We also have included a chart that is based on a formula which blends a team's total wins and schedule strength into the same number. This allows teams with fewer overall wins to break into the next higher "tier" of teams if their schedule strength warrants it. The included formula -- total wins+((opponents wins/10)*0.75) -- dilutes the schedule strength by an adjustable factor. Download the Excel spreadsheet and try it yourself.

The Wins + Strength Formula looks very fair. The West State teams are virtually the same except it corrects the blatant unfairness of Westview, who went unbeaten in Dist 13AA which has 6 playoff teams, having to travel to Memphis Oakhaven who finished 3rd in their district but get to host because Westview played a much tougher non-district schedule and had one fewer wins. Oh wow that was a long sentence!

So I guess you're saying the correction is appropriate?

 

What about the chart that places emphasis on district finish?

I have mixed feelings about emphasis on district finish. All districts are not created equal.

This shakes out much as I thought it should have this year, but it did not . In our case( South Pittsburg) this year, we finished 1st in District , did not receive a bye, did get to play week 1 at home but we have been on road the last 3 weeks. We played up against a couple of undefeated teams that beat us, those 2 losses cost us big time, in the playoffs. This spreadsheet appears fair.

The TSSAA could have adjusted the quads by balancing purposes. Its within their current guidelines to do so, they just didn't. The had 1 District Champ and a #2 team in quad 2 while quad 1 had 3 District Champs and at least on 2nd place team in it. They should have sent one of the District champs from Quad 1 to Quad 2 and sent the #2 team from quad 2 to quad 1. For example they should have sent SP to quad 2 and Gordonsville to quad 1. Then the Eastern half would have been balanced. the current system rewards schools that play above their classification against strong teams by hanging a poor seeding on them in the event they lose a 1 or 2 games to 2a and 4a state title contenders. This is particularly a problem in 1a because they can't play down to get teams to play them when others in 1a won't play them.
