Man, I get on here every once in a while and read some of the stupid comments made by parents. I read their ignorant comments, laugh about it, and go on. However, I felt compelled to make my first post on coacht in about four years. Let me fill you guys in on a little secret: high school coaches want to WIN! This ol mess about "politics, connections, who's kin to who" is sickening to read. I have coached baseball for several years in this state and have been accused of the same mess, and I can promise you it never had any merit. I have been accused of playing certain kids because they go to church with me when I have actually CUT more kids that I go to church with than have made the team - let alone started. Think it is easy walking into church on sunday morning knowing that "Billy Bob's" mom and dad aren't even going to look at you because you "cheated" their kid. It's not easy, but doing the right thing is better than keeping a kid on the team because you go to church with them. I have also been accused of only starting players who parents worked with me at the high school while I have actually (once again) cut fellow co-workers kids. Think that is easy? It's not....it stinks because you are face to face with that person quite a bit. Once again, you cut the kid because it is the right thing to do.

Here is something for some of you critical parents or fans to think about. If you are one of these that is complaining that your kid SHOULD be playing, he is not very good to start with! If he was a legit ball player, he would be on the field. Now, there are some elite programs in this state where they have an extremely deep talent pool, but the majority of schools don't have more than nine guys who can legitimately play - I promise. Most have 2-4 guys who can play, 3-4 who are very average, and most are even playing a couple below average kids because they have to. I understand that everything is relative and your actual knowledge of the game and/or your ability to evaluate a kid is not very good. Having played four years of quality college baseball gives someone like me and many of my fellow coaches quite a bit of an advantage as to who can "PLAY". My advice is to trust the coach's decision because 999 out of 1000, he has a much better idea of what's best for his team than you do.

Last point....if I am a parent of a kid that wants to be on the field, I tell him that the only way to consistently be on the field is to be a "no doubter". Leave no doubt in everyone's mind (coaches, teammates, opposing coaches, college coaches, parents, etc.) as to the fact that he should always be on the field every day! I realize that not every kid can be that guy, so if he is not, then you as a parent should be supportive and tell him to keep working hard. Face it -- not everyone can be the best!

When a nerve is hit one gets a strong reaction...

Sounds like you pretty much agree with me... 3 to 5 on merit and the rest based on other factors. Those are the ones who play based on ties. It is human nature. You may be the exception as a coach. Also, I am not talking about who gets cut. I am talking about the player who is statistically better but not a no doubter.

As I said the bashers are a little harsh. And there is no specific slam of Coach Reese from me... Just a general assessment of what I have been around for years... If you are not a "no doubter" and not so bad you get cut... Some connection can go a long way.

I talk to tons of coaches all the time, and there is a one thing we all try to do. We all try to put the best guys on the field! Relationships and connections don't matter to 99% of guys in this profession. One kid may be hitting .275 but is one of your best defensive guys so he plays every day. Another guy may be hitting .250, but is one of the hardest workers and has EARNED the opportunity over others with equal ability. The things you guys don't see, is what goes on in the off-season. Who is busting their tail in the weightroom? Who is the most coachable? Who does EVERYTHING that you ask them to do? Those kids often fill those remaining spots in a line up.

My point in my previous post as to cutting kids was simply to say that "connections" really don't matter. I may have a connection with a kid and his parents and that kid start for four years, or I may have a connection and the kid get cut. Doing the right thing and trying to put your team in position to win is what matters!

Think about this: why would a coach bust his tail on off-season training, field work, pre-season...hours and hours of preparation and then turn around and not play his best guys? Doesn't make sense.

I will tell you what everyone should be done on this topic. Bumper is a heck of a guy that has busted his butt for along time with RB. Sure does he speak his mind? Yes and he should. If he did not he would not be a good coach. Some of you need to get over the fact that he is leaving to start a new journey elswhere. Coach Garland did the same from Soddy Daisy and guess what all people did were bash him behind his back as well. Which is totally wrong. People you need to grow up and be the bigger person in this matter and leave this topic behind. What happened 5 minutes or 5 years ago is in the past. Get over it and drop it. Bump good luck with Signal MTN. I know you will do well. And just to end this post half of the people posting on here never played past high school or did not play at all quit leaving your dreams through your kids. GET OVER ITTTTTTTTT.......................................................................................

I totally agree with Duiman14 and rtm, people need to get over it. Bumper has done an awesome job as baseball coach in his 10 years of coaching. 30+ kids have signed to continue playing in college. You can't play for your kids, so let them play on their own!

The history and legacy of Red Bank baseball has been slowly deteriorating for years now. The fact that Coach Reese is leaving does not negate that fact if the coaching staff that is left continue to have anything to do with the players that will be left behind. I have not been on Coach T in 8 years, and I could care less about what people have to say about Red Bank, in its glory days the middle and high school were a pleasure and an honor to play for, but now I wouldn't step foot out on that field.

I have listened and watched as the assistant coach has publicly degraded the players and made them feel inferior to himself; using himself for comparrison and telling them to hold themselves to a standard that he could never achieve. Players need to be taught by former players; who understand the game, love the game, and love to pass on their knowledge in a way the promotes passion and conviction that inspires the team to be an inspiration later on when their careers are over.

As far as Bumber's resignation goes; you will be missed, I honestly think you have a good heart, but my friend, I played for you and i strover to make you proud and the moment I left that school I knew that would never be the case. I cannot blame you for who you are, but you had players who bled "blue and white" and always will. Take care of your family, which in all honesty is all that matters, and never forget the memories.

For any parents who have a problem with what I've said; too bad. To the rest of the coaching staff; you honestly need a reality check on how to "coach" and inspire your players. I know it must be hard to play for an excellent University and hardly ever get to actually PLAY, but these kids have a chance and I think it's best they get a fair shake.

Now that Bumper's officially been named baseball coach at Signal, it is, like the Chatta. paper said, a "win win."

Bumper is going, and taking his sons to an all-white school, and will coach against smaller, less powerful schools than he had to at RB. So he gets everything he wants. And the kids at Signal will get an easy economics "teacher" who will talk sports in class. They will love that. Signal has some tough teachers, so those students will need an easy class once a day.

And Red Bank will have a chance to hire a coach who will clean up its baseball program, and maybe finally go to the state. Congrats to all !
