This letter to the editor praising Phoebe Wright mentioned some Chattanooga track names I'm not familiar with.

Chattanoogan Ed Hammonds won the NCAA 100-yard dash in 1974 representing Memphis State. He teamed with two other Chattanoogans, Maurice Knight and Lynn Fox, and one other sprinter, to win the 440y relay. (This is confirmed by the U of M track media guide.)

I've never heard these names before. Does anyone know where they attended high school in town?

I sent a note to Sam Woolwine, legendary Chattanooga sports writer, asking about these three and got this nice response:

Hammonds went to Howard and am pretty sure Wright did as well. Fox was from East Ridge. I wasn't that much into track then, though I did emcee the program when they were inducted into the Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame several years ago. Hammonds is the one I remember the most because he also set a TSSAA record in the 100, but don't think that still stands.

This is program is established and has a club team (Stars) feeding it with wrestlers.    Siegel High School is looking for an assistant coach. Again, this program is growing with talent every year. This past year we had 2 state placers.    If interested you can send an email to starstnwrestlingclub@gmail.com or freemand@rcschools.net

    • Did this happen? Does anyone know? Ripley has their HC job posted on the bulletin board over the weekend.
    • Coalfield definitely isn't the same team they've had the past few years. They are still the favorites to make it out of their region because of their pitching. They have 1 arm that sits low to mid 80s and 2 other arms that are mid to high 70s with good off speed stuff. If you can avoid their top 3 bats in their lineup then you have a shot to beat them. Their 4-9 hitters are average at best. Wartburg's ace was able to shut them down last week in the game Wartburg won 4-2.
