Wrestler of the Year - Jake Young, Ooltewah ... state champ (171)

Doc Hodges Scholarship Award - Cody Hood, Ooltewah .. $500 scholarship given to a high school senior ... officials send four, $500 checks to colleges each fall ... scholarship money comes from profits made at the officials golf tournament in May ... this year's tournament will be at Brown Acres ... date has not been set ... Danny Gilbert should have a date soon.

scholarship is not based on wrestling accomplishments, but leadership, character and giving back to the sport, etc.

Cody is the 11th recipient of the scholarship ... past recipients have attended or are attending Ga. Tech, Michigan State, Southern Miss., UTC (4), Centre College, Cumberland and Princeton.

Don Elsea Award (injured in the line of duty, sacrificing one's body, etc., etc.) - presented to Josh Craft for almost being knocked out in a match while signaling back points during the Region 3 traditional tourney and still trying to blow his whistle to stop the match.

South End of a North Bound Mule Award - given to an unnamed official ... Heath Eslinger (to much applause and laughter from the crowd) and Max Ofori accepted on behalf of an official who was not in attendance... presented by Jeff Rufolo (who else?).. who has stupendously held the award in high esteem the past 12 months.

Young Officials Needed: Don Elsea encouraged high school seniors who do not plan to wrestle in college to become officials ... Mike Craft said that the first officials meeting for 2009-2010 is the first Wednesday in Oct. at 7 p.m. in the Goss Building at East Ridge High School.

UTC Recognized: Chris Bono gave a short recap on winning the Southern Conference title (five straight) with six champions ... those six will compete at the NCAAs, March 19-21 in St. Louis ... Coach Bono was Coach of the Year, Cody Cleveland, co-Wrestler of the Year and Jason McCroskey, Freshman of the Year ... Bono encouraged the seniors who are still undecided about where to wrestle to give UTC a try for at least a year ...

    • RR, you might remember. Didn’t someone hide the kicking shoe that game? It seems I remember we had missed a kick the week before, and we needed all the points we could get. We thought we had a better chance going for two, so $?&@$ hid the shoe after the first miss that game. No one on our sideline looked for it very hard.
    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
