GPS Claims State Doubles Crown

MURFREESBORO - - Wearing all black under a blue sky, the GPS Bruisers team of Emma McCallie and Michelle Fleenor left their opponents feeling black and blue as they claimed a state doubles crown here Friday at Old Fort Park after winning three, straight set matches at BlueCross Spring Fling XX

In the finals, the GPS duo edged Francie George-Gracie Donoghue,6-4 6-0, for the first Bruisers doubles state championship since Aden Rogers and Andrea Saul were victorious in 2000.

“A great finish to a great career,†said a smiling McCallie, a senior who plans to play club tennis at the U. of Virginia next year, who served out the match with a service winner.

“We had beaten them three previous times so we knew that they were not going to give us anything and we had to earn it.â€

And earn it they did as they served well, played aggressive and executed a game plan devised by coaches Sue Bartlett and Meg Bandy.

“Emma and Michelle worked real hard on doubles the past two years, had a good game plan and stuck to it,†said Bartlett.

“They came out aggressive as they had nothing to lose, but it was crucial that we stayed with out game plan,†Fleenor stated. “Once we took the first set we kept the momentum going in the second.â€

Enough momentum which took them to a state gold medal.
