I'm ignorant enough so could someone enlighten me on this. I was told that the powers that be passed a rule where nobody but the coaches can work with the kids. So if you help you now have to be registered as a coach. First is this true and wouldn't that hurt the people it's supposed to be about.

I believe it's a CYA (cover your arse) issue. Similar to AAU and USA Wrestling. For example if a parent accuses someone working with their kids of committing a sex act, the TSSAA has done their due diligence because all coaches have been fingerprinted and had background checks. I don't believe there is a limit to the number of volunteer coaches that a school can have provided they are all registered. Of course most tournaments only 2 coaches in a corner.

Insurance and lawsuits, pretty much sums up the reasoning for this.

I figured as much. But I don't think it would stop anyone who would hurt a kid and if they would do it in a venue like wrestling then they'd do anything. Now if it is because of simple accidents while wrestling ( a lot of them are recent graduates from the program they are helping ) I can see that. It should be about the current students. Just seems like everything we do today we can't accept the other things that go with it. Nature of the beast Toughest sport there is.

    • RR, you might remember. Didn’t someone hide the kicking shoe that game? It seems I remember we had missed a kick the week before, and we needed all the points we could get. We thought we had a better chance going for two, so $?&@$ hid the shoe after the first miss that game. No one on our sideline looked for it very hard.
    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
