What about this District this year? The addition of Loretto will make it very interesting especially if Kinsley Williams plays. I heard she quit the team.

Here are my preseason picks! Can't wait to hear the response to this! :roflol:

1). Wayne County

2). Loretto (w/Williams)

3). Perry Co

4). Summertown

5). Collinwood

6). Frank Hughes

District 12A Preview

1. Wayne County

08 – 09 Record – 28-7, 14-0

12A Regular Season – 1st

12A District Tournament – Runner-Ups

Returning Starters – 3

Predicted Starters – Kelsey Risner 5-8 PG (So.), Jordan Risner 5-8 G (Sr.), Liz Daniel 5-3 G (Jr.), Samantha Bell 5-11 F (Jr.), Carly Daniel 6-2 C (Jr.)

Other Notable Players – Tori Reed 5-6 F (Sr.)

Season Outlook – The Lady Cats are coming off yet another successful season where they surprised many people by making yet another Sub-State appearance. The losses from that team are somewhat significant as they lose do-it-all forward Jessica Hammonds and their most consistent outside shooting threat in Mattea Butler. Losing Hammonds will hurt as she was the heart of that team, and their depth is limited more so than ever before. Wayne County will rely mainly on the one-two, inside-outside punch that will come from 6-2 post Carly Daniel and 5-8 point guard Kelsey Risner. Look for all of the Lady Cats’ offense to run through those two scorers. Wayne County’s sizeable advantage inside, superior coaching, and an athletic, smart point guard makes Coach David Byrd’s girls one of the preseason favorites in District 12A.

2. Perry County

08 – 09 Record – 19-11, 12-2

12A Regular Season – 2nd

12A District Tournament – 4th

Returning Starters – 5

Predicted Starters – Brook Warren 5-7 PG (Sr.), Alycia Simmons 5-6 SG (Jr.), Kandra Starkey 5-10 G/F (Jr.), Nina McCaig 5-8 F (Jr.), Jacey Tucker 5-8 C (Sr.)

Other Notable Players – Jayla Erskin 5-4 G (Sr.)

Season Outlook – The Lady Vikings looked like a team last year that was destined to push for a District 12A Championship and make a long post-season run. However, the team that looked so polished, poised, and together at the beginning of the season completely fell apart down the stretch as they lost 6 of their last 7 games. The girls from Linden appear to have all of the necessary pieces in place as they return everyone from a year ago, including three double-digit scorers in Alycia Simmons, Kandra Starkey, and Brook Warren. If Simmons, Starkey, and Warren can work together and look for each other on the floor, this three-headed monster could be nearly impossible to stop in District 12A and Region 6A play. It will take consistent, high quality play from those three, as well as a focused team effort on defense and rebounding for Perry County to have a legitimate shot at making a run at the District 12A Championship.

3. Collinwood

08 – 09 Record – 20-9, 10-4

12A Regular Season – 3rd

12A District Tournament – Champions

Returning Starters – 3

Predicted Starters – Allie Ward 5-4 PG (Sr.), Kelsey Hardin 5-6 G (So.), Kara Jones 5-8 G/F (Sr.), Nikki Robertson 5-7 F (So.), Summer Thompson 5-8 F (Sr.)

Other Notable Players – Hanna Littrell 6-3 C (Fr.)

Season Outlook – The Trojanettes spent the majority of last year trying to figure out who their go-to player was going to be following the departure of Andrews and L. Daniels. Once they figured out that senior post Trista Rich was their money player, Collinwood’s play increased dramatically, resulting in back-to-back upsets of Perry County and Wayne County in route to a District 12A Tournament Championship. However, Rich is gone and once again Collinwood may struggle to find that one player that “wants the ball.” Returning is a solid nucleus of players in Ward, Jones, and Thompson, all of whom are quality players who should keep Collinwood in contention for the district crown. Also, look for 6-3 freshman post Hanna Littrell to get better and stronger as the year goes on. If she can learn to play through contact (which she doesn’t like), then she should find herself as a starter by mid-season, if she doesn’t start from game one.

