Blackman at Brentwood

OK, what happened? I ask as I was not there and really want to know. While I do respect Coach Crawford, I did not think he has the horses in the stable this year for beating a Blackman team that hung R'dale.

Blackman played well between the 20's offensively but couldn't stick it in the end zone. Blackman had great field position the whole 3rd quarter and did not score 1 point. Brentwood had 1 scoring drive in the 4th quarter and Blackman did not have the horses to answer. Its pretty simple, Blackman is an average team without the I-train. Dee Mathers looked pretty good and fast but he isn't big enough to get the tough yardage yet. Strickland played a good game and had a lot of passing yards but also had a big interception when he was hit by a Brentwood player when he was throwing. Jalen Smith stepped up again and played well. Defensively, we once again gave up a big play on Brentwoods 1st drive of the game and could not stop Brentwood in the 4th quarter when it needed to. Pretty much like every game, if you don't take advantage of your opportunities when you get them, you will end up in trouble at the end of the game and thats pretty much what happened. Lets face it, we aint going anywhere in the playoffs if we can't ride the train.

Blackman today looks nothing like the team that played indy and BA at the start of the season. At the same time, I'm almost sure that Brentwood isn't the same team I saw play Cookville at the start of the season. If the TOE TRUCK (Mathers) is running at full speed Friday night, I think Blackman will roll over Brentwood with pure athletics. If not, This could be anyones game and the team that 'brings it' will win. I'll not have a good feeling about this one until I see the warm-ups. Both programs are class acts and reflections of their coaching. I'm sure we'll see great sportsmanship and hopefully it will be injury free.

GO BLAZE! :bored:

Well, Like I said.... It's anyones game if the 'Toe Truck' isn't dressed out in warm-ups. And the team that wants it the most will win it. Brentwood played good enough to win and Blackman didn't. I'm not going to rip the team I cheer for but there is plenty of blame to go around. Lets hope Mathers is well soon.

Congrats to Brentwood on the win.

Go Blaze!

Ok, it makes sense now. At this point in the season having a LINE, both O and D, that has spent the winter and spring working HARD in the weight room comes into play. Having read Shad's comments in the paper even he admits the lines on both sides are not getting it done. This I blame on HIM and NOT the kids as it is HIS responsibility to see they work in the weight room. Either he has to supervise it personnally or make sure and take responsibility for the assistant he assigns there.

Somebody PLEASE tell me the EX Siegel Head Coach is NOT running the weight room?

Although it didn't determine the outcome of the game I have to comment on the officials (Metro Conference I think) and how poorly they called the game. I feel for the teams who have to watch that week after week. They were out of shape, out of position, had poor mechanics and clearly haven't read the rule book. Sad to watch the old, fat, confused Head Referee who should have hung up the cap years ago stumble around on the field.

I have a question... Does anyone know the rule about running a kick-off out of the endzone. We have watched the ball be run from 5 yards deep out of the endzone (in the Smyrna game) to being called a touchback when the kick returner barely steps on the goal line.

It use to be impossible to have a 102 yard kick-off return because the ball was dead (a touchback) if the momentum of the kick carried the ball into the end zone. From what we've saw, It has appeared that rule has been changed in the last few years, until last night. Does anyone really know how the rule is supposed to be enforce today? :popcorneater:

Although it didn't determine the outcome of the game, Brentwoods clock operator should be embarrased. He obviously tries to run extra time off the clock near the end of the game when Brentwood needs the clock to run. This happened 3 or 4 times in the last few minutes on incomplete passes, runners running out of bounds, after 1st downs, etc. I realize this is something you get a little of with home field but that blatant is a little excessive and should not be tolerated. It seemed Shad had to remind the refs to get the clock to stop on several different occasions down the stretch. Also, I would like to see a replay of the play near the end of the game where holding was called on a Blackman run down to about the 5 yard line of Brentwood. It would have been 1st and 5 from the 5, instead it was 2nd and 22 from around the 30. I'm not sure there was 1 holding penalty called all game and on that play, it was called. Not saying it wasn't holding because I don't know, but the flag came from way behind the play from the 1 ref who did not know how to stop the clock.

It was holding and it was pretty blatant on that one. And I couldn't believe the guy that was 5 feet from the hold didn't call it - maybe he has a different responsibility on that play or something. Just about every time the RB got outside of the Brentwood DB playing 3 yards from the sideline with outside leverage on the WR there was a hold. But they only call it when it's blatant and that goes for just about every blocker on both teams. We all know there's holding everywhere. There was another hold called earlier in the game and it was the exact same situation - running outside the DB and the WR had a hand full of jersey.

Probably a dumb question but isn't the clock stopped by the ref with the control in his hand on the field - or does that control something else? I honestly thought he controlled it.

On all games? During the Oakland/Smyrna game the clock was controlled on the field. I know this to be true because after the game the ref was rolling it up and i nearly tripped over it. I wonder if it is controlled on the field during regular season for district games? I know it is controlled on the field during the playoffs.
