How would you like to be Cloudland and win the Region, but have to travel 3 1/2 hours to Rockwood because the Cloudland gym is too small.

Following from the Knoxville News-Sentinel:

Someone should take Paul Kamikawa to Las Vegas and bet what he bets. The Rockwood High School boys' basketball coach came upon a little luck last week.

Despite losing to Grace Christian in the Region 2-A final on Thursday, Kamikawa learned that Rockwood won't have to travel for tonight's sectionals like the other region runners-up.

The Tigers (23-6), instead, will play host to Region 1-A winner Cloudland (19-10) at 7 p.m.

When Cloudland twice submitted information to the TSSAA last season that its gym met the TSSAA-mandated 1,000-seat minimum requirement to host postseason games, that information twice came into question.

A TSSAA investigation found the gym to be "well under 1,000," according to association spokesman Matthew Gillespie.

"With that, there was disciplinary action imposed upon them," said Gillespie. "They appealed to the board of control, and the disciplinary action was scaled down to apply just to the basketball program to where, for a two-year period, they cannot host any postseason tournament games."

That began this season. Consequently, Rockwood won't have to bus 3 1/2 hours to Roan Mountain.

"We can just stay on our normal routine," said Kamikawa. "It's hard to get to the state tournament when you're on the road. This is our sixth trip (to sectionals), and we've been on the road for four. And we've been unsuccessful on the road. The one time (2004) we were at home, we won. You can look at that stat and figure it out."

It sounds like they have to travel because they lied about the size of their gym, if they had been honest they could of chose a gym closer to their campus.

Was an issue of permanent and temperary seating. They will serve their probation and play on. They will be able to play in a gym close to RM after next year. I'm pretty sure it wasn't an outright lie. They thought they could move bleachers onto the stage side of the gym, which gave them that capacity, but being temperary it was not legal. They now understand the rules and will abide by them.
