A child knows I may not be the

best but, someone will mess up and he will sit his supper-

star on the bench ... and at least they will have a shot to

show the coach what they are made of. This is very important to children and this dose teach morals... and it

dose teach hard work will pay off.. And it dose show the

player's what team work is all about... Treating Everyone

equal is what makes a good coach... If you try to find

one child a scholarship.. Then try to help even the worst

player on the team. You may not be able to find them a

scholarship... But don't abuse one child so you can help

your special friends child or the supper star players get

the only scholarship you can come up with....

In my opinion here are some characteristics of a good coach!!

-At all times he/she must appear as an authority figure and not an "I want to be your buddy" figure.

-He/she must be confident in his decision making.

-Team rules apply for ALL players, and are not bent for a better player.

-Attitude reflects leadership!!!!!

-He/She must teach character and integrity at all times(Whether winning or losing).

-And lastly, he/she must have an ultimate goal of wanting to help the players whether it be on or off the court.

The greatest difference between a group and the man who leads them does not lie in their strength of knowledge, but in their CHARACTER. CHARACTER is more important than intellect when it comes to leading people. Manhood not scholarship is the key to being successful in life.

I have this quote posted in my office. I read it everyday and I'm a true believer of its contents.

    • OK, well, that’s because two quarterbacks can’t start. That’s football 101. The main quarterback won the starting job, so he was on varsity, and the Seymour transfer did not win the starting job. He played some varsity. He was mainly junior varsity, and he balled out when healthy, so for the starting quarterback who’s been starting varsity since his freshman year, if you have any form of proof that he’s gotten worse, somehow, whether that means stats or whatnot, please feel free to share.
    • They’ve both gotten worse. I’ve seen enough games to know that.
    • The only two transfers that Bearden has gotten that went on to play college football were a defensive back from Karnes, who transferred here way before the new coaching staff got here, and a running back from Carter, who went on to play at Maryville College. Both players received those offers while at Bearden, and both players got a diploma from Bearden High School. Therefore, they are Bearden kids, and you can’t do anything about that.   The transfer from Seymour didn’t win the job, what do you expect two quarterbacks to start at the same time? He played great on JV when he could stay healthy, and when he came in on varsity, he did great. The quarterback position is definitely going to be in good hands when the current starting quarterback leaves, but until then, they’re just going to be battling it out like every good quarterback competition does. The current starting quarterback has his flaws, and that is in the pass game, but what he doesn’t have flaws is running and scrambling, and if you go back and watch any game, which I’m sure you didn’t watch any, we used him very often, and when we needed a deep ball, we brought in the transfer from Seymour. The starting quarterback last year will be a senior this year, and the Seymour transfer will be a junior, so the Seymour transfer is definitely going to get his spotlight. He may even win the job this year. Football isn’t about who the newspaper thinks is the best kid. The best kid in the position will win the starting job, and I trust the coaching staff more than a newspaper or article to pick my starting QB.
    • I mean, we’ve only gotten two transfers that went on to play college football, one who went to UT Martin came his second semester junior year before the new coaching staff was here, and the other one went on to play at Maryville College, in which I don’t believe he had any interest prior to transferring.
    • An FYI: To see how an opponent has done against another opponent since 2001- go to the game by clicking on one of the teams. Click the G beside the game. For example, Milan: The info will show you the previous matchups and other info.
