Baylor Netters Stop McCallie, 7-0

A favored Baylor tennis team posted a win ? 7-0 ? Wednesday against McCallie for the first time since 2006.

In the non-region match, the Red Raiders were led by Carlos Cuevas who posted wins at No. 1 singles and No. 2.

The two teams will play at Baylor on May 5 in the region match.

?The match today was the reversal of last year as we were the underdog and weren?t expected to win,?? said Baylor tennis coach Ned Caswell whose team remains unbeaten at 5-0.

?McCallie is much improved since the fall, fought hard today and this was a wake up call for us.

?We have four matches matches on consecutive day next week (St. Andrews-Sewanee, Brentwood Academy, Knox. Webb and MBA) so we better know that we need to be at out best every time out,?? Caswell stated.

Cuevas rallied to defeat Zeeshan Ismail, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 after teaming with Alex Cooper to stop Scotty Webb-Logan Yerby, 8-2.

Following the opening prayer and national anthem, Baylor won two of three doubles matches to gain the team point and then swept the six singles.

Straight set singles winners were No. 1 doubles partners Anderson Scarpa (No. 2), and Michael Goldstein (No. 3), as well as Rali Aditja (No. 4).

?Overall, I was pleased with how we played,?? said McCallie coach Eric Voges whose squad is 5-2.

?We had chances to win in some matches and I thought our guys handled the pressure of a McCallie-Baylor match well.??

Voges noted that his top six players were not among the starters from the 2009 state championship team and none had ever played in a Baylor-McCallie match.

?To play this rivalry with Baylor is fun and exciting, yet nerve racking and our players should have learned something from today?s match and be better prepared for the match in May.??

Rally Caps: Baylor was down simultaneously in the opening sets in three singles (Nos. 1,2, and 6) before claiming wins in all three matches.

Cuevas lost his opening set, 6-3, Eric Roddy fell 6-4 at No. 6 and Scarpa trailed 5-3 before winning 7-5.

Carter Invitational: Two-time defending champion McCallie and Baylor will compete in the Carter Invitational this weekend in Nashville.

Win Streak: McCallie had won nine straight matches with Baylor before Wednesday?s meeting ... Baylor?s last win was a 4-1 region dual win in 2006 ? The McCallie win streak started with a 4-2 triumph in the 2006 state finals ... Baylor?s last shutout win came in 1993 (4-0).