4. Loretto

08 – 09 Record – 17-14, 10-4

10AA Regular Season – T-2nd

10AA District Tournament – 3rd

Returning Starters – 2

Predicted Starters – Abby Laws, 5-9 G/F (Jr.), Becca Curtis 5-5 PG (Jr.), Elizabeth Hemmen 5-8 F (So.), Maegan Jacobs 5-10 C (Jr.), Katisha Busby 5-6 G (Sr.)

Other Notable Players - None

Season Outlook – The Lady Mustangs are the newest face in District 12A as they dropped down from District 10AA. While many would think that moving from 10AA to 12A would make things easier on a team, one only has to look at the record of the big four 12A teams against some of the top 10AA teams last year (10 – 7) to see that this is certainly not the case. In fact, Loretto went 1 – 3 last year against 12A teams (losing to Collinwood badly twice and splitting with Summertown). Needless to say, this move will not be an easy one and throw in the fact that Loretto’s top scorer and star player, Kinsley Williams, has decided not to play basketball her senior season, and you have yourself a recipe for a tough year. On the bright side, Loretto does bring back the very versatile Abby Laws who will have to accept the role as the go-to player with Williams gone. Aiding her will be point guard Becca Curtis, who is more than capable of running the show, but when you really only have one, possibly two options, to look for, it can be very tough on a point guard that you can bet opposing teams are going to key on right from the tip-off. In order for Loretto to hang on to this last spot, they have to find someone other than Laws and Curtis that is capable of contributing in a major way on both ends of the floor.

5. Summertown

08 – 09 Record – 16-15, 9-5

12A Regular Season – 4th

12A District Tournament – 3rd

Returning Starters – 1

Predicted Starters – Sommer Smith, 5-4 PG (So.), Karlie Harville 5-5 SG (So.), Amy Franks, 5-5 G (Sr.), Courtney Grooms, 5-6 F (So.), Sarah Graham 6-0 C (So.)

Other Notable Players – Morgan Long 5-7 G/F (Fr.)

Season Outlook – The Lady Eagles graduated four starters from a team that struggled badly at times last season. Paige Smith, Summertown’s biggest threat offensively and most intimidating defensive player, is gone, as is her low-post teammate Sara Dickey. Summertown’s post play will be nearly nonexistent this year as they will look to rely solely on a group of small guards to get the job done. Smith and Harville are both consistent outside threats, while Grooms is probably the most athletic player on their roster. Those three will have to play near perfect games every night for Summertown to stay in contention this year and earn a trip to the Region 6A Tournament. Depth is an issue for this team as well, and it may be their biggest concern if it is true that all of the seniors on this team have decided not to play basketball this year.

6. Frank Hughes

08 – 09 Record - 1-21, 1-13

12A Regular Season – 8th

12A District Tournament – Eliminated First Round

Returning Starters – 2

Predicted Starters – Megan Tinin 5-5 PG (Sr.), Macy Stricklin 5-8 G (Fr.), Hannah Haddock 5-2 G (So.), Alex Delvin 5-6 G/F (So.), Jessica Deltedesco 5-7 F (So.)

Other Notable Players – Any Freshman That Can Dribble

Season Outlook – The Lady Lions find themselves at the bottom of what is a very strong District 12A. Unfortunately, they stand no chance of beating any of the other teams in their district, and they could very well go without a win all year. However, there is a small glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel as it appears that the middle school now has coaches that care about how well these girls do. While it will not happen this year or the next, look for Frank Hughes to at least become a respectable team over the next three to four years due to the work being done by the coaches and players in a middle school program that is no longer being run over by all of the schools around them.

greer is not a fresh. she is just an 8th grader, and i would not be suprised if wayne county ends up starting one of there freshman either

Hmmm..I know there is a guard there that was fairly decent that was going to be a freshman. I thought it was Greer. Haddock is the only other name coming to mind?

The LadyCats' freshman class is talented, but I do not think they will start.

1. Waynesboro/Perry county

2. Perry county/Waynesboro

3. Collinwood

4. Summertown

5. Loretto

6. Frank hughes

1 and 2 are a toss-up. Both teams have very dominating players at their positions--carly daniel and kelsey risner at waynesboro and alicia simmons and brooke warren at perry county. CWood is always a contender with ward, thompson, and rich on the floor. I just hope CWood gets it together and makes another run in the postseason like they did last year. STown will be scrappy.
